wifi issue

Hi guys,

Since I'm an amateur on android issues I could really use your help on this one... I woke up one day & my wifi button cannot turn green all of a sudden.. I bought this SII, brand new 2.5 years ago and since then I have not ever performed any kind of update or downloaded any new apps.. I use it mostly for web browsing & to contact my office's email server..

My device's version is :
GT-I9100
Android version :2.3.3
Baseband I9100XXKDJ
Kernel : 2.6.35.7-I9100XWKE2-CL187606
serial : GINGERBREAD.XWKE2

From what I can understand wifi issues are related to kernel.. I have tried to reboot the WLAN driver (calling *#*#526#*#*) but though the message says "loading was succesful" the problem remains.. I also tried to switch it off/on just in case but still nothing..
I suppose I need a firmware update (maybe update kernel file but I have no experience) and I was wondering if there's any other simpler or most effective way..

Many thanks in advance,

Welcome to Android Forums!

Updating your device is really quite simple and painless.....

1. Enable "backup my data" in Settings/Backup & reset.
2. Download and install the current version of Samsung Kies here.
3. Connect your handset via USB and backup the device with Kies.
4. Whilst connected to Kies, check for updates and install if available.
5. Once update is complete and handset has rebooted, go to Settings/Backup & reset and choose Factory data reset.
6. When handset reboots complete setup as normal, ensuring you select "Automatic restore" in the "Backup my device" options.

You should find that your contacts, calendar, wifi settings etc are restored automatically. Any apps that aren't will be available for reinstallation from the Play Store under your Google account. Should any user data be lost it can be restored from the Kies backup .

Dear Slug,

I followed all your steps, my phone was updated "succesfully" but I'm afraid the problem remains.. The icon cannot turn green..
Any other suggestion..???

Thank you in advance,

Hmm, if the problem persists even aftr a firmware update and reset then it's looking like a hardware issue I'm afraid. :(

Try this: enable "Airplane mode", leave it like that for 5mins or so, then switch 'Airplane mode' off and see if the wifi recovers.

Dear Slug,

I'have tried that too but still nothing.. Possibly you're right and it's a hardware failure..
I really wanted to avoid going to Samsung but it seems inevitable..

Anyway, thank you a lot for your time..
