Help Wifi Issues on stock V-Help?

My boyfriend has an unrooted, completely stock V. About 2 hours ago, the wifi quit working.Worked fine one minute, stopped the next. Under Wireless & Networks>Wifi, it says he is connected to our neighbors wifi (yes,we have nice neighbors :D ) like usual. However, brower won't load a web page, market won't connect, sync fails, etc. We've tried rebooting the phone, turning background data and auto sync off and on, turning airplane mode off and on, disconnecting and reconnecting the wifi, and everything else I could think of (which wasn't much, I'm not used to dealing with a stock, unrooted phone anymore) and nothing works. My phone and the laptop are connecting just fine to the same network.

If it matters, the guest wifi account we are using doesn't require you to use a password when you are in the wifi menu, rather when you try to load a website, you are brought to a webpage where you log in. Only 2 devices seem to be allowed at one time, but usually it will just bump another one off if you try to log in when the 2 accounts are already in use. this may be a moot point, since when this first happened, my phone was stuck in a bootloop and thus not connected (oops).

So, I'm at a loss here. Any suggestions? Anyone else having this problem? I searched, but all the results were for 3G drops, or wifi stuck on "getting IP address" and the like.

Also of note, we almost always have mobile data turned off, as we do not have any 3G coverage in our area.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, as we are both completely frustrated at this point! TIA :)

Try selecting the activate app (it might take a few tries), if that doesn't work try doing a factory reset from the privacy menu, or the android recovery.

Thanks Andy. I kinda figured that was the only logical "next step". I wish I knew what caused the problem tho...its gonna niggle at me until I figure it out, lol.will try the factory reset when I get home,or ill tell him to do it,but I doubt he'll want to mess with it.

How would that effect wifi tho? I was under the impression that you could connect to wifi even if you didn't have a serviceable plan? ( he does have a plan,im just curious)
Good point. If he doesn't have a service plan yet, then putting the IP address of the phone on the router we be the next step. Try asking JerryScript how to do that as I have never had to do it myself.

No,he *does* have a plan,I was just under the impression that your plan didn't affect your wifi connection. But I just tried to call him at lunch and the calls dropped almost as soon as they connected,so something else is wrong here :( boo.gotta get this fixed-he is thisclose to getting a job & he needs a phone. Looks like ill be calling vm when I get home.

Plan or no plan, wi fi is unaffected. Could it be possible that your neighbor's router is acting up? I have this 5 or 6 year old Linksys that like to act up from time to time and forget what it's doing. Check that as well.

I had sort of ruled out the router being the issuse, since 1.it is brand new and 2.my phone and laptop were not having an issue. Anyways, now calls are messed up too,so there's that :(

Try the activate app. It can't hurt can it? There was something else that can/could be done, but I got to find the info (Brain dead today). Might take a couple of hours as I have a prior arrangement that will take an hour to hour 1/2 to complete. Think about the IP address as well.

wifi analyzer from the market if your able to connect briefly. If not, use a laptop or other wifi device and determine the strength of the networks around you. See if your phone can even accurately determine the wireless networks around it. If you keep having problems, I suggest replacing the phone. It's possible the phone is defective.

Never mind, Just go into settings and wifi and see the list around you. Try different networks. The only reason I suggested the app is it accurately shows the signal strength and level of the networks around you, possibly giving you a clue to whats happening.

OK, try to manually input the IP address of his phone into the router if that's possible at this time. Try talking to JerryScript and searching the threads that have WiFi problems. I will look too.

ok, preparing to factory reset. Finally got his apps backed up-what an ordeal! Had to get a backup app from the market with my phone (My Backup app wont work without an internet connection! useless!), then upload the apk to my dropbox, then download it to the computer, then send to his phone via usb and install. yikes. Cross your fingers you guys, I really hope this fixes it

EDIT: No such luck :(
I can get it to connect to the market via 1x data (no 3G in our area), but nothing will download, even tho the two little 1x up/down arrow are white, like they are transfering data. Wifi still looks connected, but won't actually connect to anything.
I'm about out of ideas, short of calling VM, but I'm not looking forward to that at all. If they say to get a replacement, Its going to be really hard to do, since the phone was bought in FL by my bf's mom. I don't even know where she got it to take it back to a local branch. This is so stupid. I don't even have the $ to pay the insurance deductible, if it comes to that.

And you tried other wifi networks to connect to other then this one? I don't know if a starbucks or something like a place like that would be around you. But if so, if its able to connect to other wifi networks fine, then its just that specific network problem, not the phone.

No, I haven't connected to another network.I don't have another network handy, unfortunatly. However, I have ruled that out as being the problem because
1. My phone and the laptop connect just fine. Im using it now, in fact
2. It isn't that its 'not connecting', technically, it IS connected.

see? I don't know why it wont load anything, thats what i'm trying to figure out.

Ok, so, I just remembered/noticed something. Under applications>manage applications>all, most of the stock/android items are showing a size of 0.00kb. is this normal? Android System was showing up this way last night, before the factory reset and i didnt think too much of it, but now i wonder

I think you need to try connecting to another WiFi first. Your problem might be that you need to turn the router and the phone off at the same time then turn both back on after 5min,or manually input the IP address of the phone. I can guess from the WiFi source that neither is a possibility at this time. So,you need to establish if the WiFi is even working at all. Go to McDonald's or Starbucks, etc. If it doesn't work there you got a problem that will require a new phone. If it does work, then you need to figure out how your going to do the router thing.

Thanks.Andy, will do when I get home 2 nite. I told my bf to go talk to our neighbor about it today, but he had an interview and a doctors appt today, so he might not be able to catch him before he goes to work

I have had that problem on a regular basis with my Optimus V. Mine is not activated, so WiFi is the only way for it to work. The answer, consistantly, has been to reboot the router. Has worked every time but once, when I had to do a full reset on the router.
I tried the WiFi fixer app, but it made no difference. The problem was not in the phone. Cisco/Linksys router, BTW. Shouldn't have to do that. Oh well.

Before I got my V, I had frequent WiFi issues with my Intercept. Rebooting the router, reactivating the phone, and all of the other tricks I was told to try on the Intercept forums never did work. Factory resetting the phone always worked, but that got tedious after awhile. Once I changed the channel on the router, I never had WiFi issues on the Intercept again.

I honestly don't think this is a router issue though. I think it's a stock rom issue. None of the other hardware in my house that can run on WiFi has this issue.

Weeeell now my laptop is doing the same thing. Guess ill be going next door and asking my neighbor to reboot his router. I hope its an easy task, I would hate to put him they to much trouble just for us 'moochers ' lol
