Wifi Only XOOM?

I'm really disappointed the wifi version of the Xoom isn't coming out on release. Well, at least we have proof that Honeycomb exists- I probably wouldn't want the Xoom without Flash support anyways.

Hopefully by the time April rolls around the Xoom wifi will be out and a few of its competitors (like the Asus Transformer) will be out as well.

Look at this article over at techno buffalo.

According to the article, at Verizon stores,

"the Wi-Fi in the device will work regardless of whether or not you purchase a data plan for the tablet."

Does this mean that I could waltz on over to a Verizon store, purchase one for $599, not pay for any data plan or service and use it as a WiFi only tablet tethered to my Atrix?

you can always use it as a wifi only device, but if you pay 599 you are signing a contract and will have to pay for that data anyway

Ah, I see. So, what is the point of the article?

Also, does that mean that one could purchase the $799 model as a WiFi-only xoom of sorts?

I guess I should just wait for the legit WiFi-only version. xD

it means you buy the full device, 3G and all, but don't use all the features. Think of it as if someone said that you could buy a car but you could opt to use it as a stereo entertainment room. You still pay the full price but choose to use less of it.

Go there and bomb the wall, and tweet their lights out
They need to release the dam wifi version, or announce it THIS WEEK, at no more then 499$
We all just saw the ipad 2 (march 11, 499$)

Not sure if moto just wants to throw away thier sales
but let them know about it, pressure is good

As the saying is right now, if they dont act, apples gonna make more money on smartcovers then moto is on xooms

Get Honeycomb to more people out there

I think you mean Honeycomb?

$499 for a Wifi version? It's $499 for an iPad with half of the storage so it isn't unreasonable that Motorola prices the Xoom higher.

To add to that atleast they have a choice
what if 499 fits someones budget, and 16gb is enough (+ a sd card)
they have 3 options come march 11

as of now, we have ONE option, that is to be with verizon and pay 800$

I agree, if you compare prices of WiFi only tablets for the same storage of 32GB, its the same prices, a 32 GB SD card can be had for less than $100 making that a better deal than the 64GB iPad. Plus with the way Apple controls prices you'll probably never see a sale on the iPad like you may with the XOOM. On top of that the recent tear down showed the XOOM being something like $40 more in parts. Chalk it up to quality parts. Ive had more problems with Crapple and Dell than I care to remember.

We? WE are free to buy from anywhere.

$800? I only paid $705 with a pack of screen protectors, the Folio Case, and the car charger(which I will be returning for the dock I'm thinking). Sure I had to sign a contract but who cares, I intend to use this thing outside my house. Also, the iPad2 will never have 4G, mine will have it as a free upgrade, so what if I have to go without it for a week, I won't die.

I cant sign a contract, im with Tmobile for years
i want a honeycomb tablet, not for 800$ ( i know i can get it from bestbuy.com off contract)

Moto, Sammy, Toshiba, etc. get your prices and release dates out NOW. I'm waiting...lot's of people are waiting. What are YOU waiting for??? An extra month or two to try to steal a few extra dollars out of early adopters burning pockets?!? Get them to buy 3G since there are no other options available. These are your long term customers. Give them what they want. Your strategy is transparant and it SUCKS.
I'm no Apple fan, but that is how you do a launch. Give a date, prices, and choices. Let your customers have what they want at launch. What...you're telling me you couldn't put out a wifi only but you can put out the same device with an additional radio component? Bull. Sorry for the rant but I'm tired of seeing this. The lack of info, the rumors, the incomplete releases, it is tiring. I too am waiting to see how all the honeycomb tablets flesh out before I decide which one I want.
I would venture to say if Moto had released all versions and price points at launch they would have sold twice as many tablets by now and would have less people trying to decide between a Xoom and a Ipad2 right now. And as we all know, off these Android and Apple forums (which are biased, I know I am, me want honeycomb) are a lot of wishy washy consumers who will decide on price and what looks "cool" in the store when they pick it up to play with it. Make it available, make it competitively priced, and offer all the choices up front. Looks like "Apple Greed" is becoming "tablet industry greed".
Moto, Verizon...OK, you have made your $8000 off Phandroids who decided not to wait for the cheaper wifi even though that is what they wanted...release the wifi version and see what you could have profited up till now. Oh btw apple's $499 ipad2 just stole some of those sales.
