Wifi Only XOOM?

Actually, Apple's iPad2 stole ALOT of the Xoom's thunder and sales. These other companies CANNOT compete with Apple. Apple holds an event and within 10 days they have their products on store shelves with pricing. Love them or hate them, Apple KNOWS what they are doing. There is a reason they are profitable and own the Tablet and PMP market. Moto is tight lipped about their WiFi only unit (release and pricing). HP, they have NO idea when they are going to launch their DOA TouchPad. This is ridiculous. One of these Honeycomb manufacturers HAS to get a Tablet out at $499. I don't care about the specs (as the majority of the tablet buying population does not as well). Apple products just work. They don't promise things (4G, USB, MicroSD, Flash) and then MAKE YOU WAIT FOR THOSE THINGS TO WORK.

I went last Thursday to buy a Xoom at BestBuy. I had Xoom in hand (with case) and was standing behind someone else who was paying for his. I saw the register and it said $1050 (Xoom, Case, Dock, Activation, Data and Taxes) and he put it on his BestBuy card. I said EFF That. I put it back, purchased a Nook Color and Case for $315, came home and had Honeycomb and Marketplace/Google Apps up and running in 2 hours (I did not have Android SDK or Java Platform or anything prior to this, started from scratch). I put this on a 8GB Class 6 Micro SDCard (overclocked to 1GHZ) that I had laying around. Now I can do darn near anything that Xoom owners can do at a fraction of the price. I also have 8GB Froyo SDCrad as well (they both have dual boot capabilities). I could not be happier.

Moto better get their Crap together and quickly or else the Xoom will be DOA come next Friday (Mar 11). If Moto decided to sell a WiFi only Xoom for $499 within the next couple of weeks, I would take back the Nook Color and purchase the Xoom. Tick Tock Moto, Tick Tock. I don't think they can afford to continually lose potential customers.

A nook color is no where NEAR a XOOM or even a Galaxy Tab.

That's not true. I can Surf the Webz, play some Angry Birds and get E-Mail. I have also turned it into a SNES and NES emulator and can play those games. It's also a better E-Reader than both those two devices with a gorgeous screen. What is it you can do that I can't right now. You can't use USB and neither can I. My SDCard actually Works. I tether it to my HTC EVO (for Free, No Activation or Data plan) on 4G. Do you have 4G speeds yet? What is it that you can do on the Xoom or Galaxy Tab that I can't do that's so great. For most people getting their E-Mails, Surfing the Webz (from couch or while out and about) and playing some games (Angry Birds etc. etc.) is all that matters. I can do all these things quite well. I don't need a Camera or GPS as my EVO has those and I carry that all the time. I can actually attach my EVO to my windshield for GPS directions (can't do that with the Xoom).

BTW - I don't think the GTAB is running Honeycomb (I could be wrong). I know one thing, I AM running Honeycomb on my Nook Color and petty well I might add.

I agreed with ghodzilla5150 until he purchased the nook as an alternative. I would rather go $349 ipad1 refurb + kindle instead. Or maybe a $299 gtab if I could use an available upgrade on my family plan.

I feel sorry for motorola. They have to depend on google for software and depend on adobe for flash. Just like ghodzilla5150 suggested, Apple has a big advantage by owning the hardware and software.

I purchased the Nook because I can tether it to my EVO (for free). Can't do that with an iPad. I believe the Nook Color is a better E-Reader than the Kindle. I like having a color screen. I also have a 32gb iPod Touch (3rd Gen), what do I need a iPad for? I have WiFi (wireless N at home and 4G on the road). I don't need a Data Plan when I have Free Unlimited Data from Sprint and can just tether

These companies are dogging it , on top of that the Telecoms somehow own them.
The telecoms must be paying them HUGE sums of money or threatening not to pub/sell there phones.
It makes ZERO sense for a company to put out a product and bypass retail outlets the way Motorola has. Its beyond stupid.

They just allowed there competitor to completely take the spotlight away and still havent shown a reasonable plan. Everyone knew 499 price point wasnt going to change. Why wait ?

Then again youre talking about a company that was basically on its deathbed before Android. VZ already has taken ad dollars away from there products yet they continue to rely on VZ.

Motorola has alot of cowards and fools working for them.

It is a Hack either on a Micro SDCard (recommended, as you can't do the Nook any harm) or internally (have a chance of bricking your NC). For $250 it runs GREAT. If you don't need GPS, Camera or Bluetooth (being worked out) then this a great alternative to paying $800 for a Xoom or $500 for an iPad. Plus it's an amazing E-reader with a very nice screen. You can setup your SDCard to Dual Boot. If you go this route just make sure to get a 8gb Class 6 or Class 10 Micro SDCard. Runs alot smoother

They only own the software, most of the hardware comes from Samsung. I hear that line spouted all the time by Mac owners who couldnt tell you the difference between CPU and GPU, HDD and SSD, even though now Apple is using Intel Chipsets on top of it.

All device manufacturers have to corral suppliers for "off the shelf" components. Motorola reliance on google's operating system is different. I doubt Samsung can be successful long term if they ship hardware that is buggy or that is missing obvious features. Google can ship pretty much any crap and release it own their own schedule. Nobody has leverage over them.

So what? The part I responded to still stands. Apple doesnt make everything in house. Thats what I was talking about as for the OS youre right, Motorola does have to rely on other companies to create one whether it be Windows or Android.

I felt the same just like you said. I don't like Apple as a company of their arrogance. Apple users always think they are better than you. But that's a different issue. I want a xoom but I just don't think it's justify of $800 + 9.75% sales tax in CA. Apple does make great products and does a good job in promoting their product and pricing tier.

At least Samsung is taking the ipad2 launch as a wake up call.

Xoom currently has an untenable position with pricing, Apple is using the Ipad
price reduction to undercut the Xoom. I expect some kind of price incentives from Motorola and the quick release of the wifi only, otherwise they fall farther behind the Apple Juggernaut.

They don't have to over do apple, they just have to hang with them - give us another option. Its just like an MMO, if you're familar with them, no one will compete with WoW subs, not soon anyway but it doesn't mean there aren'tn other quality MMo's out.

Please pardon my ignorance, but is it possible to buy an off contract Xoom and activate it under a Sprint plan?

A little poking around gives me some hope that the (radio) bands are compatible.

Dave

$499 for a Wifi version? It's $499 for an iPad with half of the storage so it isn't unreasonable that Motorola prices the Xoom higher.

Honeycomb is immature; lacks functionality and compatibility. Is not a (typically-overpriced) Apple product. Is a newcomer and needs to prove itself.

Why?

"Why isn't that car cheaper, its new to the product line - it needs to prove it self" - lol.

Motorola has never had it's strong suit with consumer electronics. It makes up a tiny percentage of it's revenue.

Moto's real revenue stream is RF and telecom hardware.

whats that? made in america? i have a nissan which is a japanese vehicle made in mississippi..best of both worlds. american workers building a foreign vehicle on US soil... :D
