Help WiFi Sharing & Battery Usage Issue

Is your phone sim free, or from a network provider?

Plug your phone in and run the Kies software... check for an update. If not, don't worry for now. If there is, it will be to KE7 (PDA) - do that if it's available.

I was with o2, and it was on an o2 product code, so didn't get updates until o2 okayed them... you can debrand your phone and get the latest updates, coverting the phone to a sim-free phone, but that requires more flashing and tricky stuff...

One hurdle at a time eh! If there is an update to KE7 available through Kies, do it, if not, leave it...

I will do a video hopefully tomorrow so we can root your phone :) - sorry, I had to work late tonight or I would have done it by now :([/QUOTE

No worries. I have an O2 branded contract phone. Im on KE2 but will do as you say and check for the KE7 update before following your guide.

I got 8.30 hours of batery life today :(...100 percwnt down to 10 percent.
The only things on were widget locker ,no Led and Google talk. The only widgets i use are a calendar, circular battery percentage, winamp and a clock.
I listened to music on loudspeaker for 1 hour.
I browsed facebook for a total time of say half an hour.
Chat for a combined time (had notfications on for google talk) of half an hour.
Is this reasonable?. Oh and i was on wifi for only about an 2 hours rest was 3 G

m starting to get really worried now.So i toook a nap for about 4 hours today.Phone was on 90 percent charge.Only thing on was the above posted widgets +google talk and notifications from fb.This was on 3g.When i woke up the battery was dead  Anyone?

Question for Baines93

I just got my SG2 working on Kies for the first time since (always had problems with Windows 7 installing the device fully until just now) and it is suggesting i upgrade my firmware to KE4 (i'm currently on KDH).

Should i do this or should i just root?

Or is it best practise to update to the latest firmware and then root?

Also, i swear i read that you are using KE7, if so, why am i only being offered KE4? :/

Edit: Just read above that some networks are slower than others in approving firmware updates, so i guess that means T-Mobile haven't approved KE7 yet (lazy gits).

Isn't there a way of de-branding my phone?

I didn't even think my phone was branded as it has no logos, no start up screens, no wallpapers and is sim unlocked so...

Any advice would be greatly appreciated! :)

You can download and flash KE7 via odin and then root. However if you install an aftermarket firmware, you may want to take note of the base firmware of the aftermarket firmware before you take further action and flash it, as it may not be based on KE7

I take it your not worried about losing your warranty then.

Well i went a head with the firmware update and despite failing to backup my phone to the PC, everything went smoothly.

I backed up to SD using MyBackUp pro before hand and it doesn't appear i lost any data anyway.

In regards to the firmware, despite being told it was KE4 by Kies, it must of been talking about the baseband version as checking the phone information confirms that the build number is XWKE7 but the baseband version is XXKE4.

I'll be interested to see what improvements have been made, one bug i would love to see fixed is the way the wi-fi randomly disconnecting every 20 minutes or so.

So far i've noticed a massive difference in the battery % consumption levels:

Display is down from 19% to 10% on the lowest brightness setting.

Android System is down from 24% to 8%

And the biggest improvement is Cell Standby, down to 3% from 39%.

And so far wi-fi sharing hasn't made an appearance and my wi-fi connection hasn't dropped in the last 2 hours, amazing upgrade.

I'm going to do a full battery test tomorrow and report back my results before i root :)

Anyone?
And what is this KE7 stuff? I dont get anything to update when i plug my phone in?

Considering you blasted music from the loud speaker for an hour, yeah i'd say that battery usage was pretty reasonable.

Hi Darkflame, as expected, you were looking at the wrong thing... I don't think there even was a KE4 firmware :P - yeah it is confusing though! confused me. KE7 worth updating to though, as I said :) - good job you didn't have to debrand to do so aswell! :)

ps. video for rooting will be coming tomorrow hopefully cooky! I've been flat out busy sorry! :(

@Darkflame Thanks for posting the link, I think if i use that and @Baines93 video guide, i may have a fighting chance of rooting successfully!

@Yash78 do you have a strong data signal where you are? A colleague suggested to me that if you have a poor signal your phone is constantly scanning the airwaves to try and find one/the strongest one and this takes up a lot of power. Apparently it does this on standby so if you have a poor/weak signal in your area that may be an explanation. you can turn off data connections (and still keep basic phone signal for calls/texts) to stop this, but it does limit the functionality of your phone somewhat making it a less than ideal solution. Might be worth considering though.

I've rooted (couldn't help myself) and all went smoothly with no issues, start up time is now twice as long but at least i uninstalled all the pre-installed bloatware that Samsung forced upon me, i even uninstalled the Wi-Fi sharing :D

I used an app called SGS tools, made the whole thing easy as pie, even got rid of the default Gallery app (all backed up of course), lol

The only thing that is annoying me now are apps that i use and don't want to uninstall that force them selves open on start up and refuse to close.

I've got 3 start-up app control programs installed which prevent a lot of the apps starting up but some of them still slip through like Google maps.

Crikey, program control wasn't half as difficult on Windows as it is for Android :(

I think i may have to give in and part with even more of my cash and buy Titanium Pro and freeze their asses.

The only problem i foresee with that is i'm assuming the freezing doesn't recover the ram back?

I think it does... that's the point in freezing them, save cpu, save ram, and thus save battery by preventing them from running...

There are apps that hide them from the system, but I believe TB is supposed to simply disable them.

What do you use to control startup?

Matt

Cheers DarkFlame!

Cooky, I just did a crappy video, uploading to Youtube now... taking ages, as it 700mb haha. Had to shoot in 1080p to get it to focus on the bloody screen!

I've been a total idiot and talked about KE7 throughout. Ignore me, and instead of getting the root file (.tar) for KE7 get the KE2 version... disregard anything I say about extracting KE7, the path of the KE7 file etc. - it'll all be the same, but get the file for KE2, not KE7 as I point to in the video. The file should say KE2 and not KE7 in odin obviously too.

lol, nice vid, you could of just used CamStudio - Free Screen Recording Software and saved yourself a lot of hassle though :p

Unless of course you wanted to show the phone screen of course (i didn't load the video past 30 seconds to save bandwidth so wouldn't know).

Good luck with the start up apps, they stopped about 95% of the apps that were starting on mine :)

Yeah, I decided not to do that originally, because I don't have a microphone... I could have recorded the voice on the SGS2, but that would have been as much hassle, so yeah, made use of my new SGS2's awesome camera haha :)

2 things that helped my battery was installing juice defender and turning off auto syncing for my exchange email (I know not ideal) Also I think disabling 'use wireless networks' in location and security helped.

Oh i see, lmao

My apologies, i just ignorantly assume that everyone has a microphone in this day in age :p

Best off opening it in youtube (click on the thing above) so you can see my annotations properly pointing to the right bits of the screen! :)

@Baines93 Mate thanks so much for doing that, really appreciate it. Just watched the video and reckon i should be able to do it now. Im off to Germany this afternoon so will wait till i get back at the weekend (in case i mess it up just before i leave) and do it Sat.

Will let you know how it goes.

Thanks again

Just thought i'd give an update on how i'm getting on.

After gaining full access to my phone via rooting, i have managed to stream line the background apps so much now i am proud to say my phone now idles at around 5% CPU usage with 560mb of free ram.

And that's with about 10 vital apps running in the background whilst streaming internet radio over wi-fi :)

Without messing about with replacing the TW Launcher (which i can't be bothered to do) i doubt i can get any better to be honest.

After uninstalling and disabling about 95% of the stock apps that come with the phone, i think i can finally get the best performance out of my purchase, lol

And best of all i didn't have to part with any more cash or freeze anything, i simply uninstalled everything i didn't want with no ill effects and stopped apps starting up when my phone is powered on.

Although the firmware update appeared to bring the CPU usage of wi-fi sharing down to a much more respectable level of 1-2%, i simply didn't need it running anyway.

So goodbye forever pesky wi-fi sharing, i will not be missing you one bit :D

@Baines93 Great video.

One thing that wasn't mentioned was how to get the phone back to original state. I've also got an O2 branded phone so if something goes wrong and it has to go back I'd like to revert.

I only ask this as I've had 2 HTC's go back to O2 in the last 6 weeks which is why I'm now on a SGII!!
