Root Wifi + texting questions

I don't really understand texting via wifi connection. Where I go to school, I have very poor signal quality, but I can get onto wifi. Is there a way to text like normal from my evo, but have it be sent over whichever connection is "best" at the time (wifi or cell)?

Thanks in advance.

Wi-fi shouldn't enter into it.....if you have a signal from Sprint you should be able to text the same way you place a phone call. The wi-fi will only come into play when you're using the phone for internet based functions.

I want to be able to text over wifi when sprint signal is unavailable though. I can't get reception some places, but I can get wifi and I would like to use that signal to send texts when needed. Any advice?

But I can't send it from like my sprint number? There is no app for that? I am thinking something like a wifi-only phone, but only when I need it.

Nothing that I know of and I would have to think it's something that hasn't drawn enough interest. I know it's not exactly what you want, but you could create an email address with your phone number such as 7705551212@yahoo.com.

Huh. I understand that I can just email, but I would rather have the text be typed and sent from the native messaging system for the evo, but have the message itself be sent over a wifi network.

If you set up Google Voice to import your number (Sprint and Google Voice have an agreement of some sort) you can send your texts via a data connection. But you would have to have your text go to the Google Voice app instead of the native messaging app. I used to do that when I first moved to the location I'm in now but the signal got better so I didn't need it anymore.
