wildfire froyo update.

They pushed another software update onto sim-free Wildfires in the UK overnight... but still not Froyo. :/

Although HTC made no contractual promise there would be a Froyo update for the Wildfire, their global PR and community manager certainly suggested it was imminent months ago. See here:

HTC: Android 2.2 Froyo by Christmas, no Android 3.0 Gingerbread until 2011 | Electricpig

That was certainly a major factor in the purchase of my sim-free HTC Wildfire back in August, and if they intend to go back on it, they can be damn sure I'll never buy a HTC handset again.

could this mean 2.2 on its way?

could this mean 2.2 on its way?

Look at the date of the article. It was one of the reasons I bought my Wildfire, which is now coming up to four months old. As time goes on however, it seems like HTC are increasingly reluctant to provide Froyo for this handset at all (see twdawson's post above mine for more evidence of that).

I wonder if they are waiting for Gingerbread for the Desire to be out before they release Froyo on the Wildfire so they don't cannibalize sales of the Desire to the Wildfire if they have the same OS. Keeping the Wildfire a generation behind the Desire might boost Desire sales for those that want the latest OS.

I hope your theory is right. :)

I will never buy like this again, because of this update problem.

I know what you mean. They lead potential buyers up the garden path by talking to the media about impending cool features, then pull the rug from under us AFTER we've bought the product. It's irresponsible at best and does nothing for HTC brand loyalty.

I can confirm update 2.2 WILL be released for the wildfire.
HTC are doing their best to try and get it out before the end of 2010

I have never known a company like them for miscommunication. I have emails from HTC support (Ireland -- which I believe does all UK support) stating that Froyo for the Wildfire is everything from unlikely to coming but not in the near future (that communication was actually yesterday), and now it turns out they're saying before Christmas on their Facebook page?

Amazing.

some people just dont know what their talking about its coming and always have been. would you rather them say its coming and then not or rather them say maybe, maybe not then have it ??
i would and i like the fact its finally coming.

Just recieved this email - (11/12/2010) 11th December 2010 at 14:03pm (GMT)

''In regards to your android 2.2 enquiry, I can help you with that.
At the moment the Android 2.2 is not available for the HTC Wildfire and we haven't information of when and if it will be release, however I can advice to keep an eye on our website for future information about it.''

So there are trying to say we might not even get it, so i guess its a waiting game keep an eye on the website... -.- Hope we get it and if so before Christmas.. Gutted my dad has Desire and he has it already just waiting to see for the Wildfire now to get it..

Hope this helped guys.. =)
(Please Thank me for this post - just for updating it for everyone)

this same email has been sent to 1000s of people its like a template they are just lazy and dont wanna answer us lol.

HTC has just announced that the Android 2.2 Froyo update for the Legend is starting to roll out to customers around Europe. The Over-the-air update package is being pushed to owners of unlocked devices as we speak.
As usual in such cases availability for carrier-locked versions varies. The good news is (or at least for the UK subscribers) that this time it won't take too long. As a matter of fact Vodafone and Orange have already pushed the update to their subscribers.
HTC also reconfirmed that the low-end Wildfire will also be getting a Froyo update soon, but they didn't mention a specific date. Previously they've promised that the low-end device will be updated before the end of the year so let's hope they keep that promise.
Unfortunately, there's no mention if either of those devices (or any of the other HTC Android smartphones for that matter) will be getting to taste a Gingerbread update.

I would rather them keep their mouths shut if there's no chance of it being released within six months so I don't go out and buy the damn handset under the impression it's imminent.

First it was Q3.
Then it was Q4.

Srsly. I wouldn't be surprised if that now becomes Q1 2011, but am hoping it's before Christmas, as some other questionable source indicated. Yeah, HTC UK = questionable source, given their facebook updates are giving wildly different information to their email responses, and I'm not talking about generic responses.

All this has really turned me off HTC. I wouldn't recommend them and I probably won't buy HTC in future. If they hadn't said there would be Froyo for the Wildfire I would either have looked elsewhere or at least would have taken into consideration. By lying and giving conflicting messages they have destroyed any faith I may have had in them.

Since when does a O.S come out on time anyway. And yeah HTC do suck when trying to actually talk to people but hey that life and you get that with most phone companies these days.

Care to cite some examples of manufacturers promising major OS updates (not mere bug fix patches to the existing OS) and not delivering within six months?

That's not been my experience with other cellphone manufacturers. The first we knew about OS updates with Symbian for example was when Nokia suddenly dropped an update on one part of the world, like Russia or the Far East. Even after doing that they wouldn't have PR managers giving bloggers the impression of an imminent update. The update would just be quietly rolled out in countries around the globe over the following 1-2 months. For good reason too because handsets date quickly and a considerable proportion of smartphone owners begin to consider replacements after six months. Obviously if they bought their latest handset expecting an imminent, major OS update and it still hasn't arrived after six months, that's going to dent their impression of the brand concerned. And guess what? Brand image is extremely important to large companies and corporations, particularly cellphone manufacturers, but obvs it's not high on HTC's priority list.

I will almost bet, that Froyo is NOT gonna be released for our Wildfire's.
They have released a new phone HTC Gratia, which are preloaded with Froyo. And that is most likely the "replacement phone" for our Wildfire.
Better screen resolution and better CPU. I was not promised anything about Froyo and Wildfire, when I bought mine.

the gratia is a hell of a lot more expensive then the wildfire, this makes it hard to compare the two. its more similar to a hd mini then a wildfire.

I use a simfree Wildfire on the o2 network in the UK and at the moment there is still no update available I have contacted o2 but I have not had a reply from them as of yet but when I do I will post there reply here.

My advise is to check with your network provider before trying the factory reset, see copy of HTC's email below dated the 07/11/2010.

Thank you for contacting HTC Customer Support.

The 2.2 is available for the HTC Wildfire.

This will be received via FOTA (firmware-over-the-air). This means that the individual network providers will send the update to the devices from their servers.

There is no possibility to pinpoint the exact time when a certain device will receive the prompt to update.

You can try a factory reset to try and trigger this but please be aware that this is not a guaranteed way of triggering an update and will restore your phone to the original factory settings (data will be wiped).

Sincerely,

Karolin

HTC

Seems HTC have no idea of what they are doing just received this email at 3:05pm 07/11/2010 see email below.

I do apologise for the misinformation.

What was flagged to me as a FOTA update for the Wildfire is actually just an add-on to improve certain functions.

I have investigated when/if the wildfire will receive the 2.2 update for you and at this moment and time we do not have any official dates or comments to pass on.

If you would like to see the FOTA for improvements please view the 8th listing of this link:

Again my apologies for the misunderstanding.

Well got a reply from o2 uk today they say as the Wildfire is not in there portfolio they would not be getting or releasing any updates from HTC for the Wildfire via the o2 website in the UK any updates must come direct from HTC and not via o2.
Btw. this "weird" update for the Wildfire made some things a lot smoother :). It also introduced the "Update All" button and the "Auto Update" option to the Market (which is usually only available with Android 2.2 on other devices), plus a new Layout for the Market.

The update all and auto update is part of the market update not the system update. The system update has tweaks but is mainly used for the future update to Froyo which is out in the next 2 weeks.
