I think you missed my point. I wasn't arguing that windows in more popular in the desktop market. I was saying that they are different operating systems. Apple iOS can't run native android apps. Android can't run native iOS apps. That was the point I was making. They are different operating systems.

To be fair, you said both (it is not linux and it is not a real linux distro). But it is real Linux. To test this, I fired up my trusty terminal emulator on my vintage Evo and ran this command:

Linux is just the kernel. Nothing more. Whatever runs afterwards (X, KDE, Touchwiz) is just on top of Linux. In a way he's correct. Android isn't Linux. It's a graphical user interface on top of Linux

Indeed, Linux is the kernel, the OS is GNU. The GNU Operating System
On that note, a lot of distros do not follow the guidelines of the GNU Project.
I have been going to the above site on and off for a few years to see the progress of the Hurd kernel. hurd Looks like Debian has a test image. When and if there will be a final release will be interesting to see how many adopters will use it over the Linux kernel.

Linux (PCLinuxOS with Enlightenment or LXDE Desktop Environments) is my primary OS at home, I also have Win7 & 8 with Office 2007/2010 on separate desktops because some office files created in Office 2007 & newer won't play nicely with LibreOffice. BTW MS didn't get any money fom me for Windows, I got my Windows (7 & 8 )courtesy of Dreamspark theough my Uni. Dreamsparrk is kind of MS acting like a Drug Pusher (The first one's free - try it, you'll like it). WHen I can't get MS stuff for free any more, I'll move entirely over to FLOSS.

Can we please keep this thread on the original subject. About NASA using Debian GNU/Linux on the ISS rather than Windows, which is a fact and not an opinion. 
Presumably NASA has their reasons, whatever they might be, for choosing a Linux OS over Windows in this particular rather specialised situation. Which I guess is not playing Warcraft.
And no personal attacks please.

Because Windows comes installed on the majority of desktop computers, giving it a huge advantage, and having whatever it is, let's say 75 percent of the PC market does not make it the best.
I really do not see anyone posting in this thread saying Linux is the best OS of all. They seem to say it is the best for their purpose, including me. I also stated I do use Windows. Currently I only have Linux installed on my hom systems and do not have any regrets. I refuse to buy Windows 7/8.
In my particular situation, a GNU/Linux OS is better for me, rather than using MS Windows. Simply because of where I am and the nature of my work and interests. Like the way GNU/Linux might be better suited for NASA's particular space station requirements.

I think NASA's decision to use Linux is a huge blow to M$ and its way of business. Also for the fact that Linux is far more superior as it comes to mass hardware. A feat M$ is trying to do but is loosing ground because they lack the kernel to be more expansive. Also Nasa doesn't want to update and be told they have to reboot now or having M$ do it for them.
Windows has it's place in the market and unfortunately for them its slowly going away from the platform they have dominated since the early 80's.
Most people don't really know how to use windows either they only know how to get on the internet and do some simple task such as MS Office, Games and Email which the tablet market is offering at a much lower price than a full PC.
In the end its not about the preference one has its about the functionality one needs.

That was pretty much a joke.
Anyhow, As of yet no significantly intelligent A.I. has been programmed.
However If I was gonna program a genius A.I. I would run it on Debian/TinyCoreLinux due to decreased OS overhead.

Eeeeeh... The man reason linux won't take over is the number of distros and their unwillingness to work together. Look up the video "why linux is the worst operating system ever" its a bunch of people who love linux but understand why it won't be able to quote unquote take over the world. I run ubuntu on my laptop, but only cuz it runs on my slow slow laptop.

isn't NASA also deploying some Android-powered satellites as well? i always thought they stuck to *NIX since the beginning though. some of the consoles in Apollo Missions appear to have ran some branch of UNIX of some kind, so their preference of Linux today is really no surprise.
