Help will OTA work without sim card?

jaliy

Android Expert
if i don't have a sim card from my carrier, will i get the latest 4.3 update without having to manually search for update?

i have set it to automatically update

Pretty sure your phone needs to be connected to the carrier in order for your carrier to push out the OTA update to you.

Unless you have the Google Edition S4, then you do not need the sim because the OTA push will come directly from Google over WiFi.

Google doesn't push updates for any Samsung product except for the Google edition S4 or nexus line

They probably misunderstood. Google does not push out direct consumer updates for carrier branded phones. Your phone carrier pushes those to your device.

so samsung releases the update, but i will only be notified thru my carrier with the sim card. otherwise i can only manually check for update?

by the way my mistake. they said samsung pushed the update

Do you have Kies? If so, perhaps that is an option you can check into for the update. My specific phone doesn't use Kies, so I would be unable to assist you with it as I don't know the software.

i have kies and it does show an update, just like it does when i go to settings-about phone-software update
i'm just wondering if i will ever be notified if i didn't manually check it

With Kies, I'm not sure. I do not know if Kies offers the ability to notify you on your phone, or if it does so on your PC somehow or if having a sim card makes a difference when you have kies. Hopefully someone with more knowledge about kies can answer that.

Did I still need to answer your PM, or was your previous post different? Just making sure you get the answers you need here in this thread in case I cannot help you (or don't have the answers) in PM.

no i'm not talking about notification from kies
i'm talking about notification from the phone, after the update is downloaded. it should ask me if i want to install the update

If it's a carrier-pushed update (your phone is branded by the carrier) the update won't be downloaded if the SIM card is out of the phone, because the phone won't be connected to anything sending out the update (which is the carrier's data signal - carriers don't send out updates by wifi.)

If you are in the US...Samsung pushes the update to the carriers, and the carriers do what they want to it and then push it out from there.

If you have an international phone you get updates from Samsung directly

ok that's what i thought. but when i called my carrier, they said they have nothing to do with the update. they told me to call samsung why my phone is not updating without sim card. she even asked her supervisor if sim card is required to update he said no

just called my carrier again. they said when samsung release an update, they will push it to the carrier first to be approved. once that's done, all the phones in that carrier will be notified of an update directly from samsung, not from carrier. so a sim card is not required

Fido
the parent company, Rogers, already had their s4 update available

Fido Mobile, as you know, have also released 4.3. However, as noticed with the European releases, a lot of these have been via Kies and not OTA initially. Therefore, there was no push notification on Kies updates as this relies on connecting to Kies. Hence the advice in post #26, mentioned previously...

Check both OTA, (Over the Air), and with Kies for update.

If Samsung are also offering the Fido update OTA, this can take time to push out notifications to handsets considering the volume of releases for the whole of Europe and Canada in the last 48 hours.

When you spoke to your carrier did you ask if a sim card was required to receive an update notification?

they said i don't need sim card to update cause it's from samsung. i can manually ota update, just not getting the notification telling me to install

I know that you can manually update via Kies. However, your question was about not receiving an update notification...

So, did you ask your carrier or not? Did you also ask if the update was also available OTA... as they are in the best position to answer both your questions.

i can manually update from kies AND from the phone by going to settings-about phone-software update

they said sim card has nothing to do with software update so it will notify me when it's available

just had an in depth conversation with my service provider and samsung. they said major update like this will not trigger automatic download as it could cost huge data fee if forgotten to set download over wifi only

so it has nothing to do with sim card as the update is pushed by samsung to all s4, after carrier added their bloatware to it.

that being said, did anyone actually receive notification that this update is available?
