Will the Xoom fail at Launch?

I was only talking about moving a million units. This topic is mute point if it fails or big sucess really wont make a big difference in the big scheme of things as far moto and android platform are concerned. That aside i dont see this tablet doing well and i see it suffering same fate as tab. With these new android tablets coming soon we will see how they meet the challange of apple and being competative in there own os android. This isnt stopping me from buying one though.

Regarding USB Host, there are only 2 upcoming tablets with that feature, that i've read about. They are the Toshiba tablet and the Acer Iconia A500

Weird, but true. Thing is, people are assuming the Xoom has it, but it appears not to.

I think you meant to say quanity, not quality.

Both. I have been with Android since the G1 was released, but the game and general app quality (especially games) is far better with iOS. No comparison.

Will Android get to the same level? Probably, but that is a long time from now. I am a gamer, so appreciate quality too (like most folks). Android has a few, but iOS has a bunch and growing.

For game and media apps (not video), my iPod spanks my Incredible and Gtablet and laughs while doing it. iPhone still sucks (IMO), but iPod rocks (again, IMO). I would bring up the Netflix app (which rocks), but Android should get that by late part of the year for newer chipsets with DRM.

added:

The one MAJOR shining point for Android are the great emulators (especially TigerMAME).

the iPad price is the same since it launched. How many apps did the iPad have available at launch time? I know they have quite a few now. But a fairer comparison is launch time.

iPad only- yes. Just like Android- same boat there, but far more active effort getting apps to native or scaling to iPad.

I have a Gtablet- not an iPad. Got an iPod though, since 64gb works great for tunes and games :) Selection of games is nice too :)

Due to no Flash, USB host, data storage, etc: I would take my Gtablet any-day over the iPad.

@rjoudry:

Yep! Been following Nvidia's efforts and one of the reasons I got the Gtablet :) Tegra 2 rocks!

PSX emulation is also sweet on the Tegra 2.... If you have PSX4Droid 1.6 or lower. The other versions are not as good and are slower.

A lot of people have been complaining about the $800 dollar cost of the XOOM. They say that Motorola should price the XOOM in the $500-600 dollar range so they can be cheaper than the comparative Ipad. This probably won't happen because Motorola has a superior product and they know it. They don't want to be a cheaper, value option to the Ipad. They want to go toe-toe with them because they believe the XOOM is a better device than the Ipad. I heard a lot of people say, "Why should I pay this much for a XOOM when I can get an Ipad for the same price or cheaper". Well, the answer to that question is because judging by what I have seen so far, the XOOM will be light-years ahead of the Ipad and unless Apple does an overhaul to their very vanilla iOS, the XOOM will be better than Ipad 2 as well. Motorola doesn't want to be fed table scraps from Apple's table. If Motorola dropped their price from $800 to $600 or came out the gate at $600 dollars, they would be viewed as a cheap Ipad alternative. Motorola would not be able to build that same brand loyalty if they started wavering on the price. Part of Apple's success is the fact that they set a price and stick by that price. Because of this arrogance, people actually started believing that the products were superior because they were more expensive. A lot of Apple consumers like to feel superior to others by owning a high end device with a high end price tag. Today, Apple users are paying a premium for the Apple logo. Motorola feels that the XOOM has what it takes to have that same kind of allegiance (I know that sucks for us consumers). I guess time will tell. I plan on buying a XOOM myself. I would pick a XOOM over any of the current Ipads (and probably over Ipad 2 also). I'm not rich by any means, so $800 dollars is a lot of money for me. Do I think that tablets in general are overpriced? Hell yes! But I also think that gas, cars, TV's and a college education are generally too expensive. But based on the market, the XOOM is priced right on the money. Now I don't advocate for anyone to spend money that they can't afford on a device. If $800 dollars is too steep, please don't buy it. In this economy we can't be doing stuff like that. Get a $500 Ipad instead. But just know that you can't compare the XOOM price head-to-head with a $500 or $600 (or any of them really) Ipad because we are talking apples and oranges. Ok, I'll get off of my soap box now!

600 wifi for this product equals win win. And 800 for a 3G/4G, with their specs. Seems logical to me.

Apple is going after the people like my wife, my mom, and my son. Ones that don't the ins and outs of anything outside email and surfing. The Zoom is going after people like us.

If this tablet turns out to be as great as all the blogs are making it out to be, and the price is the only negative thing people can say about it I would be find with that. Think of how the Xoom could have turned out; a Moto Blurred out 2.2 locked up bootloader failure that cost 499. To add even more insult to injury, Honeycombs SDK becomes available and after 10 months of no updates Moto tells everyone that xoom can't be updated to honeycomb because moto blur will not run stable with it.

If it takes 800 to keep from ever having a xoom like the the one described above, I am fine with that. 800 is high and like the rest of you, I feel Moto should have undercutted the 32gig 3g Ipad a little more so more of these can get into as many hands as possible, but its not like the price is not going to fall between now and when the next flood of competition gets here (ie ipad2, gslate, GT 10.1, playbook, palmpad, etc).

For now if the price doesn't matter to you, Xoom will be the best Tablet experience right now. I can't wait to get mine.

It's basic economics. $800+ $35 (Activation Fee) + $20 (1 Month Data at 1ghz) + Taxes = $900+ out the door.

Its actually more like the device plus tax. AFAIK the activation and 1st months data would be in your first bill. Since that isn't charged when you cancel the data plan within 3 days, it will be more like 850 with tax out the door. At least where I am located.

Like I said in a previous thread, The xoom could have been a Moto blurred 2.2 Failure that cost 499 and would never get Honeycomb because Moto will state that Blur will not run on it smoothly. Or be the "the early adopter" and pay 800 for what will most likely be the best tablet. The price is gonna fall without a doubt when the competition drops.

If 800 is too much, I highly suggest waiting for the other android tablets to flood in. Thats when pricing will be more competitive.

If the microsd does not work at launch and the internal space was not mapped to cover the microsd function, the device will be returned in droves. Surely the internal space was mapped as microsd 1. If not, a huge amount of apps will not work correctly and no apps2sd will work.

I am sure its mapped like the Droid X. No SD card is needed.

Not talking mainly apps2sd (per say), but a lot of apps dump data to the microsd 1 and will not work or install if no microsd.

Angry Birds is one of many apps that will not install without a microsd. Browsers like Dolphin and xScope are also apps that have problems, but at least install without a microsd.

Droid X allocates all internal space as device storage. Not the same thing and would be a waste of space if all 32gb were device storage on Xoom (no media then).

If the 32 GB cannot be used for general storage, apps, files, movies, music, etc, this will be a fail.

Gtablet has 16gb internal:

1.82gb for apps and the 13gb balance is mapped as microsd 1 (where apps store external data).

Without microsd 1, most apps that write to the microsd card in any way will not work correctly, or (in most cases) not even install.

Update:

This whole thing is too absurd to be missed by Moto and VZW, so must be allocated like the Gtablet, but more allocation due to twice the storage.

Funny thing if Motorola came out and said we will not launch until we have everything right, everyone would go bonkers. Screaming why can't they release what they have now! We can wait for the rest!

Just like CM7 roms. :D

I disagree if moto would have said xoom is coming Q2 it wouldnt have been a big deal since most tablets are coming then as well. Now if they did the its coming Q1 and then delayed yes it would caused an upset. Fact is now everyone knows moto was just trying to beat everyone to market even if it ment cutting cornors.

LOL. Who needs advertising when you got all of these threads perpetuating the Xoom news. Bad publicity is better than no publicity. :D

I love it!

I honestly think Moto is testing the waters with their 3g device price and has a back up plan, mainly the wifi only version, to offset poor overall sales. So, I don't think failing at launch would mean the Xoom itself has failed. I'm sure they can sell the XOOM 3g at $699 and still make a profit so why not try to sell it for more during launch when the hype is at it's highest. I think we will need to wait a year to even make the determination if the Xoom failed or not.

I had planned on getting one at launch. Honestly, I have a G-Tablet that does really well, I just have upgrade-itis sometimes.

I already felt like it was too expensive and wasn't happy about having 'after-market' 4g added in....but with the news of microSD not working out of the box and no Adobe Flash - I'm out!

I've been a sucker too many times only to have manufacturers not fully deliver (partially deliver) on future promises.

My $800 is pretty happy in my wallet and my G-Tab is functioning just fine. Heck, by the time they add in what they promise, I will likely already have a system dump of the Xoom running on my $250 G-Gtablet.....if not (and they deliver on their promises before competition arrives), I will buy my Xoom later. I can wait.

P.S. I just HATE the way manufacturers whip up a frenzy only to say just before release, "Oh I almost forgot....". They know that many will buy anyway at that point, whereas they wouldn't have if from the very beginning it had been revealed as incomplete.

my 1,000.00 clams (dont 4get accessories) is burning a hole in the concrete (already burnt my pants pocket). im sooo hyped to get this unit. looking 4ward to the 24th... :D

I don't think it will do well. I am buying one, but out of the tabs coming out I think the Samsung one will do the best by far.

If its really that compelling I'll return or sell my xoom and get the new tab.

It is ashame that they had to price it so high. Even with all the bells and whistles the Xoom provides, people are first checking the price. A $600 WiFi only version may be a better entry.

It is also amazing that they did very little drumming for the launch of the product. The best representation I saw was at the Honeycomb announcement.

I will not buy it because it is too big for my purposes. I am still looking for a viable 7" Honeycomb solution.

I'm not sure about Samsung yet. I guess it'll depend on price too. I'm just hoping that Samsung, Moto, LG, and HTC will duke it out and in turn will stabilize the tablet pricing. Maybe one of them will put out a tablet with awesome specs like the Moto Xoom but for a lower price which will hopefully trigger a price drop. I would also be sweet if Apple decides to lower their prices too. Competition between these powerhouses are always good for the consumer.
