Help Will this damage my phone?

I checked some other forums/threads and I couldn't quite get the answer I was looking for. Will turning the phone on and off consistently every morning/night damage my Incredible in any way? Or should I just keep it on the whole time, including charging?

This shouldn't have any negative effect.

Some people are having a problem with their power button sinking into the unit, but that gets pressed far more just turning the screen on and off, one extra long-press a day wouldn't be significant to that I don't think.
 
I would assume it has an on off button for a reason.... I cant see it hurting the phone. Your mental stability on the other hand will definitely be tested playing the battery game with this phone.
 
I'm not sure I understand. You're powering off the phone -- by holding down the power button -- every night?

There's no way this will damage your phone.

The only way this would affect your phone is that you're using the power button more frequently, so it's within the realm of possibility that the power switch itself might not last as long.

But unless you're pressing the button really hard, it's not likely that you'll wear it out within the practical life of the phone.
 
I was actually talking more in terms of the software of the device. I came from a bb storm and it was actually recommended to restart the phone consistently to help keep more memory free. Is this the same case with the Incredible? Do you think it will help or hurt, or it doesn't really make a difference?

You dont have to do battery pulls on Android Devices like you had to on BlackBerry and WinMo devices. It has built in task and memory management and optimizes itself. I have owned dozens of smartphones/PDA's and Android is in a whole nother league. Genius Phone if you will :D

It won't make a difference like your BB as far as software is concerned, unless you've encountered a problem. If you have some app misbehaving that doesn't want to shut down or something like that, just shutting the phone off and restarting it is often easier than trying to fight with it.

Actually, I need to look into if a solution for this has been found, but my wife actually encountered the alarm clock problem the other day where she got a text message while the alarm was going off and that made the dismiss screen go away. Could not figure out any other way to get the alarm to shut off (going into alarm app and disabling it didn't do anything, etc.). So, I just shut the phone off and turned it back on...way easier than trying to figure anything else out at 6am.

But no, you don't need to reboot it to "clear memory" or any of that kind of garbage on regular basis. Android doesn't have the terrible memory management issues that some other OSes have.
 
Thanks to all of you guys (and/or girls). I'm a new Android convert and just want to make sure that this "Genius" phone lasts as long as possible and that I'm treating it properly so as to consistently get the best performance from the phone. In the words of Ronald McDonald, "I'm Lovin It!"
 
I turn my phone off every morning for about 20 minutes to top off the charge, since charging while on only gets it like 93% charged
 
The only thing that'll be damaged is your physical on/off button. Mines is already starting to get flush with the phone and I don't ever turn it off :( (Due to all the times I need to wake the phone, SOMEONE MAKE A DAMN APP THAT UTILIZES THE OPTICAL TRACKPAD!)

Yes, please someone make an app that utilizes the trackpad. I don't mind paying a pretty penny for it either... All I want to do is press the trackpad to wake up my phone, then slide to unlock as usual... Is that too much to ask?;)
 
so we can be like an iphone? im from winmo so im used to using the button on top


edit: thought about it and maybe it would make unlocking faster
 
Not necessarily like an iphoneless... but I kind of want to put more use to my trackpad and have one more additional feature on the phone (like we don't have enough already, right?)... It's just a thought. Either way, still love my incredible.

Its more natural to unlock with the optical trackpad with how the phone is self up IMO. You don't have to readjust how you're holding the phone after you wake, if the phone was able to wake through the optical pad. There are sooo many people willing to pay for this (including myself)
