Yeah, I wasn't saying that I would actually leave Sprint. I do like their offerings. But they don't need to know that when I'm bargaining with them. And when I'm not contractually obligated to stay with them, I have more leverage. It's not rocket science :) They can choose to call my bluff, or they can take a very little hit and accommodate a 12-yr-old customer.

I have had 3 phones completely destroyed this year. Took in 3 phones to sprint. I have insurance on each phone. How much did I pay for the phones, 100 dollars each time? Nope, I never paid anything. Each phone, which died because of user damage, was replaced 100% free. I just went into sprint store, said something about verizon and lte, and 8 accounts, and what do you know, phones where replace 100% free.

Of course, if I was under contract, I would have to pay the 100 dollars or pay the etf. But if you dont think you can get anything more off contract, then please, get suckered into it.

I could really care less if you are not smart enough to figure out how to work the system.

On contract. I'll move my number from my EVO 4G to the EVO 3D and give the 4G to my wife to replace her crappy iPhone 3G, which has horrible phone performance and appears to need a new (hardwired) battery. So we'll end up on the same carrier under one billing, I'll be happy with new phone, she'll be happy with new(er) *functioning* phone. Happy wife = happy life! :p

Isn't the ETF $200 - $5/mo that your line is active and paid? Seems it would be cheaper just to cancel and sign a new contract for those that are worried about $$

I definitely agree that being off contract gives you more bargaining power, I just don't know that it's worth it. But I really think the big thing in your favor is being with them for 12 years.

I imagine having 8 lines even on contract would get you that much leverage. Regardless, I don't really bank on breaking my phone, and I only have one line. Staying off contract makes zero sense for my situation. I'm glad you think I'm not smart enough to "work the system," but let's see if the years of calculus and progress on my PhD paid off with a little math:

Off Contract:
$450 * 8 = $3600 for 8 Evo 4Gs (at Sprint or $4800 at BB)

On Contract:
$200 * 8 = $1600 for 8 Evo 4Gs

You received services that would cost $300 with a contract, so lets take contract price up to $1900. How exactly did you come out ahead other than feeling cool when you tell people you have 8 Evos and can leave Sprint (to use them.... nowhere?) whenever you want? Let's say that ALL of them broke... $1600 + $800 = $2400. So even then, you're paying a $1200 premium to stay off contract. Then let's say they all broke TWICE. Well then we get somewhere -> $3200. This would also be the same price as if you cancelled the contract the day after you started and paid the ETF for all of them. So you're only paying $400 premium to stay off contract each way! You can pay someone to wax your Corvettes ;-)

I tend to avoid being rude to people, but don't attempt to insult my intelligence :-)

Anyway, I'm on contract. I bought the Evo at retail last year and will use my upgrade this year. I have no reason to avoid a contract with Sprint.

P.S. It isn't really "getting suckered into it" when you are making an educated financial decision.

To start, check you math you really messed it up. Please proof read before you post.

I can get a lot of things out of sprint, but I can not get 8 evo's upgraded every year. I can get 2 of them upgraded and if I really ask nicely, 4 upgraded, but I really cant get all 8.

Could you please tell me, in you phd intelligence, how you get all 8 evo's upgraded?

Because, off contract, I only spend 600 more dollars every 2 years, more then you do. What do I get out of it, well so far I got the 10 dollar fee waved, which is 960 dollars and 300 dollars in free repair. Just because I am off contract and asked nicely.

So I spend 600 dollars more every 2 years. I get out of the whole thing 1260 dollars of options which I am pretty sure a person that just started on contract could not get.

But if you got a sure fire way to upgrade all 8 lines every year, please share.

Where would I go? I get a 80% company discount from verizon, not bad.

Sorry for that error with the ETF. It should be $1600. Thanks for catching that. Also, I was unaware that you couldn't upgrade all the devices. I've never had that many, so I figured it was like getting all of them as a new customer. I guess never having 8 phones on a family plan where my company pays for nearly everything and not breaking them makes me pretty dumb... Oh wait, no. It just means you have a VERY unique situation. For your situation (i.e. company paying for everything and buying Evos for all your pets) it seems like staying off contract is the smartest thing to do. I definitely agree that staying off contract gives you a bargaining chip, but it's one that isn't really worth it for us lowly one-phone customers. I guess when my wife, children, and grandparents all have Evo 3Ds, it'll be worth it for me to stay off contract.

So now that you've given the whole story, I agree that staying off-contract is a great idea for you, but the way you went about justifying it to begin with (and the subsequent rude posts) was misleading to say the least. You were obviously looking for an argument. I'm sorry I took the bait :-(

P.S. I proof-read your post (bold items in the quote) too, since you were so kind to do mine :-) You should probably lay off telling people to proof their posts unless you're going to do so yourself (I especially loved "in you phd intelligence" lol).

P.P.S. Sorry for feeding the troll. I'll stop replying to him now.

RiverOfIce, yourfriendmat - cool it. No one wants to read bickering - and no one cares who started what.

But DAAAAAAAD!

Sorry :-( I normally don't let myself get into the "proving people wrong on the internet" thing. I usually prefer more intelligent discussion. And I really was trying to discuss benefits of staying on contract since that's what the post was about. Just got out of control. Again, sorry.

Take it to PM, this thread has a topic.

I'll set the example:

I like Sprint. I don't mind extending my contract (again) - tends to lock in prices anyway.

So - subsidized for me is probably going to make the most sense (gold status).

I have been wondering about something for a while and too lazy to call Sprint. Maybe one of you guys can answer this for me...

Here's the scenario:
Gold status, 1 year into a 2 year contract.
You take the full 1 year upgrade and sign a 2 year agreement.
Are you now under contract for 3 years (the 1 year you had remaining plus the 2 year contract you just signed) or only 2 years?

Same. I've always had good experiences, and I really like the employees at my local store. This discount is totally worth it for my needs, and I take really good care of the phone. I'm actually kind of pushing for Gold Status anyway (via longevity as opposed to price).

My friend's Verizon contract was sold to AT&T and he can't use his Droid anymore, so he and I will be getting Evo 3Ds together lol.

Will only qualify for the $75 discount. Not going to extend my contract another 2 years for that measly discount. Who knows what carriers will bring next year. Though, I may attempt a phone call to retentions to grant me the full discount this time around.

try emailing them at sprintcares@sprint.com . I did it last night and today in around 11 am they called me from a weird # no lie lol this was the number 914-407-214055 noticed it the extra 55 . But thats not the point . the point is they called and told me they got my email and were going to fix my eligibility . All they asked me was my security question and fixed it . I tried on sprint website , bestbuy and radio shack upgrade checker and it was fixed . They will help you so send them an email .

I'm going to subsidized route. I've been out of contract since October (and had my upgrade since August), but have been waiting for something new to "grab me." Looks like the 3D is it, and since I've had very few issues with Sprint (along with it being cheaper), I see no reason not to re-up for two years.

Already called them this morning and received the discount. In fact, they seemed happy to oblige. Win-win.:D

Thats Awesome! My upgrade is not till late this year, at which point I will hit my 10 year anniversary and become eligible for yearly upgrades, but I do not want to wait that long to get my EVO 3D. I will certainly try asking for an early upgrade. Sprint was kind enough to allow me to upgrade 2 months early when I got my EVO 4G last year, too. Based on what I see in regards to Sprint being generous and giving everyone one last yearly upgrade, certainly says a lot about Sprints customer service. I'm impressed. :)

I do have to say, in the economic climate we are in right now, this is a bit of a welcome surprise to me. I realize that Sprint is number three in the nationwide retailer scheme of things, but they are still a big company. To re-set the discount to a fully subsidized phone for pretty much anyone that asks is nice to see.

I know it will lock folks into a contract, but seeing as how the same people are most likely already in a contract and only extends that roughly a year still makes me place Sprint above Verizon and AT+T.

Only 2 years - it's like a reset.

(Based on upgrades for both wife and I working that way, last year and this.)

Awesome. Thanks for the info.

Okay that brings me to a couple more questions...

So say it's a family plan. The primary line gets the gold status upgrade every year, the other lines don't. All lines are 1 year into a 2 year contract.

So the primary line gets the full upgrade every year, the other lines get $75 off, right?

And that would only reset all of the contracts back to 2 years, or would the secondary lines go up to 3 year contracts?

Here's the main question though: on the secondary lines, if you take that $75 discount after a year and sign another 2 year contract, do you get the full upgrade the next year or is it only another $75 discount?

Dont worry about 3 year contracts, there are no such thing with Sprint

No, taking the 75 bucks will start a two year contract from that day.

99.9% sure of this.

RiverOfIce, yourfriendmat - cool it. No one wants to read bickering - and no one cares who started what.
Oh we where not bickering, where just throwing food at each other.

It was all in good fun, I was laughing through most of it.

The bottom line. Unless you get a discount on the majority of your lines every year, it is 100% pointless to extent your contract. Going off contract means that if your phone breaks, you can talk them into fixing it. If you don't like the premier data fee, you can get them to remove it. If you want the wifi hotspot and you ask nicely, they will give it to you for free.

Mostly people got shafted on the changing of premier status, which means they will have to wait 2 years before they can upgrade, which means that you really don't win if you early upgrade.

And for the record, given my discount, it I just got phones for my whole extended family, 4 sisters, mother, and their families.

Now if you only have 2 phones and you get an early full upgrade on one of them, then you win.
