Windows 10, Yay or Nay?

As for Office, there has never been a working version of MS office for Linux. LibreOffice is the de facto office suite with most linux distros now. and it handles MS documents quite well.

WPS Office for Linux is now available in English, has excellent MS Office document compatibility, better than Libre Office from experience.

....and it is from China of course. :thumbsupdroid:

Although FWIW most of my major document work is done in MS Office 2011 for Apple Mac. :)

BTW unlike Cheetah Mobile, Kingsoft don't tend to hide where they come from.

I remember 40 years ago Japanese products were generally considered cheap junk in the U.S. ... a decade or two later they were the standard for quality. I'm thinking China is turning their image perception around, too ('bout time :) )

China? turning it around? since when?

this is my butt in seat feeling......
per all the Asians in my life.. (that is a lot)
they are all keeping away from China made anything and everything...
in the next year or two.. china is going to be in sever trouble with exporting goods.

South Korea products are currently the big quality leader.

It's not really caused much trouble for Huawei, ZTE, Lenovo, Oppo, Haier, TCL, Hisense etc.

South Korea products are currently the big quality leader.

Which is basically Samsung or LG, and where are many of their products actually made these days?

"Made by Samsung in China" that's what it states on many Galaxy S6, etc.

I'm getting a piece of the action.....
Englishman living in PRC @mikedt.

....anyway enough OT...back to Windows 10, Yay or Nay? :)

40 years ago, Made in Japan was considered crap in the UK as well, along with "Made in Hong Kong", they don't make much of anything in Hong Kong these days.

Considering Apple products are Chinese, and Harbor Freight sells mostly Chinese manufactured stuff, I'm thinking they aren't doing too badly... as with any other country, there's good quality and bad quality.

As for Windows 10, I'm saying Yay: the annoying mouse gestures are gone, and the feel of the OS is smoother, if you get my meaning. More intuitive? I don't know. I like it better than 8.1 at any rate, though I still only power Win up about once every other week.

I'm going to move Dngrswife over to it, soon I think.

true.. China tech stuff is doing ok...

I was referring to everything else...
food and toys and clothes.. people are actively choosing NOT to purchase Chinese made stuff.

Indeed, they're choosing places like Bangladesh instead. :p

Basically China is becoming too expensive for the manufacture of certain things, like cheap apparel.

Anyway that's enough OT for the moment, P&CA is over there =====>> ;)

Back to the OP, a qualified Yay. I on;y use Microsoft's finest every coupleof weeks or so, and wadw thought a ton of updates each time. 10 is significantly slicker on both my desktop and laptop (Both dual booting Linux).

Okay, in case y'all were worried, I've started over. Now, when I boot, I see this log splash:
Windows 7 – same old W7HP setup
Windows 9 – the above, upgraded to W10Home
Windows 10 – fresh install of W10 with no trace of my setup

Why did I do it? Just to see if I can, I guess, since I'm not likely to ever switch to 10 en toto. I also have Rollback Home launching in the 7 partition and Linux Mint hiding on a stick. All this on a ten year old HP desktop!

Mmmm

I use Linux and ChromeOS. I have honestly not yet seen any computer running Windows 10 (other than in an advert). But then I live in a small French village where electricity is not as reliable as sunrise and not everyone knows what it is (electricity).

But seriously, here, Linux (with the French government) and Apple seem as big as MS.

I just got a full Office suite (including Visio and Project) through work, so I may end up spending more time in Win 10 than I normally would expect to.

a week ago.. there was a hugh update to win 10.. it took my laptop almost 2 hrs to complete..

it seems to be running a lot better...
IE still seems to studder a lot... and my mouse still hangs after KB use.

that is what forced me into the Windows camp many years ago with Win3.0 and then of course all of the "upgrades" thru Win7 when I retired...

Win10 I intentionally installed on a brand new ASUS laptop 8.0
Used that for a couple of months, then became dissatisfied with the way it works.
Formatted hard drive and installed Linux Mint 17.3

as the laptop is only used for browsing the internet, that is likely as far as that one will go. I think it will be nice to be able to turn the laptop on and not be DEAD IN THE WATER for hours because of some stupid Windows Security Update that has to be applied, and I am sitting in a hotel room on a piss poor WiFi signal......

all of my productivity work in my personal home office is stuck on Win7 with an app to ensure that it stays that way. Decades of work stored there, I know where it all is, so why change it?

http://blog.ultimateoutsider.com/2015/08/using-gwx-stopper-to-permanently-remove.html

this program will stop it dead in its' tracks

... aaaand somebody spilled water into my laptop.

No telling right now whether I'll be able to dry it out and use it or if it's done for.

Looks like the hard drive is intact, at least.
