Windows 10, Yay or Nay?

At least everytime Windows updates are forced on me my start menu doesn't crash requiring me to reboot often in the middle of doing something. That drove me crazy
 
From this point forward, all Intel and AMD CPUs are Windows 10-only

This transition has happened before — all hardware typically reaches a point where previous operating systems aren’t supported — but I can’t remember it happening this quickly. That’s partly because Windows 7, like Windows XP before it, became a long-lived OS. While it didn’t ship as Microsoft’s primary operating system for nearly as long as Windows XP, it was still more popular than Windows 8 until months after Windows 10’s debut. Pushing Windows 7 off the support tree, seven years after it was released, may make sense. Windows 8.1, on the other hand, is less than three years’ old.

yup, I am keeping my Win7HP up todate with the security things, and every couple months, I make a complete clone image of it....

Keeping about 6 images this time around... made a mistake of only having two a while back, and didn't realize a nasty little Firefox critter crept in before I was aware it existed.... all efforts to purge that little tiny critter were useless..... one hell of a mess when you have to reimage the whole damn hard drive, just because one little tiny app is broken :( I am still finding little things that aggravate me that have been lost... not getting suckered into that black hole again.

I think the article is a bit misleading. While the new processors may not be compatible with the older versions of Windows, Linux is alive and well. I only purchase hardware and peripherals from vendors that provide Linux drivers / support (unless the distro has it natively). I also use less than "cutting edge" hardware to save money. I wouldn't drive a Porche to work if my '98 escort gets me there and back :D

Interesting article if you want to rid yourself of (unused or nagging) Win10 apps. Apparently CCleaner has this ability now. I cannot verify/test as my copies either didn't come with any (LTSB editions) or I manually gutted them earlier. Anyone care to image their Win10 installation (for safety) and give this a shot? Just curious if this actually works and/or if the forced updates re-installs them. Perhaps I can find some time to setup a test box in a week or so to find out myself...
 
If you missed the free upgrade to Win10 deadline, this may be of assistance. Untested by me, but I downloaded the file from my Linux box JIC. Why pay for it if you can still get it (the upgrade that is) for free?

BTW, you can get the ISO of choice (from a mac or Linux box) from here if you need a copy. Its the latest version (1607). Unfortunately, the Enterprise Version isn't available :(

I still get no Win10 nags since having “Never 10” installed. Whether Win10's leaving me alone is because of Never10, I'll never know because I'll never run Win7 again without it. Keeps the tigers way too.

I am downloading the Single Language version now, on the Hospital's WiFi....

all the visitors are gone, and now the WiFi is moving along pretty good again.
 
Oh yeah, I have used that Open up battery trick a couple of times before....

and yeah, replacing the motherboard on a laptop is not for the faint of heart at all.....
neither is replacing the hard drive for the same reason.
 
Hard drives are usually not too bad.

My daughter's laptop has a broken power connector, though... likely going to have to pull the mainboard to resolder the connections. Luckily, I have the best equipment at work.

... just hate having to disassemble the stoopid thing.

I usually find a YouTube tear down article to preview twice before I start, so that I know where to start, if I have never worked on a particular model before.

I have a very fine, top of the line ASUS gaming laptop, now 6 years old, thought it had a bad hard drive, and it turned out to be a bad BIOS.......

called ASUS to get that fixed, and decided it is not worth what they want.....
now I have to tear it all apart again to get the new HD out of it.
 
Couple of quick bits. Decided a month ago to find out what was all the hype about dual displays. Now I can't function without it. Then I ventured into the SSD realm. Now I have no patience for HDD. I'm now in search of the fastest processor I can afford. Why am I doing this?

The 4th Gen i7 is pretty decent.. 2.6Ghz overclockable to 3.6Ghz (Niiiiice!).. Dunno the cost of a processor only but it came with my laptop and I couldn't be happier
 
I'm looking for something unlocked so I can overclock the crap out of it. Unfortunately I've got a funky socket so my choices are limited...........unless I replace the Motherboard.............:eek:

There's an interesting article about "Limited Unlock" here. See if your MB/Processor (Socket 1155 I assume?) qualifies. Might gain 10% or so if things work out.

EDIT: Check out CPU compatibility for your particular motherboard. Sometimes a simple BIOS update will allow later/faster processors. Pretty much depends on the MB chipset.

I have the desktop version (i7-4790K Devil's Canyon). OC's easily & stable to 4.4GHz, though I could certainly push it higher. Still pricey as heck ($325 @ Newgg w/current promo code). Got VERY lucky and found a bad one at work in the recycle bin (cooler had come loose). Was still covered by warranty, so I got a brand new one basically free. Popped it into an Asus Z97-E (Currently $99 A/R) and it screams in both Win10 LTSB and Mint. Still a WIP due to way too much going on at home, but I can hardly wait until making it my main desktop. What baffles me is WHY these still cost as much as the i7-6700K 8M Skylake?

Wait until you try 3 IPS monitors. Can never go back to a TN display once you go IPS. Maybe a 2nd mortgage is in order? :)

The i5 is 3.1Ghz, but it can be clocked to 3.4. That fits right into to your 10% increase. I have updated the BIOS through HP. Thanks for the link. I perused a few BIOS forums trying to find an unofficial update but no luck yet.
The exact nature of my MOBO still remains a bit of a mystery, apparently HP doesn't know what they put in there.

That's what I hate about oem's = crippled BIOS's - Dell, HP, etc. They get MB's in bulk and make them idiot/tweaker proof. Even THEY don't know what's inside. About the only thing I get oem is laptops (though I've found some great deals on pre-built desktops to flip). For personal use, I prefer to build what I want and can use pieces/parts I have already accumulated. Dog gone slickdeals.net....

EDIT: Hay, 3.4 ain't too shabby ;)

did you try their online catalog? Give your model/serial number and it should tell you exactly which board is in it.
