Wireless charging?

Sounds to me that LG Curved phone that just came out would be perfect for you...
I'm quite happy with the GS5. Why would a curved phone be perfect for me? Why would you suggest a different phone when we are talking about cases? Having happily used Incipio and Sedio on a GS3 and Moto Atrix 4G, I'll go with what has worked comfortably in the past.

Get a new phone to replace my new phone? ROTFLMAO! You're a funny guy!

Contradicting yourself a bit here ;)

I literally hated holding in my hand even before trying to place a call. My hand is curved. The case isn't. My hands aren't particularly big or small but I imagine for someone with large hands it won't be an issue.
The Incipio Feather Shine case you ordered is not curved, it is flat ...the stock S5 is not curved... and the new LG is. Read your quote. ;)

Maybe I misunderstood what you were trying to say?

Yes, you did misunderstand. I was talking about the edges of the cases, not the flat front and back. The Spigen has the band around the device that is flat on the outside with corners. The other two cases have curved sides/edges with no right angles digging into your hand!

OK, gotcha! My bad! :o

That issue wouldn't bother me at all.

I guess this went from a "wireless charging" note to a "case" rant. The Samsung wireless back works great but adds a lot of thickness to the phone. A lot. The numerous w/c receivers available (or soon to be) are wafer thin and easily fit under the std back without a bulge. Now do they compromise the waterproof seal? We don't know yet but a receiver that is shaped to be contained within the seals SHOULD be ok. So the salient issues with the s5 receivers is 1. Does it charge, 2. Does it retain the "waterproof-ness" and 3. Is NFC still functional (if that rocks your boat)? As for warranty, I expect that anyone filing a warranty claim that was using w/c would remove the receiver prior to returning to the shop, just common sense. No evidence of ever using w/c-ing would exist. As to heat? The technology generates heat, period. Has that damaged a phone or fried a battery? Who knows? I have used w/c-ing for about 350 days and see no degradation in my stock battery or phone. And we're using two phones (s3 and s4 - 350X2 days) on two bedside pads. Placing it on my samsung pad at night takes about 20% of the effort of plugging it in/out and with the new s5 USB flap it should be REQUIRED for charging. It is a slower charging scheme and I miss COUNTLESS hours of sleep worrying about Mah charging rates every night. When the alarm goes off? 100%. And yet w/c "chicken littles" abound. I'm not going back to Froyo and I'm certainly not going back to plug charging. And with the s5 flap, it's a no brainier.

Question:

Does the phone have to sit on the charging pad face up on it's back? I ask because I use my phone as an alarm clock and I need that little bitty speaker to be face up on my night stand so I can get it's full effect to wake me :)

Has to face up and can't have a thick case on phone. My S5 runs much hotter wireless charging than my S4 did.

Agreed, and good to know that you've seen good results and no harm over the long term with previous phones.

Why might inserting a w/c receiver interfere with NFC and what exactly are the w/c "chicken littles" claiming?

I have been considering the WC feature, but if it makes it any thicker than it is, will probably not get it. (when available)

I definitely do NOT want to sacrifice the Water Resistant feature...

I once lost a good phone in 2 inches of water. I was washing the dirt and cobwebs out of my home outside A/C unit's fins and it slipped out of my pocket un-noticed plopping down in a puddle.

It probably would have been okay if I had found it and just placed in it a large bag of white rice.

BUT, what did I do? I used the wife's phone of course and called it up...
I saw the water ripple a tiny bit, and the phone died, right there.....

The currently available kits that include a card that fits inside the stock back shouldn't change the thickness at all (haven't received mine yet so can't say for certain).

Agreed that water resistance is a priority so it's important to not tweak the tab covering the charging port.

No charging pad for me! It is more hassle than the charging flap. After I've had the phone a week now, it is now very easy and quick to open that flap or put it back. Maybe takes a whole second more than no flap. It is a small sacrifice to have a waterproof phone AND a faster USB. :)

Yeah the flap is not as big of a deal as some might make it, however, I worry that the wear and tear of opening the flap will eventually mean it doesn't seal as well..... And the day that I need that ip67 cert will come but my phone won't make it.

When parts become available for the S5, I will buy an extra flap, just like I have an extra battery... just in case.

I have used the Fonesalesman one on my S4 forever and intend to get one for the S5 ASAP. Can't go backwards to plug and charge. It fits with the std back and you will never know it's there.

Same here. Used the fonesalesman receiver unit that tapes to your battery on my S4 with multiple base units. Flawless. Already ordered one for my S5.

Once you start using wireless charging, you will never want to plug in your phone again.

I have a feeling that the Fonesalesman will not be all that good to use for the S5 or other phones with the huge batteries because it uses the mini-USB port from an external power source.

When I have my S5 connected to the USB port of my computer, or the normal charger that came with my Galaxy S, it just barely charges.... the rate is so slow, it would take all night or longer.

The charger supplied with the S5 will charge the phone from 5% battery to 100% battery in 90 minutes.

The Fonesalesman does NOT use the USB port in any way. It uses the same internal charging contacts that Samsung uses with its big fat charging case. Mine charges overnight while I sleep, period. Whether that takes 15 minutes or 4 hours is clueless to me. I'm sleeping! Yeah socking in a bunch of spare USB plugs for when they (eventually will) fail seems like a great strategy. Keep on plugging....
I've moved on.

When you say "not be all that good" I'm guessing you mean not very fast, is that correct? Plugging the phone into the stock charger (which is plugged into AC) is probably the fastest way to charge. If fast is what you need then that's the way to go. Typically I charge overnight and get through the day without additional charging, so using a slower wireless charger overnight is fine. The point of a wireless charger is not just convenience - it protects the flap and avoids wear to the USB port caused by plugging/unplugging the cable. This isn't trivial. One reason I upgraded from the Droid DNA is the USB port wore out from almost two years of charging with a cable and now that phone won't charge reliably.

Like you said, move on... or socking whatever that means. :p
They say you should unplug the cable when it's fully charged for various reasons and you can't do that when your sleeping.
I like to spend my money on something else. No biggie taking a second to plug in the cable... or another second to plug the flap in... maybe most people are more clumsy and take longer... I'm gonna keep on plugging...

Can you link to where it says the cable should be unplugged (presumably from the wireless Qi pad) after the battery is fully charged? (I looked at the site and couldn't find it). For what it's worth the Droid DNA also came with a cover for the usb port. There was no claim for water resistance - it was presumably just a dust cover - and although I was careful with it it eventually broke off. The real problem came much later when the USB port finally wore out from plugging the cable. If I want to use that phone again I'll have to get a wireless kit for it. But I'm not trying to tell you you're wrong for thinking differently about it. These devices have a fairly short lifespan in any case. Follow your bliss :)

I've read it in different places to unplug when fully charged on battery subjects.
An example is this one:
Professional Charging
Battery Doctor regulates the manner in which your device is charged with a Unique 3 Stage Charging system to ensure you get the most out of your battery and reminds you not to over charge. It also has features that can monitor and regulate power consumption.

A battery is a battery whether you charge it via cable or wireless. Even the S5 will say "fully charged, unplug the cable" on the screen when it's charged. ;)

Lets say the usb flap does break some day, I'll just plug in a new one and only if the weather is bad or I'm around water, dust or sand otherwise why bother.
My S3 did just fine a year and it didn't have a flap. I didn't buy the phone because it was waterproof and I don't use my cell phone while sitting on the can either. So the flap is a minor deal to me. I don't worry about these phones wearing out as I change phone every year anyways right along with my notebooks. Look at how many phones I've had in my sig.

Yes, you interpreted what I meant correctly.
I fully understand the problems with always using the USB port to charge a phone. My Galaxy 'S' is very finicky now getting a good connection to charge it up. 2-1/2 years of constant use, and having to charge it 3 or 4 times a day to keep up with my style of heavy use....

I might get a wireless solution, depends on if it will work with my Speck Grip case.

So the official samsung wireless charging back is thicker than the standard one? Where did you find this out? Link?

I definitely don't want to make it fatter!
