Wireless charging?

The "official" Samsung charging back does add significant depth to the phone that even Samsung's marketing dept will admit:
http://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/cell-phones-accessories/EP-CI950IWUSTA
If you can find a side by side shot it is readily apparent. May not fit some cases as Samsung states.
The internal receivers such as Fonesalesman and others are as thin as a dime so fit within the stock case with no bulge. They utilize charging contacts that lie near the sim inside the case. When placed on a Qi pad such as Samsung's and others it charges till it gets to 100% then shuts off. That isn't a function of the charging pad but a function of the phone just like it was plugged into the USB charger. The phone says "stop charging" not the charging devices. When placed on a charging pad with the receiver in place the phone pops up a banner that says some like "charging wirelessly". I still use the USB port for long car trips or traveling but it is a hassle once you are used to charging wirelessly. Fumbling around in the dark trying to find a cable, is it right side up? Add the flap to that equation? MUCH faster than placing it on a pad. That USB port plug (the weakest link in the S5 charging scenario IMHO) makes wireless charging is a no brainer. But some folks will be charging their S11's in 2020 via USB carrying a pocketful of spare USB plugs around. "Because I always did it that way".

T'would be great if Samsung can carry it off. I'd go that route if so. We will have to wait until it's available to know for sure. Nice to be able to swap in a fresh battery without much thought. The other Qi receivers usually taped to the battery and one had to be sure all was well before snapping the case shut. Hopefully the new w/c case is in the pipe. Priced competitively.

I installed one of these, works good but runs a little hot. Had one on my S4 also didn't seem to run as hot.
Black Qi Standard Wireless Charger Charging Pad Receiver for Samsung Galaxy S5 | eBay

Quick review:

I received this wireless charging kit yesterday. It includes the receiver card, Qi charging pad and a USB cord to plug the pad into a USB port. There's no AC adapter and also no instructions.

It's easy to remove the back of the S5. The receiver card has a strip of double-sided sticky tape to make it easy to stick to phone. Unfortunately the tape doesn't hold the receiver firmly against the battery charging contacts. I wound up cutting a small cardboard square (from a business card) and stuck it on the receiver card opposite the contacts so when the back is on it takes up the slack and makes the connection solid. After that placing the phone on the pad consistently produced the "wireless charging, you have placed the device within range" message on the phone. I also noticed that the phone stops charging when it reaches 100% - no problem there. When the phone is charging it does get a little warm, but nothing to worry about. It seems safe to ignore the numerous warnings about fire danger that came with the kit, apparently in lieu of instructions LOL.

In a nutshell I feel this is an acceptable solution for the money, but I would have preferred a receiver card that fit better out of the box.

Edit: Wireless charging is working fine with the Spigen Hard Ultra Fit Case

Thanks for the review.
Black Qi Standard Wireless Charger Charging Pad Receiver
I don't buy anything off eBay anymore. Got screwed on there too many times in the past, so where else can I buy this?

I know I could google this, but it would be nice to see a link here.

So looking on ebay and amazon there are lots for Samsung s5 but they say i9600. Mine shows as an sm-g900. Just want to make sure to get the right one.

I looked and saw it is $18.99 w/free shipping from Hong Kong.
Hmmm, decided I would give it a try.

If you had not commented on it working with your case, I would not have ordered it.

I have a rather thin case on my S5, just got my wireless charging adapter piece yesterday, installed, added a tiny bit of thickness to the middle of the back cover.. but my case goes on no problem. Using the Nokia wireless charging pad, I put my phone on it, comes on and says it is within range and charging, see the lightning bolt, and it does go up a little... then if the phone goes to sleep, when I go back and check, it appears that it stopped charging, either less or same battery strength and no lightning bolt, then it pops up saying it is wirelessly charging... does the phone need to have the screen on when charging with wireless charger???
would an app like battery doctor that shuts a lot of stuff down when asleep cause this?
Thanks

For those that ordered this charging system, from the pics it looks like the base has a recess that the S5 fits right in? is this the case, would make it easy to use, as my Nokia wireless charging pad is flat and smaller than my phone so I have to try to center it for best charging results/

When I put my S5 on the pad the screen comes on momentarily giving the "within range etc" message and then goes off and mostly stays off (comes on very occasionally in response to incoming data but I'm not sure what). If the room is dim enough you can see the amber light glowing indicating that the phone is charging. I would try removing the case to see if that makes a difference. If it doesn't then I recommend doing what I did which is add a couple of layers of tape between the back and the wireless receiver card right behind the contacts to apply some pressure to the contacts. That solved the intermittent charging issue for me. Hope that helps :)

The Itian base is flat and doesn't help to center the phone, however it is slightly larger than the S5 and I don't experience any fussiness about positioning the phone for reliable charging. Hope that helps.

Mine does the same with this Qi charger.

I also insert a piece of business card laid on top of the Qi charger. Then popped the case back on. It made the slightest bit of a hump in the appearance of the phone's back side.

This charger is $18.99 and includes the charging pad.

Since my S5 is housed in a Speck CandyShell Grip case, it can't be seen anyway.

So, with that set up, yours charges through the SPECK candyshell case all the time, with the business card piece on top of the contact area? I have a different charging cell, from ebay, the tabs seemed to be touching well, but not sure if it's my charger, or if there is a setting that has to be changed in battery doctor, etc, because as long as the screen is on, it's fine and then at some point, when the phone is asleep it stops charging.

yes, it will charge thru the Speck CandyShell case "sometimes". Other times it won't.

I decided that since it only cost $18.99 that it is a very low power, cheaply built wireless charger and pad. I have a choice, put up with it and remove the case (takes 3 seconds) or spend $75+ bucks on a professional wireless charger. You guess what I did.... yup, did not spend any more money.

The first time I charged the phone thru the case. I opened the lockscreen, brought up Battery Doctor and laid the phone on the charger pad. It took a while, but the charger light turned ON and Battery Doctor reported charging to be working.

I left it all night. Next morning Battery Doctor reported 100% charge.

The next time the pad would not charge through the case.... hmmmm, slipped the case off and laid the phone on the charger pad with the screen locked. Only took 2 seconds for the blue charge light to come ON, and 1 more second for the S5 to beep and display "charging".

I'm going to use the slip case off method and not spend anymore money.... seems to work fine, and I noted that the charger runs cooler if the case is off the phone.

... Oh, I have the Galaxy Charging Current app and it reports that the cheap wireless charger is putting 750 mA into the battery.

Was hoping it would charge through the case more reliably. For that few seconds it would take to take the case off, I might as well, just pop open the cable cover and plug it in.

Yeah, the convenience of just placing the phone on the pad without having to fuss with it is part of the appeal. It might still be worth it to take the case off and avoid wear and tear on the tab and port. Fortunately it works with my case (a hard, thin Spigen). If it didn't I'd have to do something else because the case doesn't come off easily. Which case are you using?

After reading all these post, I'm not considering any kind of wireless pad anymore. I can plug it in easy enough anymore as I had over a months practice now. Takes all of ONE second to unplug & put the tab back on or to pull the tab and plug in.

I've got it now, so I am going to keep using it.

Best feature is less use of the USB port and wearing out the contacts. That was a problem with my previous phone. All of the charging cords quit working and had to be replaced, and making sure a new cord will charge is a bit of an exercise.

But it is 3 years old now and still works great other than that.

I use to have my previous 10 year worth of phone in my sig, but now they're not showing up??? Because I want to say "with all my previous phones, at leas 10 of them, I never once had a problem with the cords or contacts wearing out"... You must be rough on your gear...

*******Hey Moderators, why is my sig not showing anymore???
Oh... now it is showing up after I edited it!

It seems clear that you are very gentle with yours, but it's worth noting that there are many different types of ports/cables and some may more prone to wear over time than others. I've had a number of phones and my Droid DNA is the first to have the USB port become unreliable from the many times it was plugged/unplugged to charge and to connect to my PC. I don't know if it was port design, or poor quality control, or my not being gentle enough. Also the DNA had a plastic port cover like the S5 and although I tried to be careful it eventually broke off. The DNA made no claim to be water resistant, but since the S5 does it seems like a good idea to me to leave the tab alone as much as possible. JMHO of course :)

Nearly all of my previous chargers were less than $3.00 on evilbay

I doubt seriously they had much in the way of quality contacts....

I just received a new better quality charger and cord and noticed that the old Galaxy S immediately starts charging with it. So the phone's internal contacts must still be "good".
