Root Wireless Tether and GB

p3 tweeted that his friend got busted. They made him pay 300 plus dollars.

I won't believe it until more than 1 person says so. n=1 does not a trend make. Especially when that person is someone who's track record is so-so (yes, he gets the leaks, but his actual info is wrong as often as not, and his posts just ramp up the drama)

I also never understood why people all of a sudden took this anti-WT stance. Can someone please explain how they are now cracking down, as opposed to before?

I understand that one way is that you can no longer directly download wireless tether through the market if you are on verizon.

Are they now implementing tracking somehow?

I skimmed through P3Droids post, and nothing but vague statements were made.

Here's what happened...VZW called up Steve Jobs at Apple and asked him if they could use Apple's IPhone tracking system, that Steve uses to track all of his IPhone customers, to track all of the VZW customers that use wireless tethering. So, Steve agreed and VZW gave him the top secret closed Android OS and Steve programmed in some top secret code that would track only (wink, wink) customers that were using wireless tethering without paying for it. Once found, Steve has his IMac email all of them with a nice letter letting them know they will be billed if they don't stop. End of story. :D

Sorry, just had to add a little humor to this!

Yes you can.

If you apply the TBH hack (here) and use the 3.0 wireless tether apk (here) and fiddle with some settings, you should be able to get it to work on gingerbread. I've been able to tether on every GB leak so far, up to and including .595.

Instal the zip as u would by flashing it like a rom?
Th just Tweak and use the app?

In Wireless Tether...hit menu key->settings->Change Device Profile->Motorola Droid X (CDMA).

Yes, you install it like flashing a ROM. You will know that it's working when it starts scrolling NVM Update 1.... etc.

Doubt that, just for the reason that most people, if their account gets canceled, aren't going to pay that $300. But who knows.

His data was cancelled, not his account, I guess I did misread it :p

P3Droid P3Droid

So a buddy was tagged for tethering and his account tagged, told he owed 350 plus data cancelled. If u tethe

Any idea if the $350 was due to some fee Verizon charged him, or if they just billed him for... what, a year (give or take) of tethering?

--yeah, I know you're just going off a tweet so can't really say, but I figured I'd ask anyway

p.s. I checked out the guy's twitter, he seems to think it has something to do with going over 20gb. I would just stop tethering, but it seems like if you keep it below 20g/month they won't (yet) do anything. And again, this is still just one guy, so who knows for sure. Any one else hear any reports of someone getting tagged?

Who knows, but it looks like this is just the beginning of it........ Sooner rather than later they will probably bring down the "hammer".

I use it temporarily on trips for basic browsing... and my verizon data use stays below 3GB a month (usually alot less) since I use WIFI so much. If I'm using it for a day or two to remote into the office or something and don't go over 5GB total (phone + tethering) then I'm not going to sweat it...

However, I believe that Wireless Tethering is pro-rated, so you should be able to turn it on, use it for a few days/week, cancel it, and only pay for the time you use. Honestly, it seems pretty reasonable to me. Last time I checked (heck, might have been when I was on a different provider) this was the way it worked.
