Root wireless tether for root user. How do i get it to work?

I allowed my laptop to access the Droid when prompted by access control, but something was not right. It works fine without access control enabled.

ive allowed access to my laptop through the app but i only have local connectivity. I cannot access the web... anything?

Does the previous thread above help? Try disabling the access control feature and see if that works. You may want to use WEP instead to create secure connections.

Hey guys! I'm having the same issue as the original poster was. I have installed and set up the app as best I know how but other devices don't seem to be able to find the AndroidTether network. I don't have a wireless card on my PC but I do have a PS3 and 2 other wifi enabled phones and none of them seem to detect the tether as a hotspot. Any suggestions?

The devices you are trying to connect to the Droid have to support ad hoc connections.

Well I had wondered if that was the case but I figured if the hero would put out a ad-hoc then my wifes hero should see it. Is there a way to allow ad-hoc connections as an option on any of he devices I mentioned? Just curious.

So cool...just installed the wifi tether APK (from the Simply Stunning thread over at alldroid) over the Bugless Beauty ROM, and am posting this over wifi tether from my PC.

:D

Responsiveness is amazing...feels like I'm still on my home network.

Cant seem to find the wifi tether app, can I get a link friend.

Installed 2_0_5pre7 (I also tried 2_0_2) changed to 192.168.1.0 to fit in with my la. I get log message -
---
Configuring WiFi interface (Fw125r1c.bin from /system/etc/wifi)... failed
---
Then a series of messages all of which show 'done'
ending with
---
Tethering is now running
done
---
but I have no idea what the problem is.
My laptop(s) do not see the androidtether broadcast

suggestions?

I am on a mac, loaded up the app, started tethering by pressing the big green tether icon and .... nothing

When I go to my Airport Wireless setup on my Intel Duo Laptop, should I not see the "AndroidTether" listed as a way to connect? As I do not. I only see my local wireless router listed.

PDAnet works perfect.

thoughts?

Works fine for me.. I am using the wireless tether for root from the market.

And, as suggested, do not start a whole bunch of huge downloads while tethered, unless you like the idea of being caught..

My IT guy told me it was the "uploads" that would cause a red flag. If you think about it you can dowload a lot of stuff to your phone but it is really not convienent to upload large amounts of data from a phone. Say you were going to add a photo gallery to your photo sharing website and used the tether, you would most likely use your laptop and not your phone.

I am not really worried about being caught as I don't think I am doing anything wrong. "jailbreaking" has recently been upheld as legal.

If you relate it to wifi use, it is up to the provider and cell phone manufacturer block these applications. Once we own the phone we can modify it however we want.

Getting off-topic, but the legality of it would be yours/their interpretation of theft of service. We all pay for unlimited data, but tethering is not included in that (if I am reading the terms of service correctly.. legal jargon bleh)

I use same app.. are you just firing up your laptop, turning on the droid, hitting the big green tether button, then going to your laptop and search for TetherDroid in your Airport wireless options as a means to connect?

Yep. I click the airport icon and I see it scan for networks, then AndroidTether pops up. My laptop is the one just before the unibody macbook pros came out, so not sure if it changed on more recent models.

Also, all settings in the tether app are default at the moment, as well as in os/x

interesting, this exact set of steps does not work for me.

Hello Lads. I'm a metro costumer and i just acquire an android, got it flashed and rooted. however the tethering function does not send a signal strong enough so that i can use the android tether signal on my laptop. i do see the signal, can connect to it and get a computer confirmation of "internet Access" but when i load a web page i realize that there is no signal being provided...
Why might this be? is it because metro superslow network? or is it that i'm doing something wrong?

from my experience, if you turn on access control, you wont have internet access for whatever reason, did you happen to turn that on? if thats off, then maybe the problem is the network, how many bars of 3G do you have?

As far as I know, it's included in many custom roms. Don't know if it's available on the side, or as an add-on to any other rom. I'm on Bugless Beast 0.8 and it's available.
Anyone use this for a decent amount of time? Anyone get caught with high-dollar VZW bill charges? I just watched about 30 seconds of a youtube video on my computer while tethered to my phone. I think it said it dowloaded like 3 MB. I turned it off right away.

A few months ago I dumped my dsl internet, bought pda net, and never looked back. With root and wifi, its even better. I average watching 4 movies a week via netflix streaming going through the laptop hooked to the tv. With photos being uploaded to photobucket, web browsing, downloading apps, and now roms and kernels, both my wife and I exceed the "magical" 5 gb limited that so many persist in continuing to claim is a limit to the unlimited data plan. I have spoken to vz, and asked them about my data use, and the answer is always the same- unlimited data plan means unlimited.

That answer and the fact that the two of us well exceed the 5gb each month had led me to a point where I just don't worry about it
if you are, dial 611 from your phone, and ask customer service, and see what they say.

seriously? your streaming off netflix through your phone.....what kind of download spedds do you have, granted im on the edge of 3G coverage where I live, but damn...it takes me 20 minutes to download a 80 MB file

Okay guys. I am on BB 0.4 I installed wireless tether yesterday and I have read this thread over a few times.
I renamed the SSID, set a WEP key

When I turn the tether on, my laptop sees it appear in the available networks. I can log on and connect but it does not access the internet. I have turned AC off and AC on and neither setting seems to change anything.

Any additional ideas?

I am on an older Toshiba Portege laptop if that makes any difference.

SOLVED for mac.. turns out, it is not activated exactly as I would have assumed.

so, it made sense to me that when I turned on Wireless Tether on my Droid that I would just see it added to my Airport drop down list of possible networks to jump on. I never did.

In fact, to get it to work, you open your Network Preferences and highlight "Airport" in left column. Then, on right side, under "Network Name" you will see "Android Thether" in the drop down list. Select that and apply and then your Airport icon up in the menu bar will change to a grey icon with like a phone in it (it will no longer be the standard 4 airport signal bands)... viola

I know.. sorry, not a PC guy per se. But I saw I had posted here, forgot I had found the answer for mac people, so posted it here in case others find the thread and need it
