Help wireless tether working 2.1

Total noob here when it comes to stuff like this but do I need to be rooted? If so how can I find out how to do this? I have flashed a few windows mobile phones to other carriers so I I can follow instructions but need a bit of help.

kernel and app is here in zip file http://www.mediafire.com/?ikdvrm4ogiy

extract files, uninstall tethering app if installed and then flash kernel then install this tethering app.

credits for this app goes to LeshaK he created this app here. http://forum.samdroid.net/threads/610-Dev-Testing-WiFi-tether-for-i5700-Eclair-upd-19.04

Directions - Recovery Menu Flash Options
you need to first rename zImage.vampirefo1 to zImage to use this method.
boot into recovery
make sure to mount sdcard to /sdcard
put zImage into /sdcard/updates (recovery 2.1.3) or /sdcard/sdx/updates (recovery 3.0+)
flash using the flash options in the menu for kernel

Directions - flash_image
boot into recovery
make sure to mount sdcard to /sdcard
adb shell
flash_image boot /sdcard/zImage.vampirefo1

Rooting is successful I dont know what ABD shell is though.. i'm at that step

you shouldn't need to adb shell if you have recovery 3.0 rename the kernal to zImage put it on ur sdcard in the folder marked sdx/update.if the update folder is not there just create one.then put the apk on your sd card root into recovery run the updateflash using the flash options in the menu for kernel
, reboot use astro or root explorer find the apk install and your done.

Could you clarify this post? I'm confused a little by this post because its kind of jumbled.

This is what I gather so far (Not sure if its right):

- Download and rename the kernel to zImage
- Put it on my sdcard in the folder marked sdx/update
- Put the apk for the tether app on the root of my sdcard
- Boot into recovery and run the update flash using the flash options in the menu for kernel.
- Use astro to find the wireless tether apk and install it

Am I correct?

you got it.

Okay, when I rooted my phone it installed recovery version 2.2 or something like that. I installed 3.0 using the thing I downloaded from sprint, then transffered the zImage.vampire thing into the proper sdx folder and did it that way. BTW it works pretty damn good!

As I stated before, thanks for helping if you are in need of a google voice account or know someone that is I have an extra i'd be willing to share (since I dont use it anyways)

Hi all, I am trying to learn this stuff. Just not real quick at it. i know you get tired of explaining, but can you go 1 more time please?
I am running recovery 2.1 I do not have a file called updates, now what? and I downloaded the file but where do I get the apk file?
Thanks in advance

ok you need to download the zip file from above unzip it and inside there you will find the apk plus the kernal.

I put the file into the sdx file on my sd card, my sd card does not have an update catagory. I then installed the apk file with astro but it says the kernal does not have all necessary features for running this application. any idea there?
