Root Wireless Tethering issues!

mattj3636

Newbie
So i am trying to use wireless tethering for the first time since i got the phone. I am rooted with unrevoked 3, currently running CM7 nightly 32, stock kernel. recently updated PRL and Profile (idk if that matters).

i havnt messed with any settings in the wireless tether app besides for i turned on: enable wifi encryption and my own passphrase. everything else is untouched.

when i click "start tethering"

it says "Tethering started with errors! Check show logs" (the signal picture is grey, not green, but tethering is technically on it says.

so i go and check show logs... and the following failed:

activating wifi interface...
setting ad-hoc mode...
setting essid...
setting channel...
activating encryption (iwconfig)...

everything else is "done"

anyone have any input on what i should do to get it working?!

Do a full wipe and reflash. Are you using TB to restore apps? If so, sync your apps w/ Appbrain and restore your apps individually using Appbrain. I had the exact same issue using Kings GB Rom, last night as a matter of fact, and used TB to restore apps only (not apps + data). I noticed when I did a full wipe and reflashed the ROM, the portable hotspot would work, then right after I restored my apps using TB, it would start up w/ an error. So finally I did a full wipe and reflashed the ROM and restored my apps one by one using Appbrain and voila, my hotspot is fully functional. Give that a try and let us know how it goes.

so a full wipe and a reflash of cm7 means i would have to completely redo my set up, correct? :( :(

i know itll only take me like, 15-20 minutes to set it up how it is now but such a pain! haha... and if im doing that, should i try kings out?? i just read a bunch on it and it sounds like people prefer it over cm7... im not HUGE on performance, i prefer my own custom sweet setup and customizations over performance, but it obv has to be quick and responsive and you know, fast haha...

and iv gotten pretty used to the ADWlauncher that comes with cm7 so im not sure how using launcherpro will be.

is that a yes to my question tho, complete wipe and then a reflash means i have to start completely over?

and is kings the way to go?

Yes, when you do a full wipe and reflash, you have to redo your setup. Kings is just my preference, you don't have to flash it, I'm just telling you my experience w/ dealing w/ the same exact errors you are.

no no i know, but im asking if i should stick with cm7 or if kings is the same if not better..

I haven't flashed CM7, but from what I've heard is there are more bugs in CM7 than in Kings GB. Everything is working for me at this point...It doesn't hurt to give it a try, if you don't like it, you can always flash back to CM7.

Have you tried using the native tethering function built into CM7? It is found under the wireless settings in the ROM. Aside from that, I know quite a few people have had problems using the wireless tether app with any GB ROM. I am running CM7, but I only use wired tethering so I haven't had any problems.

I dont know if its the rom or the app. Maybe uninstall the app and re-download it. I never used the encryption option. You can have encryption turned off but still turn on access control if you want to choose who hooks up to your wifi. Also check the settings in the menu of the app and select a ringtone so you know when someone is tethering off of your phone.

thanks for al the input guys, i know for sure im gonna do a complete wipe of my phone/caches/data and most likely my sd card to clean that up too (save what i want of course) and just start completely brand new...

its just a matter of deciding which ROM. definately an AOSP w a sense nand for my updates

how do you run wired tethering on cm7??

I generally use the wired tether app, but you can also use the built in wired tether by going to settings, wireless, tethering, and selecting usb tethering. Of course you must be connected to your computer to do this.
