Root Wireless Tethering....

I have a question. I am going to download a wireless tethering app and wanted to know everyones opinion on the best one available. What are the advantages between certain ones and disadvantages. Also I am reading something about Kernel issues with wireless tether. Is that a big issue. I am running the latest kernel.

Just some opinions from fellow tetherers would be nice. Already looked through the market and seen a handful of them, just would like some input as to which one works best and why, thanks for all the insight...:D
 
I like "Barnacle Wifi Tether". It seems to keep a steady fast connection. I was having issues with the app "Wireless Tether" constantly dropping the connection.

I had more troubles using Barnacle then Wireless Tether, plus Wireless Tether now working similar to Verizon's hot spot, which supports more devices.

But, you could try booth, there are not that many free wifi tethering apps :)

Is the 3g hotspot hack the same thing as tethering? If so where might I find that..

Yes. Ultimately it is the same thing. Tethering is simply a method that allows you to use your phone's data plan with another device - "piggybacking" that device on your phone's plan.

That 3G Hotspot hack is simply to cycle the antennas off/on after you start the regular Verizon 3G Hotspot. This breaks the initial connection the app makes, and forces it to reconnect. When the app reconnects, it does so through the regular data plan which means Verizon won't charge you for the service.

There are several method that you can use to turn the antenna off/on. Personally I have tasker and created a task that did all this automatically. But now that the new Wireless Tether app supports other connections other than Ad Hoc, I've switched to that program.

I just downloaded the new Wireless Tehter and it says that my kernel is not compatible and some services may be interrupted. Something to that extent. At work messing around with it right now and really don't have a ton of time. Will it still work? Tried Barnacle and didnt receive that message.....
 
I am using Wireless Tethering with no problems. Kids IPads connect right through my X fine. I did get a similar error message when I installed and ran Wireless Tethering, here is the message I got:

No Access Control!

Sorry, but your kernel does not have all necessary features for the Access Control feature of this application. Access Control will be disabled.


But mine has worked flawlessly, with no problems!

NOTE: When I installed Wireless Tethering, I had just rooted my phone and was still on my stock ROM, if that had anything to do with it. I am on DarkSlide 4.2 now.
 
Yeah - the error is specifically regarding the Access Control function of the program. This doesn't effect the basic function of the program. If I understand the function of access control, it is designed to only allow certain devices to connect.

If you use WPA encryption and use a strong password, then access control isn't even needed IMHO.
