Worth The Upgrade?

Hi guys,

I've been mulling it over since the N7 2013 was released here in the UK and still can't decide - - is the 2013 model worth upgrading to from the 2012 model? I reckon I could fetch

I'm tight as a gnat's tuchus so for me: no way

You may not agree, of course :D

I'd say, if you feel that the 2012 version has an unusably poor screen and is insufferably slow, then hey: totally worth it. If the 2012 version is actually still pretty reasonable, then maybe hang on to the cash until they release the 2014 version ;)

I would say no. I still use my 2012 when its more convenient, and can't say its a huge difference. Yes it's a little bit faster and yes the screen is better, but the original N7 is still a great tablet.

Whether it's worth it depends on what you want out of it.

For me, while it's still a luxury/convenience item, it's probably my most used piece of computing equipment in the house. Additionally, I'm a photographer, so the much improved screen was huge for me - it's not just higher resolution, the color reproduction is a LOT better than the 2012 model. So the upgrade was good in my book - it's a better way to share my photos and consume others' photos. It's also substantially faster.

If you're happy with the current tablet, though, there's nothing earth shattering about the new one - it's just a better piece of hardware in every way.

I have a 2012 Nexus 7 and I decided to upgrade to a 2013. I ordered one direct from Google but I am returning it for a refund. I find the new screen is nowhere near as easy to use as my current one. If I type on it I find half of the letters missing. If I type the same on my old one it is all there. Certainly not worth the

I am completely happy that I upgraded. I loved my Nexus 7 2012, amazing tablet. But don't you know, right around it's 1st birthday, it started doing some weird things, like I would click on the play store, and it wouldn't work, or it would give me an error code whenever I tried to use the keyboard, telling me the keyboard isn't responding.

After hearing about the New Nexus 7, and all of the improvements, I decided to buy the Nexus 7 2013, and sell my Nexus 7 2012 (after doing a factory restore). I haven't been sorry I made the move at all. The screen on the Nexus 2013 is insanely great, the sound is improved 100%, whereas sometimes I actually have to turn down the sound ! Just an amazing tablet for $279 (I got ther 32GB).

Thanks for your replies.

I'm thinking to leave this one and wait for next years. Can't help but think they're getting into this whole 'hardly anythings changed' thing with upgrades which is what bugs me with Apple...

Well there's the upgrade of the screen from 720p to 1080p. That's a bit more dramatic than adding a fingerprint sensor.

Haha yeah I know! Not convinced by that at all - - another iPhone that has failed to innovate (I may swallow my words if this scanner actually takes off) but I can't see that it will. . . It's starting to tread in serious parts now - - not sure how much I'd want my fingerprint required for my phone.. There's also the
'send a text for me' that you say to your mate whilst driving - - - only they can't get into the phone...but I digress..

My point was that as much as they need to release things and get things out for money and business, I'm more of the thought that it would have been great to wait another 6/7 months and come out with an absolute barn-storming Nexus. Not dissing the new one, but they haven't given people with a 2012 model that much incentive to upgrade.

Yearly upgrades are not intended to be huge leaps, and actually provide a far better and more manageable development cycle. Nobody is pressuring you to buy the new one - they're keeping the tablet fresh and competitive. In another 6 months, Apple will have already announced a new iPad and suddenly everyone would be looking at the 2012 N7 as uncompetitive. Not to mention, it can be a good thing to be able to rely on a yearly upgrade - no guessing games about "do I buy a tablet when I don't know when it'll be superseded?"

Most people don't need a yearly upgrade, so skip a generation and get the 2014 N7.

Improvements are:
Faster
Better display
Thinner and narrower so fits better in hand
Rear camera
And for me, bought LTE version

YMMV but for me, well worth it.

One big advantage of the new LTE enabled version is that it works on Verizon if that's something you're interested in. But everyone's opinion will vary based on buying a data enabled tablet or just using hotspot on a wifi version.
