Root Would rooting the Droid Incredible help with the overheating / reboot cycle issue?

My DINC is going through the power cycle issue and it is a month out of warranty. I can't upgrade yet but my phone is essentially cripple due to not being able to use GPS or even the internet for moderate periods of time.

Would rooting the phone be able to adjust some settings somehow to fix this or at least alleviate it for a little?

possibly, changing kernels and underclocking the phone *may* help. But might be easier/more effective to externally cool the phone with other methods if it only happens during gps usage.

have you tried other batteries?

the overheating during internet use may be helped with a proper rom/kernel combination.

Well it turns off when things are taking up a lot of processing power whether it be from browsing, GPS, or games...

I have tried a new battery, the official $39.99 one, and no change.

well if you are out of warranty and don't mind tinkering with things (and can handle some frustration), you might as well root.

Any kernels/roms you'd recommend?

I kind of liked the look of Sense..

since you are having performance issues, I'd recommend starting with CM7. Check out the guide in the root sticky on how to install cm7.

But, if that seems a little too overwhelming to install, you might want to start with the roms's by medion, and install chad's incredikernel.

I'd also highly recommend getting comfortable with the options in clockwork recovery after rooting. Don't panic if your phone doesn't boot after installing a rom.

I was just about to post the same thing. Can't imagine anything lighter than Cyanogen.

When I first rooted I tried numerous Sense ROMs cos I wanted to give Sense a fair shake. I never posted anything on the forum regarding any issues, but interestingly I, too, felt like my phone was getting too hot and was having some bootloop problems (before and after rooting and romming). After flashing cyanogenmod, those issues went away.

Thank you for referring to my newly created guide. Most appreciated.

Yep, wiped the cache and everything. I'm thinking it may be an issue with the ROM I downloaded, since I believe it's still pretty intensive. Synergy rom. I liked it due to the similarities to Sense but that may be my downfall...

I downloaded SetCPU though and am underclocking.

Have you wiped everything and loaded CM7 too? Rooting alone won't change anything.

Well, you could check out the new stock GB rom at XDA. It's fast, Sense, and as stable as you can get since it has the new kernel.
