Would this work? building computer

I would not go for OEM version of windows.. you can install it on a computer once and thats it. You can't ever decide "well let me upgrade this computer to windows 8 and switch my old computer to windows 7 with the OEM copy I got a while back!"

Aside from that, I have nothing against 6850, just wanted to mention something to think about for the future.

SSD = solid state drive.

I would skip over that for your first build.

SSD's are basically like turbo charged hdd's. They can read/write a lot faster the problem is, when reading/writing small files they move about the same speed.

They are also pretty expensive. For the price of one 60 gig ssd, you could buy another terabyte HDD.

They unlike HDD do not have moving parts inside, its all electronic, therefore they are capable of much higher speeds.

Still not exactly "worth it" at the moment for most people. Even in high end builds a lot of people will spend over a thousand or more and leave out SSD's..

Thank you for the info =]

Ahhh i see so then OEM will only work on 1 comp. Any good deals on windows 7 anywhere?

Yea for sure for the future ill look into changing graphics card.

Ty for the SSD explanation did some research an they just dont see like something i need at the moment but for sure i will get one later.

With Black Friday and Cyber Monday approaching, I would keep an eye out for Newegg and other major electronics retailers.

i've never had a prob with oem. ssd can give you an edge in gaming is the only reason i mentioned it....guess it depends on how competitive you are.

newegg.com and zipzoomfly.com are on the top of my list as far as sites to order from. chiefvalue.com is another...never ordered from them but if i remember right they're tied to newegg somehow.

The PSU is handling all of this perfectly fine. no brownouts or anything like that at all. The RAM I should have researched better, but it all still works, so....

I have added things here and there - started out with dual 19" CRTs then replaced with the dual LCDs. Started out with just a DVD burner, now have that *plus* the Blu-Ray burner. Started out with the dual 500 GB drives and a 250 WD, now have the SSD for my OS (system) Drive. Started out with no webcam, then added the Lifecam Cinema, now have the Studio....

With me, it is always a work in progress. I usually rename the beast after it gets a major overhaul (i.e. new proc + mobo).

glocks advice has been spot-on throughout the thread, knows this stuff well. I know it well enough when I am seriously researching for upgrades, and then stop worrying about it until it is time again.

I *do* have an Intel Core i7 965 EE sitting here that has no home b/c I cannot afford the upgrades needed (mobo + RAM + PSU minimum to make it work - and I don't want to hold back on RAM this time, min 6 GB, wanting 12 just to start out)....By the time it finds a home the 90X will prolly be 2 gens old :P

maaan im jealous i wish i had an i7 laying around :/ just a 920 would do lol

that psu should be good enough for new hardware(not sure what the amps look like though)....ddr3 has dropped in price...your biggest issue is the mobo. damn decent i7 mobo's are spendy.

i wish i would have gone with the q6600 i probably would have skipped this last upgrade. chip is a beast. but you could probably cover your cost of mobo, ram, and even psu if u really wanted. buy a dirt cheap case, psu, and whatever else you are replacing and make a rig out of it. then craigslist the bad boy lol thats what i did....covered most of my upgrade cost.

i'm still glad im broke this holiday season don't have to stress about these deals lol. ill do the same though and post anything i see that comes up in this thread....

oh yeah and that damn gothic girls link had me distracted otherwise i would have posted earlier rofl

Is windows 7 ulti going to make a big diff in gaming comp over home?

Checking out the black friday deals on newegg, you think cyber monday will be anybetter?

for single card or even not high end xfire that psu should be pretty solid.

no theres not gonna be a dif as far as gaming. if you need the networking go with pro otherwise home premium is fine.

I would, but I plan on turning this beast into a workbench test rig for amping up the repair side of things. The PSU is coming close for the new HD - my biggest concern right no is that I have had to rig power for the 3 GAs from molex feeds lol. And yeah, DDR3 has come down, but yeah, I've only been looking at the better X58 mobos out there, and I keep swinging back and forth, back and forth. eVGA is a bit pricier than others in terms of # features / price, but my current 780i is flawlessly performing, so that goes a long way to dictating what I want to get.

I also may try to sell the 965 now for a reasonable price and build a Hexacore machine later on, when SATA 3rd gen and USB 3rd gen have become a bit more mainstream. Not sure yet. I'm pretty broke myself, which is why I bought that CPU 8 months ago (with my tax return refund) and haven't done a thing with it since...

Oh, and glad you liked the pics. Someday I am going to run a batch-convert on several hundred more images to put up in the gallery....

@Sainix, CyberMonday may be better deals or they may not be. I am a NewEgg subscriber, and they are sending us a 'special' email Friday morning, so I'll try to pass along the info when I get it.

Ok just wanted to make sure ulti 64 wasnt going to like make a big diff,

Keep posting any deals you guys see for any good brands dont want to miss them ha.

thank you guys for all the help!:D

i dont remember any boards having wiring that turns in to usb 3...the limited usb 3's are on the mobo itself

Wait so the usb 3's on the mobo would be found on the back of the comp on the i/o correct??

i saw a few cases with usb 3.0 on the front and thats why i thought like getting a mobo with usb 3.0 i would want a case with one.

if a case has a usb 3.0 would u even use the front one or just the one on the mobo? how would the case one hook up to use if u can?

im sure some of the higher end boards have usb3 pins. but most of the motherboards you'll see have 2 usb3's which yeah do end up on the back of the computer. i wouldn't worry too much about the case having usb3 or not. i dont even know of any usb3 mainstream devices...that i can think off of the top of my head anyways.

imo it would be more important to me to have a solid case.

i generally only look at antec and lian li cases unless i have a good reason not to(sometimes other companies make a niche case or by mistake make a nice one)

oh yeah and i saw this also...if you plan on going xfire later on or just want a psu that should last you through an upgrade and didnt buy that other one i would highly recommend this one if you can afford to spend the extra.

Newegg.com - SeaSonic X750 Gold 750W ATX12V V2.3/EPS 12V V2.91 SLI Ready 80 PLUS GOLD Certified Modular Active PFC Power Supply

you dont need that much power but it will give you head room. psu's only use the watts as they need. so a 1000w psu will pull the same as a 600w psu if thats all it needs to pull. example i have a 550w psu and i only pull like 240w. the difference is some are more efficient than others.

and everybody always look at how many watts the psu will put out...the truth is watts mean f all if they dont have the amps to back it up and deliver the power cleanly. not gonna get too far into it but theres a reason i only stick with certain brands. like i said before the psu is one of the most important components in the puter if not the most important.

the 650 you were looking at earlier

I like my case.

Just my opinion on that though. The door on it also doesn't hold very tight, but it's nothing a little magnet on the other side of the indent can't fix.

If it's a quality PSU then yes. The trouble is that many don't deliver the rated power under all circumstances. For that reason I'd strongly suggest buying the likes of Corsair, Antec, Enermax etc. The entire system depends on the PSU, so any weakness here can have fatal consequences down the line. Like motherboards, good power regulation in PSUs isn't glamourous but it ensures reliability.

100% agreed. I've built quite a few computers in my time, and PSUs are probably the single biggest source of failures that I've seen. If you have unexplained crashes or stability problems and are blaming the drivers or Windows, there's a good chance your PSU isn't putting out enough power. Another problem with PSUs is that when they die, they can fry other components as well. I saw one of my computers come back with every component that was directly hooked up to the PSU nuked. Only the processor, dial up modem card, and sound card survived.

I like that look its kinda like monster energy my lil gaming area has a giant monster energy banner would look tight to have green led in the case

what do you guys think about

vs

for gaming such as wow and rts and all that.

i just keep seeing so many deals for that x6 but if the end result in gaming is going to be better with the x4 ill grab it over it for sure.

is micro atx mother board not as good for gaming as a atx?

At the cost of SSD how many games can you really store on one without paying for something insane? :/

It isn't about competitive its about practicality.

It may ease long load times but, for general purposes they are just as slow as regular hard drives for small files :/

some games are gonna be better for the 965 other for the x6. its gonna go back and forth. but tbh i would heavily lean towards the x6...it's an overall stronger chip. more and more games are becoming mutli core aware(beyond 2 cores).

as far as micro atx they're usually meant for smaller cases. you can use one if you want it's just usually you don't get as many features as you would on a regular atx.

thats why you put your main games on the ssd and the casual games on the hdd....and the newer ssd's with the fixed controller issues SCREAM...the crucial sata 6gb is actually pretty affordable. in terms of ssd's that is.
