Help WOW.. 5 hour battery life?!

spikeithard

Android Expert
OK so I have a 3-4 month old samsung galaxy s2 LTE. (unrooted)

all of a sudden starting friday out of the blue it stopped holding its charge well. just drained like mad. even my car charger could barely keep up with it. (was just maintaining charge and not really charging it up). the wall charger was working fine and charging in normal time still.

so last night I went to bed about 2 am with 100% charge. then around 6 am it beeped with the low battery warning and it showed 5%!

slept another few hours till 9 and when I checked it was obviously off.

what the heck is going on? all of a sudden starting in one day it cant hold charge. its only a few months old. Is it a battery problem, app problem, virus????

thanks

Go to Settings | About Phone | Battery Use. This should tell you what is draining the battery. Screen and Android OS are usually the biggies, but if you see an app that is up there you could look at uninstalling the app or changing its settings so that it plays nice.

My guess is that you have an app that is acting bad as 5 hrs on standby should be ~15-30% battery hit depending on what you have syncing.

Ironically, I just saw on my phone that the new Facebook app is kinda high on battery use since the update a few days ago:mad:. Also, think of any setting you may changed recently (sync, screen on when charging, sleep time, etc) as these would all have an impact on battery life.

Another thought is 4G, I have a 4G phone but it is not available where I am:(, so I have my phone set to 3G only. I have seen many 4G users report turning off 4G (using 3G only) when they do not need the high speed data in order to save battery.

Hope this helps, now I have to go figure out why facebook is chewing up my battery.

Most often a sudden change in resource drain/battery life can be traced to a newly installed or newly configured app or widget. I'd think about the most recent changes wrt that.

Perhaps a syncing app is not playing nice with another such app or widget, causing a sync loop. Check Facebook, email/Gmail, weather widgets, etc for autosync. Manually syncing on demand really can increase battery life. ;)

There could be some other cause, so I've moved your question out of the Android Lounge to the Skyrocket device forum for you and marked it "support."

ya under battery usage I have android OS 51%, android system 22% , cell standby 11%, display 8%, phone idle 7% ant antivirus 3%\

My phone is at 85% and cell standby is at only 6%, so it could be related to holding on to that 4G signal.

Also, let the phone get to 50% or so to look at the stats as they are based on battery usage from 100% charge. For me, I get up in the morning, unplug my phone, take a peak at Facebook, Amazon Free App of the Day, and Android Forums.:) If I immediately looked at my battery stats then, it would be disproportionately reflecting those three apps for battery use.

I think its the battery.. no way any app can drain it that fast.. in 5 hours thats like 20+ % an hour drainage on standby. nothing was running on my phone too (maps etc)

I didnt install anything in the last 2 weeks or so either. UGH!

I was looking at the stats you posted earlier, what was your total battery life at that point? Are you using a task killer?

edit: I am currently in two separate threads on battery life so if post something confusing or totally irrelevant, just slap me!!:D

i was using a task killer but heard it wasnt good for androids so I stopped lol

Yeah, when I looked back at your battery stats and saw Android OS and Android system eating 73% of your battery, that is a dead giveaway of a task killer. Let your phone run for a few days without the task killer and see how your battery life is.

If you want to understand why task killers are so bad just read this.

I hope this helps, have a nice day.:)

i never had the task killer on my phone. I think the battery is just messed. Ill have to find another one online.

this is something beyond an app sucking up my power. this is insane. I just had it off the charger at 35% and an hour later it was dead. hardly even turned it on during that time too.. new battery??

New battery sounds about right.

Also might want to looking into a battery manager like 2X Battery or Juice Defender that will turn off your data connection when the phone is locked. Saves quite a bit of battery.

ya new battery sounds about right.. this is WAY beyond juice defender healing lol

talked to Rogers today.. they said try a factory data reset and if that doesnt work then i can get it fixed for free or replaced with a new one for 35 bucks.. sigh

ok could someone who knows this stuff well please give me some guidance. Rogers told me to try a factory data reset and if that doesnt work then replace the battery/replace the phone...

I forget, when i do a reset, Ill lose all contacts and apps? or just apps?

I guess I should move all contacts and text messages to my SD right? how do I do that again?

thanks

once you complete your factory reset, do not install any apps.

run the phone for 12 hours with no apps and take note of your battery usage. If it has increased dramatically:

install 1 app every six hours, taking note of any excessive battery drain
you will find the culprit

if within the first 12 hours the phone still drains extremely fast then there is definitely a phone issue or battery issue. seek assistance with Rogers or Samsung directly.

I know with ATT many of us had no issues getting them to send out another battery free of charge.

I had the same problem but i solved it this way:

1. Disable animations, put automatic brightness or disable it.
2. Get juice defender ultimate, it's worth it.
This tutorial helped me

Can't post links but its utube.
3. Use the task manager to exit apps, sometimes apps don't close by themselves.

That's what i did and it works good so far, my phone lasts me the whole day with moderate usage, and the battery drains around 1 or 2% per hour.

thanks guys.. I just feel this is way beyond an app draining my battery or JD saving my phones life.. this is insane battery drainage like I have never seen before.. I can have it at 40-50%, head to the gym and then have to worry about it dying there on me by the time I get home. like I said, went to bed one night at 2 am last week at 100% and it woke me up at 6 am at 5% batt life. wow!

best way to factory reset it? going through menu/settings way?

despite our feelings the above test works..I am in the process of doing it myself.

I went back to stock, did the factory reset and I am coming up on 20 hours unplugged with no hardly any installed apps ... still have 26% battery left.

screen on time is 3 hours so I have been using the phone...

you can factory reset one of two ways, through the menu or through 3e recovery

to get into t3e recovery power off the phone, remove battery, put battery back in, hold volume up+down, the press the hold the power button (while continuing to hold vol up+down)

So. As I suspected in my case, I installed some games and turned my brightness back up

Result...5 her battery life.

It appears I was also having tower issues.

Hoping I have it all resolved now :)

Can you do that on the Skyrocket? I'd also like to completely turn off the mobile data network like I could on my HTC Desire, but I haven't found anything in a quick search that will do that.
