Wow, I mean really WOW

how is the battery life affected by installing all these things? (not rooting, I know battery life if anything improves on rooting). I mean fur the Gumbo and Set CPU or whatever?

I would definitely read through the entire 3 pages. But the first page is the set-up page.

That should take you through ROOT with Pre-Kitchen and Installation of Fresh 1.1

This is the Gumbo Kernel

[CDMA KERNEL ROM]Gumbo Kernel beta project + RAM hack - xda-developers

Then the Set CPU app is on the market.

Thanks! I am going to give this a try on Saturday, So I will let everyone know how it goes. I am going to go the way of auto rooting.

I followed Danokan and upgraded....and am loving it(Thanks Danokan!). However, one of these programs populates a clock over the existing interface and it must be pulled down out of view every time I wake up the phone. Is there a way to get rid of this???

This is the replacement lock-slide greek.

I think there are replacement styles... might check pre-kitchen.

Here is me using the dialer, keyboard and browser

*shrug*

I have no clue. You have the 1 in a million Hero it appears.

I have EVDO and 3G pretty regular and my STOCK phone was NEVER that quick.

As the saying goes.. if it ain't broke.. don't fix it.

As for me, as I said.. my phone was never that responsive, regardless of coverage.

If I were you, and had that phone, with that response, I would keep it as is.

:)

Jazz. I will let you know in another day or 2.

That is my next test :D

Ok. This isn't EXACTLY a perfect test on battery life.. but I will report anyways.

I have the 3500mAh battery. Before all of the upgrades I was using Task Panel to kill apps on a fairly regular basis (ya ya I know the controversy) and I was getting 40 hrs before the alarms starting going off to plug the charger in.

Wednesday I spent about 40 minutes with the phone connected to the CPU via usb to do all the upgrades so it would have been charging during that time.

I am running SetCPU ondemand: 528 Max, 160 Min

It has now been 40 hours and I have 49% battery left.

I can't tell you whether it was the Rooting, the Fresh, the Kernel, or the SetCPU, a combination, or all of them together.... but it is obvious to me.

My phone is now blazing fast and saving battery.

:D

***EDIT: DISREGARD THIS POST AS I SCREWED UP THE TIME CONSUMPTION ON THIS.

SEE POST BELOW.

danokan, does your hero get warm on the back running setcpe at 528? i run on 480 and havent noticed it, bu ti heard it does when you play with the phone for a long period of time at 528

It has only been 2 days mind you, but I have noticed no increase in temp.

That sig of yours is really disturbing.

Anyway, I tried the first part and had rooted my phone the other week, but I think I just might try the rest the OP mentioned.

TS out

I notice my phone gets very hot now too. It runs at 528. Is that good or bad? I just did all this about 4 hours ago and love the speed and wifi tether. I just am not sure if the heat is a good thing or not. Running Fresh 1.1, Gumbo, SetCPU at 528 max and 245 min with ondemand set.

Hey Guys I am trying to get the auto rooter to work but I keep getting "The sendkeys test has failed. This is only required if you are using the auto-rooter." when I click on the green question mark on kitchen.

Any idea what to do to fix this?

I have installed HTC Sync as well but can not get my phone to sync.
It is not showing as connected, I think they may have to do with each other?

if you run it for long period of time at 528, i noticed it gets hot. not sure of the side effects of that, but i set mine at the 480 setting.

What case do you have on your phone!!?
I love it!!

Looks awesome!

Thanks. Its just some cheap plastic cover I got at the mall haha. I got it for $7 when I got my screen protector. Was going to get a body glove case but I like this one alot. Makes the phone look a bit more polished IMO

The shiny look on the Hero is nice. My Phantom Skinz skin give my Hero a slick look. I had to peel off the front parts to make the Innocase fit better.

BTW, thanks for the Vimeo link. Nice vids.... :D

Sorry Guys. As noted in the above post on my battery consumption, I screwed up the time on it.

I was multi-tasking when I wrote it and wasn't paying attention.

Before doing all of my upgrades and using Task Panel regularly, with my 3500 mAh battery I was getting an average of 40 hours off charger.

5:00 a.m. Wednesday off the charger

Mid-Day Wednesday I have phone connected via usb to do all the upgrades. Phone would have been charging during this for about 30-45 minutes total.

Last night at 9:00 p.m. I am at 49% battery.

That is a grand total of 64 HOURS not 40 hours as I previously posted.

It is now 10:25 am.

Total off charger time 77.5 HOURS and I am now at 17%.

That ladies and gentlemen is nearly DOUBLE off-charger time.

Rooted
Fresh 1.1
Gumbo
SetCPU 528 Max / 160 Min

There have been some posts about battery heat running SetCPU.

I hope to do a battery heat test tomorrow and will let you know the results.

I was seriously down on my Sprint Hero. I've had it since the first day it was released, and while I grew to like the phone, the constant lag, be it keyboard, dialer, inability to answer a call due lag while multitasking, just frustrated the heck out of me.

I've been awaiting patiently, thinking perhaps the 2.1 release would resolve, but after reading these posts, decided to go ahead an root. Heck, with the pre-kitchen, a monkey could root their phone nowadays.

So, I'm up and running on a rooted phone, Fresh 1.1, gumbo custom kernel, and setcpu.

I FEEL LIKE I JUST BOUGHT A NEW PHONE!

Wow, that's all I can say. For me, this is what the phone should have been like all along. I was seriously regretting being "stuck" with this phone for the next 2 years. Now, I'm like a kid in a candy store. No exaggeration. I simply cannot believe the difference in performance, not to mention how sweet you can make the phone look with the themes, etc.

My advice, do it, you won't regret it.

WoW!! Got every thing done last night and it is like a new phone!
Apps open in not time. Like facebook, it use to take a sec or two for the app to load but not its done rite away!

Well worth doing!

Thanks to everyone for answering questions!
