WTH is this about "nonresponsive" screens?

I've noticed this on mine as well. While it's annoying, I don't think I'm going to do anything about it for now. I'm curious to hear what HTC says though. It seems there are enough people with this issue so HTC can't outright ignore it.

I just sat mine on a soft blanket and it was unresponsive. First time I noticed this but really, how many times will I use it like that.

I haven't noticed this/mine doesn't exhibit this problem.

I used styrofoam, the so called "worst-case scenario" (is that really anyone's worst nightmare?), and it still worked perfectly fine.

I haven't returned mine because like you I am dealing with it and I don't want to take a chance of getting a refurb with other problems like others have said. I've kept a screen protector on mine from the start so mine is flawless right now other than the screen response issue. Once they come clean about the issue and a fix then I will consider an exchange.

In case it helps -

I ordered mine from Verizon probably launch day or a few days after, got it maybe five days with the weekend later - I have no responsiveness issues on any surface I've tried (including pillows, a comforter, mouse pad, etc).

whenever i am on my couch laying down with it next to me (my fiance would HATE to read this haha) it suffers from this. I haven't noticed it anywhere else because Im not lazy enough to need to just poke at my phone. I pick it up and use it. Its no reason that would make me return this phone or go elsewhere for a smartphone. hopefully this issue does get fixed for those who it does/would bother though.

If it was just Styrofoam then I wouldn't care at all but it's also while in my Car holder. I never tried Styrofoam. If you are using yours for Navigation and don't have the car charger plugged in it is an issue worth fixing for the ones that have the issue. The guy making the video was the one hooked on the Styrofoam thing. The point is that it happens when you are not using two hands with the phone while it's unplugged.

Mine has this problem if I place it on a non-conductive surface (blanket, wooden table, car dock, etc) and ONLY touch the screen. As soon as I touch the side of the phone with my other hand it works fine.

If I plug the phone into the charger while in the car dock or plug the headphone jack into my stereo, it goes away. I keep it plugged in the charger in the car anyway since the phone is such a battery hog.

Not a big deal but it is real.

We got my wife's Incredible 4 weeks after mine and it still does the same thing but to a lesser extent.

Who cares? Mine works...how often down you guys type while your phone is on Styrofoam? lol

I have issues with mine if I lay it on the couch or car seat and try to use the touch screen without picking it up. Download a drawing app like Sketcher and test your screen while it's laying on something soft. Mine didn't pass...

Granted I agree it's not often and I can obviously just pick up the phone to "fix" this issue. It definitely seems to happen though, and in some cases can be a little irritating.

mine is having this issue when it's on soft surfaces, but i'm not sure I really use it on soft surfaces without holding it with my other fingers... I guess I'll wait for an OTA fix. I hope that since it's not grounding right, I won't be struck by lightning when using it outside.

ive never had this issue

Go to the marketplace, download "Multitouch Vis Test"
and put your phone on a couch or blanket. Or any soft surface.

I just notice mine has this problem. It hasn't effected me but when I start using a car-dock, I can see where this could be a BIG problem.

I also tried this today after reading it on Engadget. My phone is almost completely unresponsive when lying on my bed or on the couch cushions. A huge deal? No. But I was thinking about getting a car dock and if the problem also occurs there that would definitely be a problem.

By the way, I only received my Incredible from Verizon last week, so this is not something that has been corrected in more newly manufactured phones.

Same here, got mine on May 5th and no issues whatsoever with mine. Maybe a second batch hardware issue, I dunno.

Yep, mine has the same problem and I bought it on launch day.

Wasn't able to reproduce with the simple unlock screen test but the app definitely shows the issue. It's kind of silly the way it was tested in the video. MVT I can be touching the screen with one finger and have nothing lit up until I touch the sides of the phone.

Anyway, for me this isn't an issue because I never intend to get a car dock. It's probably easier to modify your car docks to provide a bit of grounding than to deal with endless unit replacements for what seems to be a design flaw.

Hmm, if I hadn't seen the video or read about the issue today, I wouldn't have known about it! My Incredible does the same thing, but I never experience this in my normal usage of the phone.

This is such BS. I mean, sure ... perhaps it doesn't register touch when it's sitting on styrofoam or other such surfaces but really ... MOST of the time ( read: **MOST** of the time ) you are holding the phone to use the touchscreen, ergo it's grounded and not an issue. Maybe it doesn't work all of the time on styrofoam or "soft" surfaces but ... seriously? I've read reviews about the car dock and such and, TBH, I've never used a car dock and WON'T use a car dock so it's a non-issue for me.

This is from all the iPhone fanboys who have to stash something negative against the DI because it's a sweeeeeeet piece of equipment.

Honestly ... is this **REALLY** an issue? Lemme go ahead and answer that: no.

Hey guys, is this was a grounding issue, why doesn't the screen become unresponsive when you have a case on the phone? Surely it can't be grounded through plastic or silicone. I'm surprised thqt nobody has brought this up sooner. It seems people just always need something to complain about.

Sent from my HTC Incredible using Tapatalk Pro.

So you're saying that everybody who uses a car dock is an apple fanboy? I love the phone and still think its the best phone out there. I came from a TP2 and I "was" a Windows Mobile fanboy... until Win Phone 7 was announced. Once I got used to Android I don't even miss explorer or total commander. The only reason I got into this thread was to point out that this problem was found days after the Inc was released by a forum member. The issue doesn't bother me that much because I use the charge cord "most" of the time. They make TSB's for cars all the time and most people don't even take there cars in for the problem because they don't experience the problem but the ones that do bring them in get the problem fixed. We are the few that have the problem and if and when they get a fix we will want to take advantage of it.

Extremely childish reply, thanks

Actually I love my Inc, and I hate anything from the forbidden fruit company, so defo not a fan boy.

necosino:

My phone is has the Sedio Innocase on it, and when i touch the case on the side with 1 finger and then try the screen in the drawing program once my phone in on a un-gounded surface, is responds but only just, if I then touch the volume -/+ which is not part of the case and part of the actual phone, screen works perfect, so in answer to your question yes the case grounds the phone but only just.

Try it for yourself.

Its not a HUGE deal, and people will get used to it, But if you ask me HTC need to own up to the design flaw, and work around fixing it, or maybe they have and new ones won't do it, OR like I said before, maybe it was a bad batch.

Either way it is real,

Ordered mine online from Verizon during the promotion and it came two days before official in-store release. Mine, so far, has no problems on any soft surfaces and works in a car carrier just fine.

I have, however, noticed some *slight* unresponsiveness when trying to unlock the phone on a flat surface using two fingers (one on each side of the clock in the banner). I say slight because only sometimes the phone won't unlock on the first swipe... almost like the banner didn't get dragged all the way to the bottom.
