Root www.unrevoked.com Went Live

i'm lost again lol. I found that modified usb driver so it connected. I run the reflash, it reboots my phone, it comes up and i choose the hboot and it briefly says nothing found and then the phone restarts. I know I'm doing something wrong and it has to do with the hboot files. what the heck do i do with them, the hboot folder is sitting on my desktop

In the unzipped downloaded folder there is an htm file. Open it. It has the hboot instructions. It starts out like this:

Windows HBOOT driver installation instructions

  • Download the unrEVOked modified USB driver and expand it somewhere you will remember.
  • Turn off your phone, then boot it into the HBOOT menu by holding power and volume down.
    • On EVO 4G, you will have to select HBOOT USB at that menu by pressing volume down four times, then power. Wait until the screen flashes through an

I installed the hboot thing ( go to hboot driver.htm once u unzip the file you download from urevoked3). Then I enabled usb debugging mode. I start the reflash.exe and it says 'pushing recovery image' but it never does anything after that. Still trying.

Okay. How do you do the hboot thing? Can you give me instructions which they left out? Thanks!

  • Connect the phone to your Windows machine with a USB cable and wait for the phone to say HBOOT USB PLUG on screen.
  • Open Device Manager.
    • Click Start, then right click on Computer, then click Properties, then click Device Manager.
  • Under Other devices, you should now see the Android 1.0 device, similar to the picture below.

Ok I've apparently already done part of this. I got to where it does "SD Checking"...it says no image or wrong file or something (it disappears quickly) and then the Unrevoked program on my pc says running pre something and 'waiting for reboot' as it restarts the phone. The phone restarts and it just stays 'waiting for reboot'

Where did I go wrong?

The phone should reboot into a mode where you can use the volume rocker to select 'hboot usb' or something like that. It's the 4th option. You then click the power button. The phone will reboot and the unrevoked3 program will say something like 'waiting for hboot to reconnect' or something similar. At that point I kept having it say failed to reconnect after the phone would restart. I did it a bunch of time though and eventually it just took and it finished. Hope that helps some.

Okay so I just took the dive and everything works. (Well all I needed was wifi tether) It all went good, Start to finish time was about 15-20 min. That was only because I had to install the latest OTA update.

btw: Im using a Macbook.

Just wanted to say that this worked for me as well. At least the wifi tethering, which is all I tried.

I wanted to also thank chris44gw for writing out the step by step instructions, which gave me the courage to get back the tethering I stupidly lost, when I did the OTA update.

I also got version 3 to work, took some time b/c I was having issues with it hanging. But finally done and I can wireless tether. Awesome job from the unrevoked team!

OK... I couldn't find a comprehensive guide for how to do this anywhere, so here's what I did to find great success. Running Windows 7 x64.

1) Downloaded and extracted Unrevoked3 file Reflash-bundle
2) Opened html file "hboot driver", clicked link at top to download drivers
3) Installed drivers as per instructions in html file
4) Disconnected phone from computer, restarted to normal operation
5) Enabled USB debugging (Settings-Applications-Development)
6) Plugged phone back into computer
7) Opened Reflash.exe and followed instructions
8) Profit?

Some of these steps are, I think, immediately intuitive to those with more experience developing for Android. Hope this saves somebody who was in my situation 30 minutes ago a little time :)

Does the root that's provided through Unrevoked3 impact the 4G connectivity on the Evo? I know that was an issue with other root methods.

Also, is there a way to safely revert back to a 'stock' build (i.e., non-root) in case there are unforeseen issues with Unrevoked3? Thanks, folks!

Unrevoked 3 is awesome! Wireless tether works again, I can take screenshots again, and battery life is improved by using overclock widget or setCPU... It's like having a new phone.

I just rooted my phone with this method. It was easy to do, and I downloaded the "Wireless Tether for Rooted Users" app from the market, and it works!

My 4G still works, and I haven't noticed any changes at all yet, other than being able to use apps that require superuser access. That's exactly what I wanted. Thanks unrevoked!

Hmm mine has been sitting on Flashing Recovery Image for a while. Any idea how long it suppose to stay on that?
