Help X10 2.1 Update - Issues/Problems

Hey guys!

I Did the Update to 2.1, but my camera just stop working!
Everything else is working just fine, but when I open any app that use the camera, appears a message "the camera is not available" or the app crashes (not responding) and I need to force closing it.

I think some s*** happens while updating, and the SEUS repair is not helping on it, someone know a way that i can 'format' it and re-install totally the Android 2.1?

since i updated my phone , Everytime i go into my messages, a notification shows that i have an unread message but when i click it it is not in my inbox it shows as blank, the notification shows up everytime i receive a message ,I dont know how to get rid of it, and i'm not using handcent .. just using the messages application that came with the phone

Hi Everyone

I'm a newbie when it comes to this sort of thing. I've jsut ipgraded today via SE PC Companian. I backed up my phone as i was told to on SE website. However, when i went to restore after the upgrade, first I was told that i had to insert my SD card, which I hadn't removed or touched during the process. I took the battery out, removed and replaced the SD card, then turned my phone on and tried to restore contacts again. I get to 96% complete then it freezes a bit before confirming it is complete

However, i still have no contacts. When i try to import contacts from memory card, selecting Phone contact, i get the message 'Could not read memory card ("no vCard file on memory card")

What does this mean please?

Thanks for your help.

hmmm my contacts have now appeared in my phone, BUT NOT the contacts that i backed up! I assume this is something to do with my phone automatically synching with SE, which I had disabled in 1.6? This would be OK if i had synched my contacts with SE recently, but this was done a few weeks ago when i first got the phone, and i've made many changes to contacts since then.

Hmmm not enjoying this update so far. would be grateful for anyone's help.

Hey, the problem I found on my side is that when playing music, the sound is "mono" so if a song has stereo tracks recorded, I am not hearing them! I tried two pairs of headphones so it is not the problem. Seems related with the 2.1 upgrade. Anyone had the same problem? Thanks!

Definitely not a 'feature' of 2.1 - I've been listening to music through speakers in the last few days and the sound is certainly stereo.

Now that you scared me (got to doubt my ears or brain), I connected to a PC and checked with an audio editing program (SoundForge - by Sony, who else? ;) ) with separate level meters for each channel. Ran the phone signal as audio input in 'Recording' mode: the signal moves very differently left from right. Just in case, I recorded a few bars and looked at the waveforms: stereo beyond any doubt!

So it must be something to do with your hardware, most probably the connectors: if it's mono with diffeent headphones, then the audio socket on the phone may be shorted inside. Before opening or sending for repair, I suggest you test it like I did - to make sure your own ears and brain aren't misleading you ;)

Best of luck!

those videos are done in a poorly lit environment to enhance the visibility of the screen

I stand by my remarks about the brightness it's no more than 60% of what 100% was on the 1.6 version and YES I can see a difference! and a lot of the time i like to use full brightness if i'm outside

What equipment did you use to measure the brightness, and under what test conditions? Are you saying we have to trust your eyes and subjective perception?

Have you at least held 2 phones next to each other, one with 1.6 and one with 2.1, both set at max brighhtness? Why didn't you take a photo of such comparison and show us the difference?

Sorry but referring to your memory of former brightness is insufficient eidence, not to mention that quoting specific %tages is outright misleading. (But with exact numbers in % you sound credible and gullible users jumped to attack SE for ruining their user experience).

Before anyone comes up with objective comparisons, i.e. measured in lab conditions - I suggest that whiners keep their subjective perceptions to themselves and stop influencing others negatively.

...never mind... OMG it was just my song that was screwed. Played it on my computer and I have the same problem haha. I didn't even think to try another song *facepalm. Songs are working fine.

You should've corrected your original post. Wasted time to test the system and write a response - then 3 pages down I saw you used a f#$k%d-up file and never tried with another. That was very scientific! :D

Ok, I don't regret the testing: now we all know that the X10 has a decent DSP and micro-amp and outputs quality audio signal (given a quality source file, of course). And the 2.1 update doesn't interfere with that capability.

I would like to retire this issue once and for all. The screen brightness overall in 2.1 is better than in 1.6 there I said it, marginally better in brightness and way better in colour. What I did was this, both my wife and I have X10, mine on 2.1 Nordic and hers still on 1.6. I went to Android Market screen (lots of whites) and compared them side by side. It was no contest 2.1 was a tad brighter and the whites were way whiter, in fact the whites in 1.6 looked like antique yellow in comparison. Both phones were set at their respective 100%. The wife and kids all agreed that my 2.1 screen colour and brightness was better. At work the next day I compared my 2.1 to two different friends 1.6 and asked about a dozen peoples opinions. They all said the 2.1 phone looked way better. I will concede that the lack of an auto feature sucks for some although mine has been set at 100% since day 1, battery be damned!

So on a final note: Unless you can repeat what I have done and get different results can we please consider the subject closed. Thank You.

Sorry, I should have read all the pages before responding to the previous poster. What you did was exactly what I insisted on: an objective comparison. Now we have one, and I hope no more arguments are brought forward based on past memories and subjective perceptions.

Thanks!

I didn't notice anyone having the same problem, wonder if someone could offer an explanation:

In the early days after the update Mediascape was functioning normally as a 'portal' to all content on the phone (and off the phone - online). In the Photo section it was a little laggy and inconsistent - but nonetheless finding and showing albums and all stored images.

More recently it completely stopped working: still opens, but stays empty and does not find any content to display?!?

The Gallery itself also shows empty and there's no option to 'open' (import or in any other way bring content into the app).

The content is still intact on the SD card and visible to file explorers and other apps. I found that Mediascape similarly doesn't find any Music, although - from a file explorer you can open any music file and Mediascape would play it. There is something wrong with the database structure or addressing/mapping used by this part of Android

I haven't deleted or changed anything since the update - apart from Moxier mail, which I don't believe could have affected Mediascape.

I can easily open any content with alternative 3rd party apps like Mixzing (for music, videos) and Corax (for images) - but only from a file explorer: these apps depend on the Mdeiascape data structures and don't find anything to browse. Only Just Pictures, apparently using its own data management, shows all the image content - structured in the original albums and folder tree as previously created by Gallery/Mediscape (which proves the structure is still there, only Mediascape cannot 'see' it). And many other apps (e.g. image editors like Photoshop and Foxy, or the Flickr uploader Upstream) depend on that structure and on Gallery - so now they are totally useless

Any clues? (apart from total reinstall, which I know as an asnwer, but keep as a last desperate resort that may - ormay not - fix the problem). Any other suggestions?

Update: Found the source of the problem and fixed it. I am using the app Autostarts to control what starts without asking me, when, and why. I have been too aggressive eliminating some processes and services from the hundreds that Android runs on booting and later on various events. Some of those blocked form autostarting were clearly related to Mediascape (and media in general) and enabling them solved all problems. Anyone experiencing blank Mediascape or Gallery screens (no content) should revise their autostart apps or taks killers.

Well I should post my problems. The upgrade went fine. I did the intiial setup and got my twitter, gmail and se sync credentials inputted. Started playing with teh phone...everything seemed okay. Messaging worked, dialer worked, internet worked.

Then i rooted and installed titanium backup. I did a restore of everything. At that point I started having problems. Can't load the messaging app anymore, nor my phonebook. Messaging just hangs, and phonebook has no contacts.

The SE sync complains that it cannot get an internet connection but i can surf fine. Entered creds a couple times...no good. So i can't text and i have no contacts even if i could. Decided to reflash and just selectively restore teh things that I don't want to build up again....just download the rest. Hope that works.

The only real problem I've had since I upgraded is that now Swype isn't working properly on my phone. When I load it as the default input method, it says that I'm using it on a different device than what it was originally on so it will have limited functionality. Any suggestions on what to do? I'm going to check the beta site but thought that I'd ask here first.

EDIT: I just reinstalled it and it's working now.

My only real problem is battery life. In the 2 hours since the update my battery dropped from 73% to 34%. My gf is complaining of the same issue, having dropped from 100% to 59% in less then 3 hours. WE have only been texting each other for the most part. We are both on Rogers

The re-flash and selective data restore did the trick. I would not recommend a full data restore from titanium if you were on 1.6... from my experience :)

Problems with android keyboard... will only suggest proper names from my phone list... for example, when I type "if" or "it", it will automatically change it to "Vi"... when I write "will", changes to "Williams". Can someone please help me with this? Thx.

Issues: Texting someone, using the built-in Messaging app, while people are texting you simultaneously may cause your current text to fail in sending.

Back with Android 1.6, my friends used to mass send texts to me cause they got used to pressing "reply" after every 4-5 words or sentences. I used to text at the same time I received their messages, and never failed in sending.

Now with Android 2.1, what will happen is if they are sending me something in waves and I try to reply, I'll get a lot of "message could not be sent"

Anyone else experiencing this problem too? =(

2 things I've noticed since the update that I don't like:

1) Everytime I toggle the GPS it pops up a window with the disclaimer:

"Data transmission charges may apply. Anonymous data will be collected when an application uses GPS" Agree / Decline.

This happens everytime I toggle it on. Sucks that it won't remember my choice.

2) Everytime I plug in the USB, up pops a window with 3 choices:

Connect your phone / Install PC Companion / Charge phone

I can't find a place to disable this. I prefer to use the mass storage toggle when I want to connect to a PC. I don't even know what it would do if I chose to install PC Companion as I deleted that crap from my SD card a long time ago. This might be why when I go to settings, the first item "Sony Ericsson" has a blank window if I choose it.

I ran into the contacts issue problem.
I had used Backup & Restore to make a backup so I thought B&R would restore my contacts. But it didn't, and when it did only some (several attempts, very very slow process).

I found out the solution is to restore from within contacts:
Phone-Contacts-Menu-Import Contacts-Memory Card.

The file is called PIMXXXXX.vcf where XXXX is the backup number, eg PIM00004.vcf.

Search your SD card first for the vcf file. it should be under sd/system/PIM
Hope this helps some of you guys with the contacts problem.

I don't know if this has been mentioned already but my LED notification light doesn't seem to work now for text messages. I'm using Handcent SMS and it was working fine before. I noticed that it was green for a contact that I had set to blue so I changed that for the contact's setting and since then, it hasn't lit up for a text message. Everything else works fine but this is a weird issue. It would be nice to get it working again. Maybe reinstalling Handcent SMS would work?

Im having a problem with my x10 after 2.1 update. When people call me the pictures that appear are really low rez and i have set them out from nice high quality pics. Anyone knows how to fix it ?

here is the deal, it took me a lot trial and error. The will only light up if the screen is black and you get an SMS. If you get an SMS with the screen on, the sound works, the vibrate works (if you set it up like this) and the notification shows in the notification bar. However if the screen is on the LED will not show. You can test this out by doing the notification test in the set up menu... tap the notification test and immediately push the screen lock button on top which blanks the screen. It will make the notification sound, vibrate and display the LED with the colour and vibration pattern you has set.

Also tested sending an sms from another phone when the screen is dark and locked. The LED works there as well. It just will not display if the screen is on.

Cheers

p.s. I tried reinstalling Handcent but it made no difference.

I didn't think that reinstalling it would change anything, I'll give this a go. Thanks!!

EDIT: Worked like a charm! Weird how they changed it so the LED does blink if the screen is on. The blink frequency of the notification has also changed too but at least, this has been worked out. Thanks again!

EDIT2: Upon receiving an actual text from someone while the screen was off, the LED didn't light up. Not sure what is going on.

my only trouyble is that i lost 3G while i'm at work :(
will call Rogers later on this week to see the change they did

Hi, I've done the update and am reasonably satisfied with it overall.

However after about a week of working, save the odd process crash, my messages are now totally munged.

I backed up my messages to SD card prior to the upgrade. There were quite a few because my gf is so super sweet. They restored fine, along with all my contacts and email etc.

Then this weekend, suddenly they all disappeared. It's worst when I use the default Messaging app, no new msg are stored and new texts coming in can't be read. Normally I use Handcent, which has kept the messages from the last few days. Even though it shows them in a thread, I have to re-enter the recipient because by the time it's open it seems to have forgotten who they're from.

To me it looks like the underlying messaging processes are crashing somewhere causing various functionality failures.

I'm loathed to go for a repair and reset everything again. I don't want to backup again, in case that loose my earlier backup. I'm really hoping the last week or so's texts are still there, just obscured by a temporary glitch. Am I hoping too much?

Any ideas welcomed

I am still on 1.6 but I use an app called SMS Backup and Restore. You back them up to the SD card and they can still be viewed in thread mode (so gf's sweet nothings will still be there!) you can also copy and paste parts of the text if you want to. But it does allow you to clear out all the messages currently in the phone memory.

I was having problems with both stock and handcent being a bit slow but once I backed up 3000plus messages to sd and then cleared all from the phone it's back to being fast again. So it might be worth a try. You can also name the back ups differently so that you don't have the worry of overwriting existing copies.

I Had this problem too, and I need to put all the images again... cuz the restore ain't working rigth... but if u load the images again, It'll show up just fine!

One weird thing I found is there seems to no way to exit the browser except to press the home key!
The old browser had an exit button...
