Root Xoom-Universal-Root

Apologies if this is a duplicate thread, but I'm feeling frazzled after spending literally hours and getting hardly anywhere trying to root my Xoom, and didn't have time left for more than a brief search here. I've managed to unlock the bootloader and install Clockwork recovery (but found, to my frustration, that it's erased every time I do a normal boot). I've had almost every problem in the book, including the computer suddenly refusing to copy the zip file to my SD card, thinking I'd "bricked" the device and only getting out of the loop by persevering for ages.

I've tried installing Xoom-Universal-Root.zip both using "adb sideload" and from the SD card when I finally managed to copy it there, but I persistently get the message "Cannot open Xoom-Universal-Root.zip: bad". I've got two copies of this and they're both completely different sizes, so I have no confidence that they are valid, especially as Windows refuses to open them (even if the contents are Android executables, surely I should still be able to read the file names inside?)

To make things worse, the only sources for this software seem to be littered with DOWNLOAD buttons that mainly point to malware - if these were designed specifically to frustrate the user, they could do no worse. My question is: does anyone know a reliable source (i.e. quote me a link) where I can get this file, and do they have any advice for verifying it?

Thanks in advance

Question superseded. I eventually managed (I think) to find a copy of this file that was valid, but it still didn't work on my Xoom. It appeared to install correctly but then, after rebooting, almost every app reported that root access was unavailable - although one "root checker" said that it was. So it seems that Xoom Universal Root did something, but didn't work properly. It seems that the SuperSU app is needed alongside root for full access - this persistently failed to install for me.

If anyone reading this is trying to get Kitkat onto their Xoom, my advice would be to follow the instructions on line, but omit two steps (1) Installing Xoom Universal Root and (2) Installing the initial TWRP recovery. I spent ages struggling with these two and eventually found that, in my case at least, neither was needed. When I installed TWRP BigPart recovery and omitted the first TWRP recovery listed, this worked fine and the rest of the procedure was straightforward. I gather that most custom ROMs (including the Omnirom that I installed) include root access anyway - so, as long as you can work within a recovery like CWRM and from fastboot, you don't actually need root to install.

I hope this is helpful to someone. If you're only trying to root your Xoom, try installing a custom ROM with this access built in. If you don't want to do that, then you need help from someone more expert than I am.
