I was having a hard time getting my Yahoo mail set up on the phone, but was eventually able to find some settings to get it to work. Now my only issue is that when I download my mail to the phone, it marks everything read on my Yahoo server. Is there a way to keep it from making the mail on the server as read until I actually read it (either on the phone or on the server)?

That's not the case. I disable 3G at home (verified disabled) and can get my mail from the yahoo app with no issues.
Ok, I'll give it a shot. Is there a way to disable 3G other than the setting to turn it off when wi-fi is on (I got the impression they were saying the Yahoo Mail ap overrode this).
I downloaded a widget called SMODA from the market to disable 3G - there are other apps, and methods, but this one works great for me. If I have 3G disabled, WiFi off and I open the Yahoo mail app it doesn't update with new mail, and I don't see the "Checking for mail..." notification at the bottom. All as I would expect if there were no connection.
I use Data counter widget to monitor my wireless/data usage as well. I got the 2GB plan in the beginning because I wasn't sure how much data I would use. I've dropped to the 200MB plan because I don't use more than 100MB a month 3G.
Try the widget I suggested and see if it works for you.
Another test... Angry Birds - Seasons requires a constant data connection (3G or Wifi).
When I disable 3G with that widget, I cannot play the game.I was able to downlad the ap, but then removed it when I saw what I thought someone saying that it required 3G.
The official Yahoo mail app in the market says "Samsumg Galaxy devices are currently not supported."
I may download it just to give it a shot.
**EDIT** I just installed it and turned off my 3G using Quick Settings. Tried it out with wifi and it seems to have worked without problem.

The yahoo mail app is a piece of crap. It crashes constantly on my Captivate and runs slow as molasses. I was able to set it up via IMAP which is a lot faster but the issue is that it only works over 3G. IMAP doesn't work over WIFI.
To be more accurate, it is a "piece of crap" on your phone.
I've had no issues with it on my Captivate. It never crashes, and runs as fast as any other mail app I have used.

Anyone dissatisfied with the performance/behavior of the official Yahoo Mail app would be advised to give K-9 a try. It's an enhanced, well-maintained and free app based upon the stock email client but much, much better... with more features and lots of bug fixes. IMAP support in it is great.

Really? You should try IMAP, there is no way it can run as fast as the mail application. I'm running stock JH7 firmware. If you read the reviews, you'll find lots of other people having problems with it. My inbox has a lot of messages and I have a lot of folders, I'm not sure it was built to handle that.
Sure, it's easy to use. Unfortunately, it doesn't provide access to the folders I've set up to store mail and so I have to log in to YMail or GMail anyway to move them.

That's peculiar. Yahoo doesn't provide IMAP access to your existing folders? Or were you setting it up for POP and not IMAP access (which would explain no folders)?
Um... Not to confuse the issue more than I already think I have, but that would be K-9 which doesn't (seem to) provide access to folders already set up in Yahoo or Gmail.
Now, I may have set it up wrong...

Well, let's clarify:
Yahoo is the email provider. Their primary interface is their web interface.
An email provider can also provide external access to their email services. Standard methods are POP and IMAP.
POP is the most commonly-used but the dumbest. All it does is flat fetch all pending emails. Only suitable for bulk downloading of all pending emails, and to only one client. Doesn't support folders as email is transferred to the local client which is then expected to handle folders locally. This does not mesh well with simultaneous use of the web interface, which would count as shared use by another "client".
IMAP access is the higher-tech method, where all mail remains stored on the email provider's (Yahoo's) mail servers. Multiple folders are supported, as well as concurrent access by multiple clients as all mail and organization remains on the server. "Push" notification is also possible.
The K-9 email client has support for both POP and IMAP. I personally use it with IMAP as I also check my email with the web interface for my email providers, as well as Mozilla Thunderbird on several different PCs.
I left Yahoo mail many years ago, but according to Wikipedia they offer IMAP now even with the free accounts:

I have grouped some of my cotacts in Yahoo. When I compose an email or forward and email from the phone, I am unable to address it to my groups. Yahoo app in the phone, doesn't recognize my contact groups. It only recognizes individual contacts. Does any one have a solution?

Gmail groups aren't automatically carried over, so that Google contacts can be organized into their own "Google" group to distinguish them from local contacts, Facebook contacts, other contact that might be synced, etc.
Likely Yahoo is the same way.

yeah if you think the yahoo mail app is great and fast, then you obviously haven't set up IMAP correctly. Yahoo mail doesn't just not work on my phone, but it doesn't work on many other ppl's phones as well. Just read the reviews on the app and you'll know what a POS it is. Yahoo has very bad Android programmers...
