Root Yep, gingerbread.

Yep, I'm looking forward to this, too. It'll be interesting to see how fast the brilliant guys at the Hero forums get a Cyanogen mod running on the Hero; once that happens, if it does, the Eris shouldn't be far behind.

I saw this earlier and my first thought was, "Wow, and I haven't even flashed a Froyo ROM yet."

I'm excited for this. I'm going to have my Eris for a little more than a year before I can upgrade, so this is great news for me.
 
So has anyone here downloaded it and flashed it? It's available for all who want to play!

Update: so I flashed it just to peak at it.. in early stages. Definitely not a ROM that is ready. But it was cool to see it.

When calls work and WiFi works, I'll try it. When the camera works, too, I'll use it as an everyday ROM.

(Ok, saying that, I just downloaded it. I'll try it out maybe tomorrow.)

Wow that was quick. I look forward to 2.3, but haven't seen any must have features.

That said Cyanogenmod has been coming up with some great stuff lately. The notification pull down widgets and lock screen shortcuts are getting hard to leave without.

To me, the biggest is text selection. If you can want to cut or copy some text being displayed, it's almost impossible to do so accurately without a trackball or pointing device, and even those are awkward. It looks like Gingerbread makes that much better and easier to do.

Ohh really nice, I saw you were able to do on Ipad. That would be a great tool.

Anyone know of any VW phones coming out with this in the near future.

That keyboard looks great, the spaces between the keys are nice!
 
is there any way to install it as a separate keyboard? I think I still want to stick with the stock celb keyboard for now.

Everything that I have seen so far replaces the stock keyboard. Maybe somebody will create a signed zip to reflash the stock Android 2.1 keyboard back?

Does this exist anywhere else? I don't have an account on XDA, and when I click on that link, it asks me to login. I guess I can sign up for an account, but didn't want to unless I could get the zip elsewhere. I just wanted to try it out since it looked interesting. I currently have a rooted Eris running xtrROM 4.6.

Just installed this. Works great. Also works with SlideIT which in turn makes that better as well.
 
I just gave it (KaosGingerbread V3) a spin.

Placing calls works (digit dialing), inbound audio (during call) works, but no outbound audio (microphone) or speakerphone, so - no go as a basic phone right now.

Other apps which would normally produce audio (e.g. Music) are mute.

3G Data network is working.

The native browser crashes due to lack of google extensions, but Opera Mini 5 will work. (You need to install it as an .apk, because there is no Market).

Camera app comes up (doesn't crash immediately), but there's no image.

No WiFi for me.

Some apps work partially - ES File Manager sort of works (e.g. browse and install .apk's from the UI), Better Terminal, ATM (arronla), Opera Mini 5, AK Notepad. I even tried Vlingo - it didn't crash, but it fails to capture microphone input.


Note that I'm not complaining - just letting people know what to expect out of V3.

I overflashed the googleshits on a lark, to see what would happen, with very little expectation that good results would come out of it, and it just stays in a bootloop. (I suppose that there are profound dependencies on "framework.jar" by the Google apps, so I really wasn't expecting it to work - and it doesn't)

ATM reported 104 Mb (RAM) free - that's an encouraging sign.

I'm glad we still have active devs on the Eris - it's unlikely that the Eris will have the long legs that the G1 does, but it's pretty cool that folks are working on a Gingerbread release for the Eris.

I tried it yesterday as well, and noticed the same things. It's also pretty slow to do the things that it does do. Very cool and extremely impressive nonetheless, considering that Kaos built this not from source but from pulling pieces from the SDK.

On a separate note, I tried the Gingerbread keyboard on CELB. Yuck. It's much slower to respond than the Froyo keyboard; I had to reflash to get the Froyo kb back.
 
really? it was very snappy for me, seemed like even quicker than the froyo keyboard. of course I only text with GV which can be sluggish, so.
