Root Yet another thinking of Rooting thread

Given this weeks fiasco with the GB release I am warming to the idea of rooting.

I am reasonably happy with the standard Froyo+Sense build but my main niggle has got to be the lack of memory, I also have got used to and like several of the standard HTC app/widgets (Namely Mail, News, People,Calendar).

So my question is what ROM would still give me the standard Apps but allow me a far greater amount of free memory running on 2.3.

Also do you have any suggestions as to alternative apps for these functions.
