Yesterday my sister recieved the Huawei Ascend, and I have to ask... What the hell? The Cancas launcher that it came with sucks, sadly. [Downloaded Launcher Pro, it was sweeeeeeeeeeeet. ]. But I mean, the phone is just weak. I tried a benchmarking test (In today's age, our form of benchmarking is just downloading and playing Angry Birds to see how well it runs). Is there any root available for it? And any version of Cyanogenmod that will work?

Huawei Ascend - Android Forums
I was just about to post about this. My younger sister also got a Huawei Ascend from the carrier cricket and my first thoughts are "what the hell".
I'm not here to ask for advice about rooting it but just to discuss why would a manufacturer even make this phone. Swype can't keep up with my swyping and the stock keyboard can't keep up with my texting. This reminds me of my first phone, a samsung flip phone which would let me type a whole word before it could catch up and render the text on the screen. The canvas launcher also is abysmal.
It's a shame that my sister has to get this phone simply because she doesn't have a steady enough income to get a contract, but if she keeps this phone for two years, she will have still paid out about the same amount as I. She could get a samsung focus, samsung captivate, or droid incredible free on a new contract for $70 - $80/month for two years. Instead she paid $160 for her ascend and is paying $55/month for extremely slow 3g and spotty coverage. Should I just tell her to return it and get a blackberry?
I think google needs to be a bit more aggressive about setting standards for applications they let into the market and for the processor and memory requirements of their phones. I don't think they should go apple on all developers and manufacturers but its an embarrassment that they remove malware from the market AFTER they infect people's phones, and that android is being loaded onto phones that simply cannot handle it. Google makes such good software, and yes, we as consumers should do research and buy better phones, but this is still bad for the "android" name. With phones out there like this, people will go around saying, "androids" are bad and laggy.

This phone is $99 on metropcs. You get what you pay for, if you don't like it, go be a slave to Sprint/Verizon/AT&T for a couple of years.
My thoughts exactly.
I did this weird thing called research before buying this phone.
I specifically bought it for its "defects". older os especially as rooting was three clicks away.
This is not a phone you want if what you care about is some pissed off avians and how well they run.
If you want to actually learn android it kicks booty. If you want a phone/social device/ toy it's equally awesome.
If you wabt to brag to your friends about what you learned abd how far you can push your phone past stock, awesome.
If you want to brag about processer speed, graphics rendering, value or p.i.t.a os.... Spend more than $100.
This phone does damn near anything you need.
Note I said need.
Wanna play games? drop the cash into an htc. If you want more than you paid for, buy an ascend.

I couldn't have said it better. It bugs the hell out of me that people buy the Ascend and then complain about how slow/buggy/laggy it is. It's simple: if you wanted more of a phone, spend more money! This is not rocket science; this is an immutable fact of life: you get what you pay for.

Or buying a Kia, and hoping it has a 600hp 12 cylinder under the hood... I mean seriously... Why would you assume that a 100 dollar phone it worth more than a 100 dollar phone? lol It doesn't make sense... If we ever get the 2.2 update, then sweet, it will make the phone a little better, but until then? We have a sub par phone, that does what it is intended to! Stop bitching! haha

Yeah but let me tell you something: This little hundred dollar phone can go a long way if you've got the right stuff put into it! I spent 80 dollars on this phone brand new and now I've had an offer from someone to buy it for 140. Thanks to Isaac and all the great app makers, This phone has a lot of potential. I wonder if Isaac will make a mod based off the official 2.2 when it comes out. If he does, I will be on that paddy wagon. You can have the fastest phone in the world but, Honestly with technology, There will always be something better coming. I think you should enjoy what you've got. Make the best of it. I'm one of those people who is thankful to have what I have, Each and everyday! ^^.

You will if your arse goes bankrupt and it's your choice between studio and the street. I feel sorry for the spoon fed people because they are the ones who are causing the outsourcing to other countries. It's us bottom feeders who make the most of what we have. In every major company there is a person who has innovation born of simple life lessons.It's okay, the Ascend is not for everyone. When you've lived in a mansion for so long, you're not going to be used to living in a studio apartment.

The phone is not even that bad. It just takes a little maintainance to keep it running smooth. If it is extremely laggy, that should tell you something is wrong. I bet 90% of the people here would say they got their moneys worth out of this phone. And you know what? Angry Birds isn't all that. (thats right I said it) People basing their phone purchases on some fad game is ridiculous to me. Will they still be playing Angry Birds in 2 years when their overpriced contract is up? I seriously doubt it.

I checked it out on my nieces ipod touch. It's ok, I just don't see what all the fuss is about. I don't really care about playing games on my phone anyway. I have a psp and a playstation for that. I have about 8 games that I downloaded on my phone, and they mostly just sit there taking up space.

Seriously,I'm not a pitchman for any product,but,I challenge any other manufacturer to offer a phone with the feature set of the ASCEND @ the same price.Also,I've dropped this phone hard at least twice(w/a rubber protective case) & have no ill effects resulting from the abuse.Definitely have got my moneys worth many times over.
