z4 root help

I am totally new to this and am really only looking for a way to turn my htc hero into a wifi hotspot. From what i read the only way to do this is to root your phone. I have the latest update/patch on my hero. i installed z4root and apparently there is a superuser icon now. now i am stuck...what do i do now to get this to be a wifi hotspot?? any help is appreciated!!!

Either flash a rom that has wireless tether in the rom OR download wireless tether/barnacle from the android market

any suggestions? also, i did a temp root. so does that mean whenever i reboot my phone it will be back to normal? i dont see any difference after the z4root was applied.

First, did you flash a recovery and make nandroid of your stock rom? If yes....

Nandroid
Download rom
Boot to recovery
Wipe data, wipe cache and wipe dalvik cache
Flash rom
Reboot phone

I did a backup with titanium backup then did all the wiping and flashing and installed the rom...phone started fresh and i am able to tether :) another feature i wanted is apps2sd...the notes said that this rom has it included, but i dont see it under apps. do i have to install it manually?

While it's clear that root is temporary, any actions made while rooted remain in effect correct? So if one rooted, removed Sprint bloatware then rebooted, the crud would be gone, Sense would be back, camera would work and phone would be bloatware free?

Correct, but root is not temporary, root is permanent unless you unroot

To be honest, I would go with an Android 2.2 based ROM in this day and age, for native Apps2SD support and the speed improvements alone. Liquid Sense 2.1 is good if you really want a Sense UI based ROM though and you can still easily update your Profile and PRL. ;)

I do not see the point in temporarily rooting. If you are going to tinker with your handset, you might as well go whole hog and permanently root it. :D

I have a Vibrant 3G and using z4root android app to root and gain su and remove bloatware. When you tap Permanent root it says accessing root and then white screen comes up and you expect it to reboot. But the problem is the white screen never goes away and after several minutes the phone goes to sleep. Everything else is normal and home screens and apps all still work - just NO rooting at all.
I have noticed that in the recovery screen that my version is 3e and have read that could be a problem. Any suggestions will be appreciated. :D

I believe that Z4Root only works on Android 2.1 and below. If your handset is running a newer version of Android, then the exploit that Z4Root uses has been patched.

You should look around and find the appropriate root solution for your specific handset. Z4Root is a fairly old root solution, so it most likely will not work.

OK, figures that it would be something like that. The good news is that i finally rooted and installed ICS 4.0.3 and wow what a difference. Just find it comical that T-Mob just refuses to understand how important gaining access to a newer OS is to the average user. Even the iphone zealots can get updated and that is not open source. Now just for frustration fun, I am trying to update an HTC Magic - yeehaw. Suggestions?
