Root Z4root

EVOid

Newbie
Could someone tell me the differences (if any) between rooting your phone with the "Z4root" app versus using other non-app ways.

Thanks.

Umm.. well z4root is an app (as you know). I think at one point it could do a full root, but then it could only do a temp root (maybe i've got that backwards).

I had an issue with a rom where I lost root for a bit, and i tried to use z4root to re-root me and it didn't do a damn thing. So maybe it was the app or my situation, I don't really know.

Z4Root only gives you temporary root rather than full root. It only roots your ROM and doesn't unlock nand-access (S-OFF), so you won't be able to create nandroid backups, etc...You also lose temp/soft root once you reboot. You *can* run root only apps w/ soft root, which is a plus, but full root is the way to go IMO. Hope this helps.

Thanks guys this is helpful.

So to get the real deal (i actually don't know what a nandroid is or does though?) I would have to uninstall the app, then do one of those "dos-like" roots of my phone?

If you want to learn about rooting and the terms such as nandroid, read the sticky in this forum ...rooting for dummies. You wont believe how much you'll learn. I had to read it a few times before I understood it all. Lol. Its great.

Yeah if you're still running 2.2 Froyo, it's incredibly easy to root. I used Unrevoked and followed the rooting for dummies guide. Read, read read.

Does z4root still work to provide temporary root?

I tried running it yesterday and the program ran for about 20 minutes before crashing.

Not sure if it works on Evo's w/ the GB update. It might be limited to phone's running Froyo.

I have 2.2. I had a friend do the root. He tried some unrevoked website but it didn't work so he put the Z4root on there for me and it works so far. I have rebooted the phone and still have the free wifi but a couple of things are off. For one, even though I set the cpu to the minimum when the screen is off, my battery is tanking wayyyy faster than it used to and im not tethering or anything like that on these days.

If I want to do the "full monty" root do I have to first uninstall this app and set my phone back to normal? I didn't see anything about that in the guide.

You should be gtg. Just download and install the hboot drivers, uninstall HTC Sync on your PC if it is installed, and run Unrevoked.

If you haven't already, check out ROOTING For Dummies + Extra's sticky; it'll have a play by play break down of the process.

I thought I read that it will. I have discovered what caused it to crash, apparently z4root doesn't like being landscape and as soon as you tilt your phone it crashes.

I'll try again in airplane mode on the charger and let it run as long as it likes and see what happens.

Keep us posted.

I let it run for probably 45 minutes with no progress, just kept saying "attempting to apply root"

Doesn't appear to work. I'll let it run all night tonight, but I have no hope of it working.

Welcome to AF!!! Did you accept the latest OTA from Sprint? Or are you still on Froyo?
