Zenithink ZT-180 1GHz 10" tablet

how can you tell what firmware the zenithink epad has running? also is it possible to update the firmware via a usb stick and bootloading it?
also i cannot get mine to pick up on pc, for updating the firmware, i don't know many people with xp and i run win7, most of my mates do or vista? any chance of a proper video guide or youtube channel setup of how to update and other features?
cheers.

for now just a bit of help updating it would be grand..

Well, I am going to sell mine. I just put it on Ebay.

It is a nice unit, but my iPad still does things better for right now. Rather than fight with Android, trying it to get what I want, I am going to sell it and come back to an Android tablet when things mature a little more.
I think this holiday season will be huge for Android tablets....

It's not surprising the iPad is more stable at this point based on the source and price... If you were just interested in the cheaper ePad for it's using Android and still wanted to play around that way you might want to search around as there are some folks who have ported Android to dual boot on an IPhone so that port should work on the iPad...

marimbaoid brought up something that I have been wondering, not being a video phile.
The Augen I bought my wife requires that the SDCARD be formatted for FAT32, I wanted to but a copy of GWTW on it for her and from bluray thats over 8GB, even after slimming it down it was still pretty heft and my one windows PC wouldnt allow me to copy it (file to large for partition type). MAMBA said that he went from 1080p to 720p and his size went UP? also how are you getting such large files on your SD cards. Sorry if this sounds like an ignorant question but I paid $100 for my TV 5 years ago because someone I knew needed the $

Unfortunately though u-boot has the ability to run update scripts I don't believe anyone has gotten as far as trying to get flash_image running yet to be able to load the new updated kernel and partitions... so we are still at the mercy of the 32bit windows burntool... this should work on Vista and Win7 32bit OS... the difficulty is that we only have the 32bit secbulk driver for it thus can't run it on 64bit versions of windows...

PS... in Menu -> About Device the build number includes a date in the eng.2010xxxx... which can point you to which version of firmware/kernel is loaded...

I just bought a e-pad Zenithink ZT-180a today, just getting started, also just found this on another board..

I am a ROM cook for the Apad iRobot, with contacts to Shenzhen. I also know how to read Chinese. This is how I uncovered the story.

In case you don't want to read 20 pages (which is filled with spam posts from scammers, by the way), here's the summary:

What happened
The Zenithink tablet was originally advertised as a 10" tablet with an A8 Cortex CPU. The A8 Cortex CPU would have allowed for Adobe Flash playback if the device was ever upgraded to Android 2.2. Previous CPU versions are not only incapable of using Adobe Flash, they are also 30-40% slower and less efficient overall. It was revealed that the CPU specification was in fact faked, and the CPU is the older and slower ARM11 variant.

What we have done here is uncovered faked specifications and an attempt to cover up the situation, both evidenced by the firmware implementation to artificially boost benchmark scores (which inherently leads to instability), and by the manufacturer's passive stance on the false specifications being spread.

What's the big deal
Online retailers were selling the device for as much as $300US, which would have been a fair price provided that the device had a real A8 Cortex CPU. However, since this is an ARM11 device, $300US is a rip off pricing. A good reference for a device with similar specifications is the Augen Gentouch, which is around $150, but with a 7" screen and warranty support. The device retails for the equivalent of $155US (1050RMB/Yuan) in China. Assuming $50 shipping, you should be paying no more than $200 for the device to be shipped.

taken from ZeniThink ZT-180 Specifications Faking, Not ARMv7 A8-Cortex!

other forums agree this is true but unit is still very good. only thing that concerns me is the statment adout adobe flash and the another quote from lattervin same artical "In addition to hardware quality control issues, the CPU has been suspected to be an ARM 11 variant, with the Android OS running with the highly unstable JIT Dalvik engine (stable only in Android 2.2).

This also means this device is NOT flash capable."

not sure what this means yet, but if you can not flash upgrade that will be big problem.

condex, that was a discussion point a few weeks back. there is a lot of reading on it if you go back via the threads.

There is actually Flash support. The GPU has flash acceleration via OpenVG. But Google or someone still has to write a driver/lib for it.

So is the speed of the processor 1 GHz?

Or after doing some hunting sone are saying the CPU is ARM 800MHz
Can anyone with one of these confirm this?

FAT32 is limited to 4gb per file. (The PS3 hard drive is too - sucks!) If I made the comment that I would try 8gb, I was mistaken...I remembered shortly after posting it that it can't be done beyond 4gb.

On the first android firmware I checked it to be closer to 950 than 1000.

There was a Chinese dude on the zenithink unofficial forums that was claiming the chip was supposed to be 800MHz only, and zenithink were just overclocking it. But he also said, that is what was making the unit so hot. We later found out that was related to the wifi tx.

I saw a recent post there about a new 1.2GHz and 512MB of RAM unit. So who knows what the truth is. In another post I found the exact CPU and the website, but the information was hidden from the consumer. It wouldn't even tell you it was a arm11 chip.

I got mine today. Interesting device...interesting to try to set up. I managed to get the firmware updated. I'm surprised nobody has done a better translation of Zenithink's illustrated word doc.

I also went ahead and rooted the device and the edit to improve the wifi. I haven't tried to get the market working yet...I've been able to cross-load most of the stuff I use.

So far, my biggest disappointment is with the screen sensitivity. It works well with a stylus, but not so much with a finger. Resistive screens don't have any future on tablets.

I ordered off aliexpress and got my package from China delivered to the Southeast US in about a week ($202 delivered). I won't spam the board with the vendor info; if anybody is interested, just send me a PM here.

"Resistive screens don't have any future on tablets."

I would disagree with that. Maybe not for the mainstream consumer market, but the few long-time tablet enthusiast at work would never buy anything that is not resistive.

If I hadn't spent a year using overclocked Droids with a capacitive screen I wouldn't know what I was missing...

I'm an old school/PDA kind of guy, and for the price I actually have no problem using a stylus on my ZT-180 screens and then all works just fine...

Sure the current builds leave a lot to be desired/improved... the improvement in just over a month with a much smaller installed/invested dev base than the Moto Droid has been great...

OK, i've tested mine for few hours... and here is my brief review;

Built quality: Feel like a toy. Material is not so good, though not very bad. Rear cover is slippery after used for a while (better grab of its side).

Size and weight: Perfect. 10" at 1024x600 and merely 600 grams. Feel comfortable holding it for hours.

Display: Brightness and clarity are good, but viewing angle is bad. Just around 15 degrees to any direction make it difficult to see.

Touchscreen: Quite responsive. Can scroll pages smoothly. Especially while reading PDF. This will be a very good ebook(PDF) reader. Accuracy is not a problem, i didn't calibrate the touchscreen and didn't have any accuracy problem.

Speakers: Don't expect much from its 2 tiny speakers. Sound quality is not good, turn to max volume and they sound like crack.

Screen rotation: Good and response fast. I can turn it at any direction and the screen did rotate accordingly. (mostly, depends on the software)

Wifi: i didn't have any disconnect problem (after used for few hours).

USB: I tested with 2 of my wireless (2.5Ghz) Keyboard+mouse, all worked very fine. Haven't test with USB drive and external harddrive.

Video playing: I played 720p and 1080p movies and music videos just fine, providing that the video codec = XVID/DIVX and audio codec = MP3. Tried AVC and AAC, both didn't do it well. I will try more video and audio codecs and let you know later.

Market: The seller said there is no market yet. But i got SlideMe market pre-installed. Downloaded and installed Opera mini just fine.

Overall: I'm quite satisfied with this tablet. It can do what i expected. Worth the money.

That's all i feel for it upto now.

Oh, the one that i got has following firmware:
Model: p7901a
Firmware: 2.1-update1
Kernel: 2.6.32.9 root@zenithink#1603
Built Number: p7901a-eng2.1update1 ERE27 eng.root.20100708.111326 test-keys

whats the ad you order from?

Hi; I just got me new z180 e pad and am having a hard time connecting to the web thru my router. It recognizes my network and when I put my password , i keep getting message "incorrect password". very frustrating. I am using a secured network.any help appreciated.
I plan to go to starbucks or Mac- who have free wifi access- later to see if it will work on the open network.

Until you flash it up to the 0818 version I couldn't get WEP security to work... seems fine since I flashed to 0818... Open and WPA work in all the firmware versions (0708, 0804, 0809, 0818) as long as you can get a good solid signal to connect...

Could someone please post some picture of the unit with it's back removed or post how to remove it, thank you very much

yep, agreed, i'm surprised there isnt any DECENT cover off pics, surely someone could be good enough to strip and remove with pix etc etc,

whoah! that sounded wrong,
