Root ZTE ZMAX Pro (Z981) root discussion

Ive been messing around with this for hours, so far ive only been able to Execute a bypass on read and write , which is useless without root... sigh

To be honest the only reason I ever wanted to root my previous devices, was to improve performance. I find no need to have to improve this device in any way. It performs everything I need it to do flawlessly, and with gusto.

I'm starting this thread so that we can possibly work together to try to find a way to get root on this phone and compare notes on what we have tried. To be honest, I doubt that we are going to get root without a custom recovery and a way to flash it. I think that the key is either ftm mode which is accessed by holding power and volume up, or by holding power volume up and volume down which boots the phone into a mode where only the home key lights up. I believe that this is download mode and might possibly give us access to the bootloader. The big question is what program/drivers we are going to need on the PC end. All ideas are welcome here. If you think you might be able to help don't hesitate.

Thanks for everyone's efforts here. Although I can't help with the technical end, I will do whatever I can to promote this to happen by getting others on board in ways that will be helpful.

So, I don't see it posted here, but I just saw this on the ZTE Community forum, figured I'd share it. It sounds like a bit of hearsay, but hopefully it means an update is coming soon, as ZTE has been gathering information about ZMax Pros from owners in their community and Google Plus forums:

Lol keep knocking on China's door for KingRoot exploit. I really don't want to have to use them if I can avoid it.

I'm still waiting for them to break an AT&T Kyocera Hydro Air open. Hopefully nobody starts following their locking method :/

That is an outdated unsupported version of kingroot. I just opened up kingroot 4.9.5 and here is what it says.

If I know anything about the kingroot devs they aren't going to look into finding an exploit for this phone until the number of requests is in the thousands.

ZTE told me there is no plans to unlock the bootloader and that it will not receive Nougat or any updates.

ZTE Told me the bootloader will stay locked for the z981 forever. Unless phone sales goes down.

ZTE told me there is no plans to unlock the bootloader and that it will not receive Nougat or any updates.

To the best of my knowledge, ZTE has stated on their community website that this device will get an update, but no one really knows what kind of update. They have also stated to me directly that any bootloader unlock or fastboot enabling is basically up to MetroPCS, as the software updates have to be approved by them since they are the carrier for the phone. Sucks, but it is what it is. I am just hoping for an update to fix some of the nagging bugs, and this phone will be an even better value for the money.

Please post the message in which they told you this.
* Updated binaries, translations and definitions
* New CorpseFinder filter for unrooted devices: /Android/media.
* Setup fixes for rooted Android 7.0+ devices
* Fixed disk-usage issue with files >2GB
* Improved detection of duplicate files
This is for an app SD maid. If they already have plans to support 7.0 rooted.

It is only logical business savvy to offer
either the boot unlock or the upgrade to 7.0... The latter of the two cost Metro$$$. The unlock however, they can charge for and make money on procedure they already possess. I would drop an "unspecified amount of money" ( $hh, don't give them ideas ) for root access.

The ZTE ZMAX PRO will not be rooted anytime soon.
That's Ok...
This device certainly does the job "As Is" it's feature packed (including adaptive storage) and for me I took advantage of the additional $60.00 off promo by porting a google number and got it for $39.99 + 1 months service ($30.00) and tax.. if Root comes it comes.. if not, it's still is "The" device for sub - $200.00 devices... :-)

There is no reason why ZTE should update the Zmax pro as it is only on one carrier.
Sorry Supergear... That is NOT correct..
Walmart here on the West Coast.. now carries the Zmax Pro for $149.99 under the "Walmart-Family-Mobile" banner.. would have taken a pic of it but trust me.. they now have it as well.. just priced $110.00 higher than you can get it on MetroPCS if you buy and port a number.. :-)

I mean I hear that for sure. However the idea of the octacore snapdragon, debloated, brought into the Harmony between processor and battery. Access to the parameters to hike the volumes to 13 or so. Zte made a platform that is Almost 100% just a root away.

That's the exact reason's I want root. Debloating..I don't want it disabled.. I want it removed, probably gonna be the best battery life I've ever had.. and hopefully a sound mod. I heard this guy playing music at a work site with light construction going on. It sounded pretty damn good and loud to me. I've had Note 2, Note 4 and OnePlus One with volume mods as reference. They were startlingly loud. People have actually flinched or said, "Wow!" BTW, I don't have the phone yet, but I'm 99% sure I'm going to buy it with the understanding that it may not get root..but I'm sure I would already have it if it was rootable.
