Samsung have begun the roll-out of the stable Android 14, One UI 6.0 release. First to receive it are the international devices, G9**B.

It is a FOTA, (Firmware Over The Air), update and you can check... Settings > Software update... to see if it is available for you. Alternatively, you can connect to the Samsung PC suite, Smart Switch and check via that.

Restoring Note 8 from Factory Reset - SD Card: 'ready to transfer media files'

Hello,

I have an old Samsung Note 8 and am recovering from a painful accidental factory reset.
I have utilized and am progressing with ~partial~ backups from Samsung, Google, and Xfinity and have re-installed many apps from the Play Store.
I have an SD card that I have a great deal of data on.
Before the reset, I used App Manager III to clear caches and move as many of 250 apps to the SD card as I could, even "unmovable" ones.

Before I trash what progress I've made by manually and semi-automatically restoring my device, I am here to ask expert advice.

I am occasionally seeing a message saying 'ready to transfer media files'. I have no idea about the implications, or what that does.

Using MyFiles I can see the contents of the card.
The first folder on the card is titled Android. Its subfolders are data, media, and obb.
Inside the data folder are 571 items, almost all beginning with "com..xxx."
The other two Android folders are similar with the com. prefix, although with many fewer files.

The Documents folder has, of course, documents, as well as some .SPD files created by Samsung Notes, some of which I am interested in.
There are others like .PDF, .TXT, .DOCX, M3U...etc.
--and folders like--
DCIM/Camera (2031 items),Facebook, From Phone, Screenshots
Download (641 items)
Visual VoiceMail
Music (3333 items), System Volume Information (1 item),

Perhaps obviously, I don't want to corrupt anything, and yet I'd like to restore what I can.
I also want to begin moving apps out of internal memory and back over to the card.

I promise I'll be more diligent about backups.

Thanks in advance for your helpful advice.

PS: Since startups were taking SO long, I disabled the Secure Startup, and have not seen the 'ready to transfer media files' on a couple of startups. I'm not sure if that notification will return or not. ;)

  • Question Question
S21 giving no audible notifications

I've asked this question in various forms in a munber of fora. No one has been able to answer. Hope I have better luck here.
Samsung S21 / watch3
For over a year I've been having a LOT of problems with recceiving no audible notifications for a number of apps. For now, let's use gmail. I'll go days with no audible notifications when receiving email. The notification will popup on my watch (sometimes with vibration, sometime not) and, for reasons I don't understand, I'll infrequently receive an email AND get an audible notification, after which, back to nothing. Same is true of Life360, Ring, Life Reminders, SMS, and a few others. All of them give audible notifications only rarely.
I've tried updating/reinstalling apps, rebooting the phone and watch separately and together, turning off the watch for a day, . . . nothing helps.
At times Ring and gmail will not only give no audible notification, but give a popup on my watch 10-15 minutes after the trigger. Not great when someone rings my doorbell.
But let's go back to Life360. I get no audible notifications when a family member arrives at a specified destination, but every time the vehicle stops, I get a driving summary WITH audible notification. Summary, but no destination. In addition, Life360 app shows the drive and the correct time arrived at a destination, so it gets the time/location correct. I get a popup. Just no audible notification.
Ring shows the correct time of a trigger, I get the popup without audible notification, but when the notification is delayed, the app shows the correct trigger time. So, like Life360, the app recognizes the trigger time and often gets to my watch, but no audible notification.
Phone volume is up. I know? the apps are set correctly, because Settings are right, the trigger times are recorded, a popup appears, and sometimes I receive the audible notification. I've been to the phone's Settings>Notifications>App Notifications too many times. Turned off/on notifications of all affected apps one at a time and all at once. Turned off notifications/rebooted/turned on notifications. I've tried to 'time' the silent notifications in an effort to see if there was a hidden schedule somewhere affecting volume. Nope, lack of volume is nearly 24hr/day with the occasional 'surprise' notification. And some apps (e.g., Microsoft To Do) ALWAYS give audible notifications.
I hope someone can diagnosis this.

Category descriptions need updates

Wow, does the main page need work.

Descriptions of the categories are almost archaic... take Wearables, for example:

"Our Android Wear forum is the place to discuss all types of Android wearables, from sleek Android smartwatches, to Google Glass, to fitness accessories and the latest wearable trends. Google was first to truly innovate in this emerging market and Android Forums is the place to follow its every move."

Android Wear has been Wear OS for a long time - and Google Glass was abandoned before that!

As a copywriter, I'll be happy to help revise or rewrite these. Just let me know what I can do to help.

:)

Charging connected USB device

I don't know why it says that. There is nothing connected to it right now, not even a charger. It also says USB is controlled by a connected device. I wanted to switch it, but it said it couldn't. I noticed that the choices are all gray. Thank goodness it's set to file transfer because I know about those crashes when maybe data could be recovered but not without it. I hope everybody's having a happy Thanksgiving.

New earbuds = No Like

I don't know what it is with the push to further miniaturize truly wireless Bluetooth earbuds. They seemed to be at the good balance a few years ago: a balance between small & unimposing and functional. Perhaps it was the Apple Airpods, with the little white dingalings hanging out of people's ears, that have driven innovation to extremes.

At any rate, I haven't found a pair in years that didn't fall straight out of my ears. I had the Sony WF-1000XM3s, which were a good balance of function and fashion. I then tried the Galaxy Buds 2 Pro, which are little dots that, once in the ear, have to fall out or I can't pull them out. I decided to move up to the Sony WF-1000XM5s, which aren't much better. The little dots for control surfaces are small targets... and they quickly work their way lose and I have to catch them before they fall to the ground.

Are there any earbuds out there that (a) have the latest advances in connectivity and quality; (b) don't have dingalings hanging out of ears; and (c) actually stay IN THE EARS while being easy to control??? Or am I asking way too much? I've tried various eartips and they're either too big or end up stuck in my ear canal after I remove the earbud. It doesn't bother me if people notice that I'm wearing earbuds... I am, after all, wearing earbuds!

Moronity runs amok at Google

I had a Google Pixel 3XL phone and it was great, but I now have a Google Pixel 7 Pro and it has some major issues.

Here is one example: On the old phone, the Flip-to-Shhh feature worked exactly as expected. On the new phone, while the Flip-to-Shhh feature stops the phone from making noise, when a call or text comes in, it turns on ‘Do Not Disturb’. What sort of effing moron could have come up with this notion that is so incredibly stupid it is unimaginable?

Bluetooth hearing aids have messed up app notifications

I have a Samsung S22 running Android 13. Recently I was issued a pair of Danalogic Bluetooth hearing aids. These operate with an app called BeMore. Among the facilities available is audio streaming direct from the phone. I haven't changed any settings in the phone or the app to enable this but nevertheless I found that some app audible notifications had started coming through the aids. I say "some" because not all do and to make matters worse I stopped getting sounds or vibration from the phone itself.

I've found that when the aids are turned off (overnight). or if I turn off Bluetooth on the phone, most of the notifications revert to the phone. One, my K-9 email client, doesn't. I've rechecked all the app settings. Everything is still enabled and the sound (Concertina) plays if I tap it but I don't get sound or vibration when a message arrives. Volume is set to maximum both in the notification settings and via the manual key on the phone.

This query is a bit of a last resort because I can't find any troubleshooting information or Forums on the Danalogic website. I'm just hoping that someone on here might have had experience with similar problems and might be able to offer some advice.

Orientation in Google Meet

I'm having a problem with image orientation when using Google Meet for video calls. To keep the display in landscape mode I have to orient the phone vertically, i.e. in portrait mode, and vice versa. This happens whether I allow rotation or don't. I did a test with my wife's iPhone (I have a Samsung S21+). She called me. My orientation changed with her orientation. When she held her phone vertically, I had to orient my phone vertically for the image to fill the screen. When she held her phone horizontally, I also had to hold my phone horizontally for the image to fill the screen.
I frequently have a call with someone calling me on an iPad. I don't think her orientation changes mine. She orients her iPad landscape and I have to orient my phone vertically for the image to fill the screen. And that image is landscape. So I have to look at it sideways.
Is this the way this is supposed to work? How do I fix this with the iPad?
Thank you.

Transferring files from Android phone to PC?

Hi all,

I just want to know the most secure way I can transfer data like my SMS messages, contacts and other personal data from my Huawei Android phone to my Windows 10 PC.

I want to be clear that I don't want the easiest way to transfer data, just the most secure way so that I can be certain that my personal phone data isn't transmitted to anyone else or any other device.

I've been trying all night to backup via MyBackUp Pro, but I'm constantly told there is an error: My Backup Pro - Apps on Google Play

I've sent Rerware an email about the problems with the App.

I'm currently reading this link: Lost Your USB Cable? Here Are Other Ways to Connect an Android to a PC

Thanks for any help!!!

Getting Multiple Gmail Notifications for each Message

I have a Samsung Galaxy S7 running Android 8. I use Gmail as my primary email app. Recently, I suddenly started receiving multiple notification tones for each email message I receive. I've changed the tone for Gmail and the multiple tones continued. Going to Settings -> Accounts -> Accounts, I see my normal Gmail account for Google is listed as well accounts set up for the default Email app and the Samsung account (see photo). I don't remember linking my Gmail account to the default Email or Samsung account. Would the multiple notification tones I'm receiving be coming from one or both of these other apps that my Gmail account is tied to? I can remove those other two but I'm warned that all messages, contacts, etc. will be deleted. Would those be deleted from my real Gmail account? Wacky stuff, this.
