Android Permissions Manager

Android OS, since Android 11, removes permissions and notifications from apps that have not been used recently. It then offers a link to shed light on that removal, which brings me to a page of all my apps arranged alphabetically.
Is there a way to determine which apps just had their settings changed, perhaps with some choices in how they are sorted; when last opened, when permissions were last changed, etc?
It's frustrating to get these automatic changes to my system without specific explanation.
Thanks.

Motorola .BAK File replaced my own file on Android 12

Hello, tech wizards. On my Android phone, I created a file of easily-forgotten data (in DOCX format). I used SoftMaker Textmaker app to do this. The file was not confidential, so I did not apply a password to it, and my intention was to store this file in a folder on my SD card, which I did.

Then, I created another DOCX file with the same app. This time, the information in the file WAS confidential (passwords etc.), so I applied a password to it. Later, I noticed that the non-secret file had disappeared, and in its place was a .BAK file of the same name, which, when I clicked on it, opened. I noticed that all my information showed, so I was not particularly bothered at that time. However, I noticed also that, although the other file (the one with the password) remained in this folder, next to it was an additional file of the same name, but in the .BAK format. I can open the original, protected file by clicking on it, and it can open in SoftMaker as it should). The corresponding (secret) .BAK file opens when clicked on, but (because it is password protected) nothing shows except gobbledegook. That's fine, in a way.

However, I feel quite disturbed about two things, The first is that duplicate .BAK files should have appeared at all, and without my asking for them (taking up valuable space). The second is that, though I can read all of the non-protected information that I stored in a file of my own making, that original file has totally disappeared. I should greatly have preferred to keep my two original, SoftMaker files, and not have these unwanted .BAK files show their face at all. Why should a self-created file disappear in favour of an unrequested file?

Can anyone suggest why one of my original files has disappeared, and why the .BAK files have appeared, when I never asked for them? Also, what to do to prevent this happening again, with other files I may make?

Finally, may I ask a question: if I were to delete the .BAK file that is a twin of the "secret" file, might it not cause the original file to disappear, as the other original file did? I should not like to lose all that information!

I should be very grateful if someone could enlighten me about these matters. By the way, I am aware that .BAK files are back-up files, but why should they sit there, taking up space, when I am quite confident of keeping the original files safe? It is not as if they are like short-cuts, using up only a few bytes — they are the same size as the original files!

With thanks in advance,
S.

S23+ zoom capabilities

I have an S23+ and curious on the zoom capabilities. I have 3 questions:
  1. When zooming on the slider, at what "x" value does it switch over to using the optical zoom lens. For example, at 100x how much is optical, and how much is digital zoom?
  2. Is there a way to pick optical zoom only?
  3. What is the mm telephoto lens equivalent of 100x?

Income Tax Time for 2023

Started to put all my income tax stuff together for 2023. I discovered a 1099 from a company that I have never had or heard of in the past, so I called them.I gave the first woman my name, DOB, SSN, account number and she couldn't find anything on my information so she forwarded my call to a supervisor. 30 minutes on hold and I get a supervisor. Turns out one of pensions I have decided late in the year to switch companies that pay it out. How stupid is that? How am I suppose to know that unless I waste time trying to figure it out. I was told a letter was sent out about it.

OTA Antenna Reception

I found out yesterday that CBS will be airing the Super Bowl in 4K. After a quick look I find that my provider, DTV, will have a special channel for the 4K broadcast. I then made certain that I was ready for the big game in 4K and I'm not.
It seems it will take an upgrade to my current equipment and possibly an upgrade of my subscription to receive the special broadcast and all 4K content they host. I'm not interested in upgrading my plan or equipment at an additional expense to see what little 4K they have. Besides, if I upgraded the equipment, my wife would lose the million BS shows she has recorded. Happy wife... happy life! I'm not upgrading!!
As an alternative 4K source I'm considering a cheap inside TV antenna for over the air reception. I find there are many such antennas to be had and realize their ability to receive signals have so many variables that it's impossible to claim one is better than another. I thought I'd ask anyway if someone has an inside OTA antenna that they like. I will check out Walmart and Target today and have time to order one from Amazon. I thought a local purchase would be best for an easy return option if it doesn't do the job.

Play going haywire

I don't know what's wrong with this phone. It was pretty much OK but now it starts saving camera internally instead of to SD, sometimes No Root Firewall isn't working but I didn't shut it off, and do not disturb has stopped protecting from google. How do I make it work right? Why doesn't No Root Firewall come on automatically when I reboot, which is what I told it to do?

Seeking advice: Samsung S10, taking screenshots without prompts, etc.

Samsung S10, Bixby button - set to take screenshots.

I used to have a routine that would take a screenshot of a screen, without prompting and/or showing the results.
Just a short notification that the screenshot was taken. This worked fine for a lllong time.
Regretfully Samsung decided to update Bixby so the routine doesn't work anymore.
At least .. not properly.
There is some blue spinning circle and I can't close it without some error message.

I -might- link to the Bixby button to some screenshot taking app.
However, when pushing the Bixby button the app will be opened and I should go from there.
That isn't really what I had in mind: I should be able to take screenshots one after the other without any interruptions.
So, the way before Samsung updated Bixby.

Q: does anybody out there know an app that could link to the Bixby button and that will silently take screenshots upon pushing that button?
(I vainly searched for it)

p.s. The way I had set it up is described in this Youtube video.
How to take a screenshot with the Bixby button

Thanks!

"Mobile network not available" on Pixel 7

I've had my Google Pixel 7, running Android 13, since November 2022.

In the last few days, I can't make phone calls because it says Mobile network not available. If I go to Settings, Network & Internet, it shows no SIMs (Add a network). If I restart my phone, no luck. If I turn off my phone for a few hours, it gets back to a SIM of Verizon for a few hours, before this starts again.

Furthermore, even if I'm on WiFi, I can't make or receive calls. Making my phone quite useless.

Hope someone can help. This is too early for a phone to stop working. And I loved by old Google Pixel 2XL.

Best place to sell used tech & electronics?

I've accumulated soooo many "devices" over the years.

Many of the devices I'll probably never sell, purely out of nostalgia (T-Mobile G1, Motorola XOOM, Google Glass, Palm Pre etc...), but others I'm needlessly holding onto for no reason (unused chromebooks, tablets, phones, 360 cameras, OG HTC Vive, etc...).

Where's the best place to sell used electronics these days? I'm planning to list some items across a few different platforms -- assuming eBay and Facebook Marketplace are the defacto standards these days -- but curious how people like/dislike other marketplaces these days? I remember Swappa caught steam for a bit but pretty sure that died out.

I've also got a zillion cables and cords, but assume unless they're rare and in high demand -- like an original NES power cable or something -- they're essentially useless. And don't get me started on the number of cheap still-in-the-package headphones that should have gone straight into the trashcan.

So let's hear it: what's your favorite place to sell used stuff?

Heart Trauma Recovery

After 70 years of near flawless health, I suffered a very sever heart attack that I was lucky to survive. I had total blockage of my left ventricle which required two stints to clear. I'm almost two months past my hospital release and I'm starting to feel a bit better. I'm required to wear a life vest / defibrillator vest in case I suffer another attack which would be fatal if not immediately addressed. I return to my specialist the sixth and then again the twelfth of Feb. to see how my heart might be recovering and if I can get out of this dang contraption. I have no idea where this journey will take me. I might need a pacemaker... or additional stints or bypasses.. I am clueless.
Whatever I'm up against, I'm ready. I am eating healthier and trying to exercise the best I can. I don't know how hard to work myself. I just returned from a walk around the block at as fast pace as possible which didn't seem to impact my heart or breathing. I think I'm finally improving.

I'm lucky in that besides my heart valves restricting flow, I am in great shape for an old man. I have zero extra weight, no diabetic problems, no breathing problem... etc. I had no indication that I had heart problems prior to the attack. I actually thought I had indigestion :) I was lucky.

I know that I'm not likely the only one to suffer a heart problem here on the forums. If you would care to share your journey, I would be very interested in listening.

logitech m585 bluetooth mouse won't connect

I have a galaxy tab s5e. I opened it today, and bluetooth was toggled off. The mouse was connected before, but won't connect now. My bluetooth keyboard is connected.

The mouse is also connected to my PC. I just had to change the receiver yesterday, and use the unifying software to pair the mouse. Works fine on my desktop. is the receiver change responsible part of the problem?
