Smartphone hotspot is connected & secured but no internet access on laptop ?

Here is a virtually zero cost option which worked for me in (somewhat) different circumstances.
"Forget" the connection to your hotspot. And then reconnect.

Hello Reed,

Yeah, I already tried that unfortunately. I briefly mentioned it in my original post.

I keep thinking something has changed with the hotspot service. Weird though, that all 3 devices (laptop, desktop and tablet) say they are connected to the internet (via smarphone hotspot) but they won't have any internet capabilities. Very strange.

z fold 3 is going kaput

Ok last week, my z fold 3 finally kicked the bucket. The inside screen went out. So instead of buying from Samsung again, I got another z for 3 from Best Buy and also got Greek Squad protection.

Today I went to my Samsung care+ appointment. It was supposed to be at 3pm. I got there at 245. They told me the tech just went on a break and would be back shortly. So I waited after 20 minutes they finally told me that he was on his lunch break and would be back in 30mi utes.......YOU GOT TO BE KIDDING ME!!!!!!!! I had the appointment for 2 weeks.....2 WEEKS!!!!!! Why did he take his lunch break at the same time as my appointment.......ridiculousness!!!!!!!

They told my that I should not have to pay fire anything as it is still under warranty. Should have the phone fixed by Wednesday.

Apps Storage Access Framework & Google Drive

I'm working on an app and want the ability to read/write files in a directory on Google Drive. In the past for local files I use Storage Access Framework with Intent.ACTION_OPEN_DOCUMENT_TREE to get access to a directory and it's files/sub-directories. How do I get the Storage Access Framework interface to show Google drive and not just local memory (device, microSD, usbkeys).

I have seen info on Google Drive REST API but those posts are years old and it seems the Storage Access Framework should support it to make access much easier. Am I missing why it wouldn't be supported or is there something needed to pick a Google account so it knows which Google Drive account to show?

Aka, what is needed beyond:
Code:
val i = Intent(Intent.ACTION_OPEN_DOCUMENT_TREE)
i.addCategory(Intent.CATEGORY_DEFAULT)
i.flags = Intent.FLAG_GRANT_PERSISTABLE_URI_PERMISSION and Intent.FLAG_GRANT_WRITE_URI_PERMISSION
startActivityForResult(i, SELECT_CURRENT_DIR)

Thanks,
Gary

Backup and Restore App for Android V-6.0.1.

I want to DISABLE or FORCE STOP or UNINSTALL all AT&T related app
Without going into too much detail, you can remove ATT apps with the following ADB commands. You need to use caution. If you remove a system vital app, you may find yourself in a bootloop. Any apps removed with this method can be restored by factory resetting or running the last two commands below.

Check if device is available to ADB...
Bash:
adb devices

List all apps on device and copy the package name of the apps you would like to remove...
Bash:
adb shell pm list packages -f

Remove app package...
Bash:
adb shell pm uninstall --user 0 PACKAGE_NAME_HERE

Reinstall app that was removed with the above^ command...
Bash:
adb shell pm install -r --user 0 /PATH/TO/APP_NAME.apk

To get the apk path for the command above^...
Bash:
adb shell pm dump PACKAGE_NAME_HERE | grep path

Paired device keeps disappearing

Does your S20 have any issues saving Bluetooth pairings to other devices or is this just an issue with your Nisson?
This 'might' help determine if the problem is with Bluetooth on your phone or your Nisson's head unit.

https://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/galaxy-s20-5g/specs/
Looking at the hardware specs for your S20, it includes support for Bluetooth 5.0 (2016), so unless the head unit in your 2012 Nisson is running a really dated version of Bluetooth, I wouldn't think that's the actual issue. If you dig out the User Manual for your vehicle, is there any reference in it about the Bluetooth support?

Nougat : block 1 app updating

Well changes to the user interface don't actually occur with every app version update but yeah it can be annoying when it does at times. But not all interface changes are problematic and it's undeniable that a lot of version updates are actually bug fixes and/or security patches. You need to weigh how much you resist change versus intentionally making your phone's online access less safe.

Identify an icon

If you scroll all through your Settings >> Apps menu, do any of the apps in the listing appear to be at least similar in some way to that icon? Be sure that any show System apps option is enabled so you'll be viewing all the installed apps (apps you installed along with all the pre-installed apps.) The thing is, that Status bar at the top of our phones can contain a confusing mix of app notification icons plus various Android services icons.
If might show the icon with name if you swipe down twice on the Status bar, that's been a common way to expand the icon menu.

It's said high voltage will stress battery and wear it out in the long run?

FWIW Google did introduce charging limits with Android 12, where the phone can be set to not charge above a certain amount. On my Galaxy Note20 Ultra, it's stop charging at 85%. I have enabled this, as I rarely use more than 40-50% in a single day with this phone. Although when I'm travelling, I do want to the phone to be charged 100% before I start out.

Concerned a Domestic Abuser May Have Put Stalkerware on My Phone

Thanks. I appreciate the recommendation. That app may be useful later.

I understand a hard reset would be the safest option, but I think I’ll choose not to do it unless I notice more strange activity. As mentioned multiple times, I don’t believe the abuser ever had physical access to my Google Pixel 4a.

I did contact the retailer and confirmed that they transitioned from the m.example.com mobile site to a www.example.com mobile site the same day I noticed the website behavior in Firefox was fixed. One explanation for the strange behavior was they had set up a permanent (HTTP 301) redirect from m.example.com to m.com that cached in Firefox on my device. However, this doesn’t explain why the website worked in Chrome. Can anyone think of another benign explanation?

I take it by “[my] own account” you mean my own Verizon account. If so, I have had my own Verizon account at various points because of my fear of him monitoring my activity or suspending my cell access. I will look into it again soon, I hope.

I did set up two-step verification with my Google account shortly before I posted this thread. Does anyone know what would happen if I lost my cell phone and/or cell phone number? Would Google be able to let me in with other credentials, such as my backup email address? If I remember correctly, Google won’t let someone into an account with two-factor verification via the backup email address alone.

Thanks again.

Ok. This is an old post but i needed to explain something very obvious that others did not just in case you happen to read this several months later.

You keep talking about the various ways you could or couldnt have had your phone compromised but are ignoring so much. If he pays for the cell phone bill then he can have any access he wants to your text, calls, and location if not more. You need to pay for your own phone service. Doing so will be the easiest way to secure your phone from the simplest way abusers access phones.

You also kept saying that he never had physical access to the phone but then go on to say that he had the phone in his possession. If you live with him and sleep in the same home then he has physical access to your phone. If you can view each character of your password as youre typing it & then it disappears a second later as your type the rest of the password? People can easily watch that and get the password or secretly record you unlocking your phone (keep in mind it's likely a 4 digit code so its easier to do than you think.) If he can unlock the phone then he can install every single type of spyware app that exists and they could easily be able to remain after a reset. If you have biometrics such as finger print. He could use your finger when youre sleeping especially after a night of drinking or if youre a deep sleeper(abusers are mentally ill. The lengths they will go are not something that is easy for sane people to imagine.)
You basically keep allowing him access.
Its almost amazing how much research you probably put into figuring this all out yet its literally probably an issue because you live with the abuser. He pays your bills. And you want to keep the same email and likely use that email to install backups which would include any old malicious apps the bf installed. So many vulnerabilities....

Help Move apps to SD? Uninstall pre-installed apps?

Ever see the way Firefox keeps a record of everything you download?
That's for the user's convenience - you can restart failed downloads, look up where you saved something if you can't find it, etc. It's your history on your browser for your reference - it has nothing to do with privacy, unless you have a habit of letting random strangers use your computer.

[Your second comment is non-specific and mistrusting with no actual facts. And this whole discussion is off-topic - let's please just put this thread to bed.]

Option to Unlink Contacts Not Showing

In my google contacts, there used to be an option to managed linked contacts. I'm no longer seeing that. I have a contact that in "edit" mode, I see only one address, but when I view in the Contacts app (native on Samsung Note 10), there are two addresses. Not sure if this changed in a recent update. I really hope Google is not becoming what I hate about Apple.

Toast (?) messages

Thanks again for taking the time to reply.
Like you I avoid updates unless absolutely vital. I have been ignoring this one for several months, until I thought I could ignore it no longer.
I will try out your suggestions and see how far it gets me.
I really would like to continue using at least two of these apps so, as you say, I may eventually have to live with the inconvenience. Such is life.

If you already know what apps are causing the toasts, then find them in settings, apps, show all, show system, and then deny permission to overlay.

If you are not using these apps anyway, just disable them.

If you are using them, then you may be stuck with it.

This is but one reason why I avoid 'security updates' like The Plague.
Usually it is only forced updates to useless app I don't even want, and as an extra bonus they get permissions and 'features' that make me want them even less.

You may be able to downgrade these apps to their previous state, but all data for them will be erased.
Also, it is a bit involved and tedious.

I use Uptodown, https://en.uptodown.com/ (the app is needed) to find the app(s) and then try to install a version earlier than what is on the device.
You cant do that with a system app, but it CAN erase any updates to that app if you try to uninstall.
(Installing another version is not needed, just the deletion of the updates.)

Can you tell me what this app is?

OK, try going into Settings > Apps and looking for this app there. That should give you the full name, but also is where you can control its permissions and uninstall it if you want. If it was installed from the Play Store you can also uninstall it by finding it in your library of apps there (select it and there will be an uninstall option).

If it's something the manufacturer added you won't be able to uninstall it, but you should be able to disable it and uninstall any updates to it.

I cannot find an app of this name in the play store, but whether that's because it didn't come from there or because the Play Store search is incredibly bad (which it is, despite search being Google's core business) I don't know.

Thank you. I'll keep working on this.
