Apps Android: advice on method to wake up CPU from sleep, carry out a task then go back to sleep

Hi, I have created a time lapse camera app that collects images during daylight hours and uploads those images to an FTP server. I now need to add a method to prolong battery life by putting the cpu to sleep at night, wake it up in the morning, collect and image, then go back to sleep in-between image collections (15 - 20 mins). The code i have used so far is based on the processing IDE with some android based java as well where necessary.

I have tried using wake-locks which didn't seem to work and have had a look at the AlarmManager class which might be the way to go but my programming skills aren't great. The AlarmManager class had an example that (i think) could wake the cpu at a given time then use the setRepeating method to wake up the device every x minutes after that. Is this correct? However i need it to stop doing that at night and repeat the next day(s) which adds another layer of complexity.

Any advice on this and/or example code to get me started would be much appreciated.

Cheers

Using the charger not provided by google voids your warranty of your pixel. Why don't they warn?

Here's my chat with google support. My phone overheats when outside and record videos when it's sunny outside. Also, you don't have a warranty on your pixel unless you buy two smart phones so you can take a picture of your phone having an issue.

<p dir='ltr' style='margin-top:0; margin-bottom:0; text-align:start;'>Support</p>

<p dir='ltr' style='margin-top:0; margin-bottom:0; text-align:start;'>You’re connected with agent Nora S.</p>

<p dir='ltr' style='margin-top:0; margin-bottom:0; text-align:start;'>12:57 PM</p>

Hello

12:57 PM

<p dir='ltr' style='margin-top:0; margin-bottom:0; text-align:center;'>N</p>

Hey David.

Thanks for contacting Google Support. My name is Nora S. In case you need to refer to this chat interaction in the future, please take note of the following ID 7-0660000031596.

I understand your device overheats.

Nora S · 12:57 PM

It only overheats if I have it in the case and try to record videos while it's hot outside

So, I cant use a case with the phone, so it I drop it, I'll break it

12:58 PM

<p dir='ltr' style='margin-top:0; margin-bottom:0; text-align:center;'>N</p>

I'd like to transfer you to a specialist for a closer look. Before I do this, do you mind if I ask you a few questions to help me better understand your situation?

Nora S · 12:58 PM

Ok

12:58 PM

<p dir='ltr' style='margin-top:0; margin-bottom:0; text-align:center;'>N</p>

Thanks.

I would need the front and back side images of the device, I am sending you an email here please send me the images attached to my email.

Nora S · 12:59 PM

Not sure why you would needf that

1:00 PM

<p dir='ltr' style='margin-top:0; margin-bottom:0; text-align:center;'>N</p>

Email sent!

Nora S · 1:00 PM

It's a pixel 4

Pixel 5

You can go on google images and search what a pixel 5 looks like

It looks brand new

1:00 PM

<p dir='ltr' style='margin-top:0; margin-bottom:0; text-align:center;'>N</p>

I understand but I still need to images to get you connected with the specialist.

Nora S · 1:01 PM

That's rediculus

Why?

1:01 PM

<p dir='ltr' style='margin-top:0; margin-bottom:0; text-align:center;'>N</p>

Because specialist would need the images.

Nora S · 1:01 PM

Ok... I don't have a second phone to take a picture of my pixel

1:02 PM

<p dir='ltr' style='margin-top:0; margin-bottom:0; text-align:center;'>N</p>

Okay.

Help me with the IMEI of the device?

You can find the IMEI number by the following methods:
1. Settings> About phone> MEID> IMEI information.
2. Dial *#06#
3. Check the SIM card tray.
4. Check the device box

Nora S · 1:02 PM

355

1:03 PM

<p dir='ltr' style='margin-top:0; margin-bottom:0; text-align:center;'>N</p>

May I know, from where have you purchased the device? ( Country and Store )

Nora S · 1:03 PM

USA from verizon

1:04 PM

<p dir='ltr' style='margin-top:0; margin-bottom:0; text-align:center;'>N</p>

The IMEI is incorrect please help me with the correct IMEI

Nora S · 1:04 PM

35

1:05 PM

<p dir='ltr' style='margin-top:0; margin-bottom:0; text-align:center;'>N</p>

May I know if you are using original charger which came with the device?

Nora S · 1:05 PM

No... But why would that matter? I don't have it plugged in when I'm outside recording

1:05 PM

<p dir='ltr' style='margin-top:0; margin-bottom:0; text-align:center;'>N</p>

It matters as the using different chargers can cause issue like the one you are having.

Nora S · 1:06 PM

Ok, so you're saying using a charger not included with the phone perminantly destroys the phone?

Why isn't there a warning label on the phone?

1:07 PM

<p dir='ltr' style='margin-top:0; margin-bottom:0; text-align:center;'>N</p>

Yes

Nora S · 1:07 PM

I used to have a phone that gave a warning when I didn't use the correct charget

This one doesn't do that.

So, why isn't there a warning?

1:08 PM

<p dir='ltr' style='margin-top:0; margin-bottom:0; text-align:center;'>N</p>

I cant comment on other devices however using the original charger with the device is mandate. That is the reason we provide charger with the device.

Not all chargers deliver the same amount of power

Please note that environmental conditions can affect the phone.

Nora S · 1:09 PM

Ok, so there's nothing I can do because I destroyed my phone using a different charger you're saying...

1:09 PM

<p dir='ltr' style='margin-top:0; margin-bottom:0; text-align:center;'>N</p>

Now I will get you connected with the specialist they will further help you with this.

Nora S · 1:09 PM

Ok

1:09 PM

<p dir='ltr' style='margin-top:0; margin-bottom:0; text-align:center;'>You’re connected with agent Michael.</p>

1:09 PM

<p dir='ltr' style='margin-top:0; margin-bottom:0; text-align:center;'>Nora S left the chat.</p>

Michael · 1:10 PM

Hi Michael. Do you have the ability to read previous notes? The last person I hope was clueless. Sounded like they were feeding me crap info. Made no sense

1:11 PM

<p dir='ltr' style='margin-top:0; margin-bottom:0; text-align:center;'>M</p>

Hello! I'm sorry with your experience.

Before we proceed, do we have the your consent to access data privacy?

Michael · 1:12 PM

Basically the jist of the conversation is I have used a charger that was not included when I bought it, so I've destroyed my phone perminantly and the only option is to buy a new one

Yeah

1:12 PM

<p dir='ltr' style='margin-top:0; margin-bottom:0; text-align:center;'>M</p>

Thank you for the details.

Do you mind waiting 3-5 minutes while I take a look on this?

Michael · 1:12 PM

And I mean a new one as in a new phone

Ok

1:13 PM

<p dir='ltr' style='margin-top:0; margin-bottom:0; text-align:center;'>M</p>

Based on the documented notes by the previous agent, your device is experiencing overheating.

Michael · 1:14 PM

Yes

1:14 PM

<p dir='ltr' style='margin-top:0; margin-bottom:0; text-align:center;'>M</p>

Can you please confirm if this is true?

I see.

May I know what other issues is the phone having?

Michael · 1:14 PM

Yes when recording video with a phone case on and its hot outside

That's the only problem

1:15 PM

<p dir='ltr' style='margin-top:0; margin-bottom:0; text-align:center;'>M</p>

I'm sorry if the device is overheating. Please allow me another 3-5 minutes.

Michael · 1:15 PM

Ok

1:16 PM

<p dir='ltr' style='margin-top:0; margin-bottom:0; text-align:center;'>M</p>

I'm going to send you an email with some tips on troubleshooting your warm device.

Michael · 1:16 PM

Ok

1:17 PM

<p dir='ltr' style='margin-top:0; margin-bottom:0; text-align:center;'>M</p>

Can you try them out and see if it helps?

Thanks you.

I just sent it.

Let me know if you receive it.

Michael · 1:17 PM

I got it

1:19 PM

<p dir='ltr' style='margin-top:0; margin-bottom:0; text-align:center;'>M</p>

Thanks.

I'll stay on chat.

Michael · 1:19 PM

So, I see the big thing to close apps not using. One thing I don't like about android is you hit home and eve

The app is still running

You have to go into app settings to kill it

Seems like there would be a better way

1:21 PM

<p dir='ltr' style='margin-top:0; margin-bottom:0; text-align:center;'>M</p>

I understand your frustration. Please let me know if you tried all the troubleshooting steps.

By the way, as part of our documentation, we require photos of the device in multiple angles.

Michael · 1:22 PM

Well the only thing on that list I can try now is to close apps

My phone looks brand new

1:23 PM

<p dir='ltr' style='margin-top:0; margin-bottom:0; text-align:center;'>M</p>

I know you mentioned to the previous rep that you don't have an extra phone.

Michael · 1:23 PM

No physical damage at all

1:23 PM

<p dir='ltr' style='margin-top:0; margin-bottom:0; text-align:center;'>M</p>

But we need it as part of the documentation.

Do you think you can get some photos anytime today?

Michael · 1:23 PM

Do they make a case that only has bumpers for the edges so, as long as I drop it on a flat surface, the phones casing won't hit?

1:24 PM

<p dir='ltr' style='margin-top:0; margin-bottom:0; text-align:center;'>M</p>

Our case available is on Google Store.

I'm afraid we don't make any personalized items.

Michael · 1:25 PM

I'm not going to take pics. If you need to see what a pixel 5 looks like you can search Google images. Mine looks brand new. I could understand you needing pics if I was trying to put in a warranty claim

1:25 PM

<p dir='ltr' style='margin-top:0; margin-bottom:0; text-align:center;'>M</p>

As part of our process, we require photos of the exact phone that's having issues.

Don't worry, you can take all the time you need.

Michael · 1:26 PM

Well, that's rediculus

I don't have another phone to take a pic of my phone

1:27 PM

<p dir='ltr' style='margin-top:0; margin-bottom:0; text-align:center;'>M</p>

You may respond to the same email i sent you once you have the requested photos.

Michael · 1:27 PM

So you're warranty only covers people that owns two phones

1:27 PM

<p dir='ltr' style='margin-top:0; margin-bottom:0; text-align:center;'>M</p>

I'm sorry, David. We can only proceed if this will be properly documented witt the photos required.

Michael · 1:27 PM

I seriously need to go buy a second phone so I can take a pic of this phone?

1:27 PM

<p dir='ltr' style='margin-top:0; margin-bottom:0; text-align:center;'>M</p>

Let me know if you can borrow from someone

Google Maps Drawer; Mic, Home & Apps buttons & Random Quick Access Apps; how do I change these?

Hi.

I'm running Maps v10.68.1.

When I open the app and set a destination, I get the following screen which incorporates a "Start" button. Perfectly normal:

140439-eb29506a6a5ea5e3acddde8a6456d86d.jpg

However, when I then click the Start button, I get the following screen:

140441-f129ffcc44b538b52d94d7eafa6bf851.jpg

Again, no biggie; except that at the very bottom of the screen, I have a drawer with 3 icons.

There's the familiar Google Voice Search microphone (which, when pressed starts Google Voice search. Fine).

In the middle there is a button which takes me to my home screen, and overlays a minimised image of Maps in the corner of the screen somewhere.

Then there's a third button to the bottom right which opens some seemingly randomly chosen apps that you have quick access to:

140442-75b6ffa4f7a51579e3584e269d1e4d9d.jpg

This last would be useful except I don't know how to change the default apps included to my own app set.

Pressing the Settings button in the centre of the bottom row of apps brings up this screen:

140438-9f5abf7243df33a144c4cacfc20577b3.jpg

... Which is really no help at all - except to confirm that the phone *is* in Driving Mode, which I already know!

Does anyone know how to control any of this or what the whole setup is for if you can't actually *change* any of the apps to something more relevant to driving...?? It's driving me insane (no pun intended )

Ventilated case?

Ok, two days in a row, outside and hot out and my phone overheats. Today I took it out of the case. But, my luck I'll drop it. It would be nice if I had a case that didn't really protect every inch of the back. If it has bumpers around the edges so, as long as I dropped it on a flat surface, it wouldn't hit anything... But other than the edges, the back of the phone is completely exposed to dissipate heat.

purchase new Chromebook

My Acer Chromebook is about to expire.
Time has passed since I got it and it does what I need.
Prices have changed. Can I get a decent one for under $500?
I wouldn't mind 8 GBs RAM and 128Storage.
I also would like an SSD not an emme .
Samsung is my choice if you agree. The expiration is only 3 years and now it is upped to like 6 years for new ones.
I looked at 'about' which gave this expiration date.
I know it can be used after support date but I bank etc. so need security
Any suggestion?

Ad-hoc support on Android 4.4.2 - how?

Hello guys

I have a problem

I have Nokia 808 phone with old Symbian system. I have JoikuSpot app on it. It allows to create hotspot from mobile data on Symbian. And I am able to connect my Arch Linux and Windows 7 to hotspot created by this app.

But my Lenovo IdeaTab A3000-H tablet doesn't detect this hotspot. I have read, that it is because of unsupport of ad-hoc, and JoikuSpot creates ad-hoc network.

I have Custom Rom installed on this tablet - Android 4.4.2 by kupyxa4444_mod.

So question - how to enable ad-hoc support on this tablet and ROM?

Thank you for any replies

Greetings

Microphone problem

I have a peculiar problem just happened with the microphone on my Android phone (a Doogee N10) running Android v.8). It is not picking up my voice. If I use a sound recording app and I speak, nothing happens. But if I then blow into the mic then the sound registers and I can hear the blowing, but not the voice, on playback of the sound file. This makes me think it's not the mic that's broken but maybe a setting that, so far, I cannot find.

Also, the voice to text (microphone icon) on other apps like keyboard, browser etc is not working either.

So, before I take the drastic and unwanted step of doing a factory reset, does anyone have any answers to this strange problem ??? Obviously, I have tried all the simple checks like cleaning mic holes etc. but makes no difference.

Any advice will be much appreciated.

Help Contacts not syncing and cannot be edited

Starting about 2 weeks ago my contacts on my phone cannot be synced, added to, deleted, edited. If I try to add a new contact and hit save it just sits there greyed out (and not saving). Anything involving any syncing of contacts just sits there "working". Everything else syncing fine.

This is on all accounts on my phone. If I edit contacts through my google account on laptop everything works fine but never syncs to my phone.

Any ideas?

Location "on" ?

Hi. I have Android 9. I have denied access to location to all but one of my apps. But under Settings/Security & Location/Privacy/Location , I see the word "on". When I tap on it, I am taken to a screen that says "Use location" and this is turned on. Below this, it says "Recent location requests" and lists a couple apps. What is this screen for? What would happen if I turned off "Use location"?

Thanks.

setting up 2nd phone w/less storage

I just got a cheapo 2nd phone I plan to keep in the car and charged for emergencies.

I don't suppose I can import a backup from my phone which has so many apps on it, that the backup wouldn't fit on the new phone.

But I would love to somehow save time in setting up this new phone. Is there a way to:
Perhaps just import settings? And selected apps?

My phone is a Moto G7 (64GB storage), the cheapo 2nd phone is a Unimax UMX U693CL (16GB storage) that costs me nothing.

Wifi calling unavailable on Galaxy S+

I left US a little more than a month ago. I was using Verizon. I haven't yet canceled Verizon service. My Galaxy S9+ still has that Verizon Sim card.

I want to at least receive texts on my phone. I need to receive verification text when I forget my password.

I read that wifi calling makes it possible to get texts when I am abroad.

Their guidance was that (1) go to Phone all (2) Click Settings (3) Scroll down to find out "Wifi calling"

But on my phone I could not find "Wifi calling" section. Could it be hidden somewhere?

Log.i question

I'm very new to this. So please excuse my ignorance.

This issue came out of nowhere. I've done this code nearly 100 times. Then out of nowhere the i in the Log.i doesn't turn wavey (also what is the name of the wavy i). I've done everything the same and suddenly this issue came about. Any help would be much appreciated.
