Evo glass - weak or just bad luck?

I absolutly love Androidforums, but there are lots of people quick to jump on someone else. Sorry to hear about your phone. I have had my hero for quite some time and have babied it, waiting on my upgrade elig so I can sell it for a good price and get the next best thing. I have never been so anal about a phone and then the other day I dropped mine from my lap getting out of the car! I was so mad, got a scratch on the menu button. But a couple days before that realized the paint was starting to peel. And I do have a case and screen protector, just so happened that the smalll part exposed to the elements is what was effected!

Yeah, based on the OP's choice of title, many people will assume he is blaming it on HTC for using a "weak" glass.

Glass is glass, it will shatter if stressed in the right place. Some phones might be built differently to absorb some of that stress. The Evo has a plastic bezel..thus it will bend.

A case on the other hand probably would've saved your screen. Almost all the screens for the Evo have a extended bezel to prevent the glass from touching when laid flat. Also the case would have absorbed a lot of the impact.
 
Very unfortunate turn of events for you, phantomevo77.

I am sure everyone would be pissed at themselves for dropping their phone and spidering the screen. I know I would. I'd be kicking myself every time I looked at my poor EVO.

It happens, not much you can say to the contrary.

I will say though, I did watch a phone reviewer on YouTube drop an original iPhone from a 2nd or 3rd story building onto concrete. It didn't shatter or break into a hundred pieces. I have to admit, I was impressed (had a G1 at the time) it still functioned. lol

Also, HTC does do stress tests on their phones, as well as drop tests. So I am pretty confident in their results that; for the device, it's durable to a fault.

I use a belt/hip leather Reiko pouch to hold my phone while I am at work. The screen faces me while it's in there, but I always have in the back of my mind to be careful and not to press my hip against anything that's going to over-stress the face. I am going to look into the Seidio Rugged Case for the EVO and see how that helps.
 
I'm sorry to hear about what happened to your phone.

Having a layer of protection like a case could have prevented your screen from cracking. Judging from your photos, I would guess that your phone was hit in the lower left hand corner almost facing down. I think you were just unlucky because that meant that most of the force from the impact, was focused in one small area of your phone. Any type of glass from any phone would've cracked. You would've been luckier if your phone hit the ground flat on it's back, or even on it's side, because that meant the force of the impact would've been spread to a bigger impact and would've cause less stress on the glass to a point where it might have withstood the impact.

Again with a case, there will be a layer of protection that could have prevented this. I guess, if you had the Best Buy's - GSSBT Protection, you wouldn't have to cough out with the $100 deductible. :)
 
Did anyone even bother to mention to the OP that he would most likely be billed for the $100 deductible hence no immediate need to come up with the money right away or more importantly no need to wait until he has the money to get his damaged phone replaced? Can someone confirm that this is the indeed the normal procedure since it allways has been the case for me?

Depends on his credit class with Sprint. I charged my deductible to my account also when my son had to replace his tour.
 
Keep in mind that the larger the screen, the more fragile it will be. That's just one of the tradeoffs. I have an 8.9" Asus netbook. When the 10.1"s came out, a bunch of people were talking about breaking screens. It is amazing how just an extra inch larger makes it more fragile.
 
It's pure chance as to whether the phones break when dropped… iPhone, Evo, Whatever.

This was just unlucky. I'm not convinced those cases do anything except keep scratches away, and am not convinced it would have saved your phone. Who knows. I'm a naked phone user. (Dirty?)

My friends have shattered their iPhone 3G/3Gs by dropping them two feet in a case, while my iPhone was slammed in a car door once and thrown down a flight of stairs and is still intact, all without a case.

Luckily we have Sprint's insurance and $100 is a small price to pay for a brand new $500 replacement. AT&T iPhone customers aren't so lucky.
 
I just recently dropped my evo (with a seidio case) in the same manner but no broken glass. I would think it just depends on how it falls and what it lands on. Glass will break with enough concentrated pressure. I am normally good with not dropping phones though. The only 2 times I've ever dropped phones in the past year I was drunk both times. So it wasn't my fault. I always blame the alcohol, for just about anything :)
 
Um, just a few words here. Left bottom corner. That was a HARD impact. Total bullshit. Ya gotta learn not to slam your phone on the ground when it pisses you off.
 
I dropped mine off the top of my car.. it dropped right on the one corner, granted I had the body glove case on there, but still ... it was fine.. and hell I had written it off as broken...
 
my roommate is on his 5th iphone because he keeps dropping it. just be glad you got insurance instead of stating product is somehow defective.
 
That's bull man the glass is not incredibly weak, it'sa 4.3" inch screen, the larger the piece of glass the easier it is to crack, any phone with a big screen has this problem.

The solution? I got myself a case and a screen protector on day one, I've dropped my phone twice, once by accident another my son grabbed my hand and the phone slipped out. The phone took zero damage but had it cracked I still had insurance so I really wouldn't have cared.

HTC is usually pretty good about things like this. I hit my Touch pro 2 with a freakin bowling ball on accident and it didn't crack this bad. It just seems to be HTC used cheap materials on this phone. My moment, with no case, has been dropped several times on carpet, concrete, hardwood, and tile. Screen's still fine. With a screen this big, they should have used stronger glass. But I also agree, with a screen this big, the phone should be in a rubberized case to absorb shock.
 
There's something like 4 actual posts here and the rest is the EVO fanboys being jerkoffs.

I guess everyone is over the honeymoon period so only the 13 year olds are left. I like my EVO but this forum blows.
 
Someone was asking......

When you make a claim due to irreparable damage to your phone, the will send you a "phone return kit" and you are required to send the damaged phone to the pre-addressed location. If you fail to do so, your account will be charged for the full cost of the replacement phone...and it likely won't be new. Just a little heads up for anyone getting ideas.

With that said, cracked glass phones are still very valuable on eBay as I got $105 for my wife's Samsung Moment...surprised the hell outta me. Replacing glass on phones is quite easy(no I can't do it) and then they either flip them or reflash to Cricket and then sell them for relatively big bucks to Cricket people.

With that said, a buddy of mine cracked his iPhone and heard about this local guy that did repairs. The dude met him in a Mickey D's parking lot and fixed the phone right in front of him in about 3 minutes for $45 bucks.....jus sayin'!!!! This phone doesn't have the exposure to have that many craftsmen out there but who knows.....

Cracked glass looks really bad cosmetically but it's not hard to repair. You can buy a screen kit online and replace it but you better know what you're doing. The reason they're so popular on E-Bay is because they can spend about 100 bucks for the kit and re-sell it as a refurbished phone without ever telling you the phone had a screen replaced.

Mine fell at work from a grating platform about 6' from the ground. It fell right through the grating (with the bottom of the phone as the leading edge) about 4' to the second grating where it hit and then fell through that grating the additional 2' before landing on the corner next to the search button and eventually face down on the concrete slab.

My phone is in an Innocase II Surface with a Phantom Skinz screen cover. The Innocase took all of the damage, two deep indentations from hitting the grating and a scuff on the corner where it hit the concrete.

Had it not been in the case I don't think it would have survived, though I was still probably a little lucky.
