Root MILESTONE 2.1 update and root guide

oops sorry, didn't realise ><

Btw, is there a way to directly enter Open Recovery instead of booting into android recovery then applying update.zip to access open recovery?

and is there a way to also access the phones internal storage? i can't seem to acces it using Astro, i can only see my sdcard.
i also would like answers to my earlier post ><

sry, im new to Android and would like to learn how to fully utilise my phone, tks in advance =)

No. That sort of function would require an unlocked bootloader to edit the startup of recovery.

By applying the update.zip you're invoking Open Recovery by exploiting a vulnerability.

Ah thnks. So anyway I did a Nandroid back up just before rooting my phone, does that mean if i restore the backup my phone will be unrooted? or to unroot i have to flash a stock ROM?
and when is it advisable to do a nandroid backup? before root, after root or both?

please help me, my mile is 2.1 update 1

What file did you using in rdlite? I was getting that when I was using the Telus ones. As soon as I used the vun. rec. file it worked instantly!!!

EDIT: Keep in mind if you dont have 2.1 you need to update to that first....

@ Qazz~: Nandroid makes it just like it was when you did the backup. So if you did the backup before rooting, then when you restore from that backup, it will be unrooted. It's advisable to root the phone, then do a backup. That way to have a restore to go back to that doesn't require any more flashing.

@deepsdog: Flash the vulnerable recovery, then run the update.zip again. This should solve your problem.

ok tks, well i flashed the vulnerable recovery, went into open recovery and did a nandroid backup, so even if i restore that back up all i have to do is just root it again from open recovery right?

Got a few questions before I root/overclock. I'm using the telus milestone on rogers (a canadian gsm network). And I updated my phone to 2.1.

Q1: So I'm guessing I start w/ the vulnerable recovery. In that case do I retain my apps after I root?

Q2: can we take a nandroid backup before I root? All tutorials I've seen require the 'update.zip' step before we make a backup. So, itsn't that kinda rooting the phone?
Also why is it suggested to have a nandroid backup after root?

Any help will be much appreciated!!

Edit: Never mind Q2, I figured it out.

all apps will stay on your phone, if you only flash a vulnerable recovery image.

@m82a1 Thanks.

Ok I figured out the nandroid thing. But I've got 1 last question. Say i root my device now and want to unroot it later or upgrade to a 2.2 release. Then, do I just use RSD lite and flash the firmware I want? In that case, do I lose all my apps even if I use a service SBF?

Thanks in advance

@ Qazz~: The Nandroid backup made an exact copy of what was on your phone. So if you rooted before doing the backup, then the nandroid restore will be rooted. Anything you had installed on your phone at that time, will go back how it was as well. It's pretty much like turning back the clock: Anything you did since the nandroid backup was made, never happened.

@ongadget: You shouldn't lose any of your apps when flashing that sbf, however it is always advisable to make the backup before hand, just incase. It's likely going to roll out as a non-service so everything will be gone, just as a new flash when they do come out with 2.2: They are Canadian carriers after all. Why would they want anything to be easy for us?

Yeah baby!!! My phone has been rooted. I see the superuser whitelist app!!!!

Had a minor issue though. I had the 'manually power up your phone issue' but I couldn't access my phone (or its SD card) in My Computer to copy milestone_root.zip. Guessing it must have been a driver issue.
However, I was able to access the SD card once the phone rebooted after flashing the vulnerable recovery sbf (but I still didn't get Finished/PASS for the vulnerable recovery step by then). So I just copied it then and it all worked out.

I think it might be ok even if we copy milestone_root.zip file to the SD card, even before we start rooting the phone. Again, that's just what I think.

Thanks craigcrawford1988 for the tutorial. appreciate your time and effort.

OMG thx, it so worked for me(using SEA sbf)!!! btw how do i unroot it in case i experience problems?

Hey guys... Im going crazy :(

I keep getting the same error message that tazd was getting, even though I kept getting a pass on rds.

Now im trying to just load the vulnerable recovery only, which works fine, but it wont allow me to copy the update/milestone_root file, it stops halfway...

Im going out of mind, I followed every instruction to the letter, I can't even see the mistake im making =(

RSDLite sometimes doesn't show finished. You should try manually rebooting into the bootloader to see if that will make it display finished. As long as it says 100%, you could try unplugging your phone with RSDLite still open then rebooting into the bootloader and reattaching your Milestone to your computer. (This worked for me)

Not too sure what you mean. You have to place the update.zip file onto the root of your SD card.

You need to rename it to update.zip after its copied to the root of the phone of course!

ok so I did this update and had to do it twice cuz i went from 2.0.1 to 2.1 but wanted 2.1 service or whatever so i did it twice and for some reason when it boots up to the home screen, I dont get a slide to unlock all I get is just the home screen?

what can I do since i cant even get passed the first screen with no slide to unlock??

If i had no sim in then there is the emergency button that i can hit and dial numbers but thats it any one??

Are you sure you're using the right SBF for your phone. Or at least a one with similar frequencies?

I live in Indonesia and I just bought motorola milestone. I read all forum to root my own milestone and already download all necessary tools and update my milestone. For your information my milestone built :

Firmware version
2.1-update1
Firmware configuration version
GAS_EMEA_USASHLS00RT1NT_P016
Baseband version
3GSMEPU91A_U_91.07.561
Baseband configuration version
UCASHLSMR2EMEAB1B806D.0R
Kernelversion
2.6.29-omap1
milestcm@il93lnxebld05 #1
Build number
SHOLS_U2_02.36.0

But I still got this problem :

E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command

-- Install from sdcard...
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Verifying update package package...
E:failed to open /sdcard/update.zip (No such file or directory)
E:signature verified failed
Installation aborted.

any idea to root my milestone or gain superuser access ?
