Root mflops?

Ive seen people who are rooted talking about how fast their mflop is? Can someone please explain this to me lol. Sorry if its a noob question.
 
I believe its to compare how fast the phone is in raw computing power.

I think a stock Eris is around 3 MFLOPs. Mine is overclocked at about 708 mhz, and is at about 4.5 MFLOPs. Its noticeably faster in some parts of the phone.
 
You can download a program called linpack from the market, with that you can find out how many mflops your phone has.
 
Millions of floating point operations per second (mflops) is one of the measures of CPU functionality.

Higher is better, as some here are pointing out.

Rooters like to brag about getting 5 mflops after overclocking. Me included. :D

yea but MFLOPS doesnt necessarily directly correlate to speed.
On a rom i was testing, with JIT i was pulling over 5.3 MFLOPS, but it was SOOOO laggy that i could barely open the Linpack app. as soon as i turned off JIT, MFLOPS dropped to around ~4 but NO lag.


MFLOPS is a good basic benchmark, but its not something that you should rely on whole-heartedly

I confess to it being mostly 4.6 or 4.8; have not hit the 5 threshold yet, consistently.

Rooted but with no OC saw it around 2.8 running just about any ROM, which made me want to know the technical reasons that some ROMs seem more responsive, quicker to load menus and apps, than others. xtrROM 2.1.1 is the fastest I've tried, Evil Eris 3 the slowest, talking about user experience/user perception, not any measurement of speed.

Mentioned above, mflops are not the only consideration.

Ok, cuz right now I'm runing XTR Rom 3.0 and its super fast but Im at 2.20 without OC :)

That is an example of how data can sometimes be over blown.

Low mflops, but still a fast device as you report.

The 2.1 OS and CPU the Eris runs on have their limitations, no matter if rooted and overclocked or not.

I do perceive a difference, as I overclock, but how big a difference can it ever be in 2.1 with that CPU? 528 over 710 is just a squishy 20% or so difference in speed; that adds up to .8 seconds to load something hypothetical as opposed to 1 second.

Going higher has been shown to tax many CPUs to the point of possible damage over time or even right away; it's a bit chancy.. we need to be careful in there trying to squeeze out what little gains the hardware is capable of giving us.

I am running White Widow 4.5, overclocked to 710/528... just ran Linpack and it showed 2.67 (edit: 2.84 now...?) mflops or something.

Stock is supposed to be 3??

Honestly I haven't really noticed any difference with overclocking... I think it's a placebo effect for most :D

Or maybe it's just not significant enough to notice without comparing... Or maybe I'm just so used to it now that I would only notice if I reverted back to stock and stuff was slower... I dunno, haha... But most of the "speed" increases that I see were just things I set in ADWLauncher... such as how fast the screens change, how fast the drawer animation comes in, etc... those are the only visible signs to me. As far as opening and running apps, I don't feel much of a difference. They may load slightly faster, I dunno... maybe it's because I am using Apps2SD? :confused:

You didn't say what ROM you are running (unless I missed it?).

I'm running Ivan's Eris Official 1.0 (about as stock as you can get: no JIT, no a2sd, etc.) at 710MHz an my latest Linpack scores are 2.909 and 3.021 (you'll get slightly different values each time because of what else the phone has going on in the background).

Its not a tried and true measuring stick anyway, just one method of comparing devices and ROMs. Your mileage will vary. :D
 
KaosFroyo v20 is my current daily. I used to get instability with jit, but the 2.2 version (different?) doesn't cause any crashes or lag for my. I oc up to 768.

Well, I ran an admittedly unscientific test where I rebooted, ran Linpack four times without being overclocked (i.e., invoking setCPU) and then overclocked at 710MHz. Not much difference either way :D:

ShootMe from the market works as well. Scary alien. O/C at 710 is pretty low and almost stock speeds. Try 748 and see what mflops you get.

Not a real biggie for me...I'm happy right now with this safe speed. Hopefully, 1.1 will let me take it to "11" :eek:

If you install the updated zanfur kernel, you'll be able to go above 710. I did that for my dad's Eris and it's working fine. Uses the stock lockscreen, too.
