On my mac it took 10 minutes give or take ( I already had the sdk and stuff)
On windows since there are a few extra steps I would imagine a little longer than 10 minutes to get rooted then however long it takes you to set up your ROM.

Is setting up your new ROM essentially like getting a new phone and loading all the apps you used to have?

Your apps automatically will sync when you first start up the ROM, that is the reason that it seems laggy for the first 10 minutes or so. Also setting up your homescreen the way you want is included in setting it up.
 
yep, it is checked.

what is happening is it just isnt syncing automatically. ill open up my gmail account on my computer, see that i have 3-4 new emails, but nothing on my phone. if i open the gmail app on my phone... still nothing, if i hit menu > refresh, i see the sync "circle" icon in my notification bar letting me know its syncing, then, i get notification that i have new emails.

so the notification is working fine, the gmail app just simply isnt syncing automatically

Hmm I was having that same problem before I rooted, but when I flashed the ROM it worked fine... Did you Wipe, Flash, Wipe when you were flashing your ROM? For many roms this is recommended. After the second wipe do no flash again just reboot.

No problem man! and the second wipe should do the trick, it is suggested to fix any little bugs like this and it usually always works

You are most likely setting the CPU speed too fast. Most Eris devices can't handle much more than 800mhz. Go up in increments from 710mhz until you find out when your phone becomes unresponsive.

Your Max setting is the speed below that. Make sure you don't set a Max speed that's too highif you use the Set On Boot checkbox option.

I thought the max was 710 on set cpu? I am running KaosFroyo btw.
 
My wife's Eris on stock 2.1 with the overclock kernel was a Max setting well beyond 800mhz, but it maxes out above 787 I think it was.
 
Ok, thanks guys, I have one more question. When using handcent, I had it set where the led would blink when I got a text, as well as the trackball, now I cannot get either to do so, anybody else have this problem?

You are using KaosFroyo correct? that is known bug and I cannot get it to work either
