Galaxy S vs Droid Incredible

i just want a flash for flashlight man jeez... but yea if i could but sense on the Samsung i would sell my incredible tomorrow

The thing is, I wanted to read a review of the two phones the thread title mentioned. Instead, I got splattered with iPhone poo.

Its all through the thread, and has been in others as well. We know the OP is def. an iPhone fan, so I guess its to be expected :)

hahahaha. We got splattered with iphone poo

I don't want an iPhone like phone, otherwise I would have bought an iPhone. I will keep my iPhone unlike phone

You guys a re harsh. That is why I never made a post iPhone 4 vs Droid Inc for these reasons.

I get it you don't like the iP4.

I guess you don't like real 720p video playback on your phone that the Galaxy S does so well with aplomb and fluidity.
I guess you don't like a camera that takes great exposed picts, real 720p HD video like the Galaxy S.
I guess you don't like a media player that plays files with little or no problems like the Galaxy S.
I guess you like our 16-bit display that dithers real badly and is not smooth or accurate as the 24-bit Samsung display.
I guess you like screens that are overly saturated and fail color accuracy tests.
I guess you dont like fast 22 Mbps wifi speeds like the iPhone that the Galaxy seems to match.

These are iPhone like qualities. So I guess we shouldn't discuss them. The Galaxy S meets parity and exceeds many of them.

no one cares about the iphone 4 though. it's as simple as that.

anyways, unless there's a ps2 or xbox emulator for the galaxy, that 3d speed stuff is pointless, utterly pointless.

The thing is, your IP4 comparisons are not needed in your review. The review would've gotten across the information and comparison between the DInc and GalaxyS without ever mentioning the IP4. That's what they're saying. If we cared about the IP4, we'd probably be on Apple forums.

You come off as an extremely obnoxious know it all when in reality you don't know much and these minute differences mean absolutely nothing to the normal user. I wonder how your personality types ever make any real friends (think we know the answer to that one).

You do realize that phone is on AT&T? You do realize people are in something called CONTRACTS. So your obnoxious boasting is pointless. No one is going to buy another phone. WE JUST GOT ONE.

OK, now you are just getting silly and REALLY over defensive, but no, I don't care for the outdated OS (and i have an iPod Touch 3G).

I guess you don't like real 720p video playback on your phone that the Galaxy S does so well with aplomb and fluidity.

So... the Galaxy S has a 1280x720 res screen? Sweet! Because you know, otherwise playing "720P" content is just downsizing it to 480P.

I guess you don't like a camera that takes great exposed picts, real 720p HD video like the Galaxy S.
Given that we know the Inc is getting 720P recording (just as "real" as anything else), that is a non-issue. I have taken pictures just fine as well with my Inc, so......

I guess you don't like a media player that plays files with little or no problems like the Galaxy S.
DoubleTwist - nuff said.

I guess you like our 16-bit display that dithers real badly and is not smooth or accurate as the 24-bit Samsung display.
If the displays are truly different, i will grant you it. I have never really seen a gradient issue with my phone, so i cannot say.

I guess you like screens that are overly saturated and fail color accuracy tests.
Yes, i do like my screen. I like my vibrant and bright display, and i love showing off it's amazing clarity. If i need color accuracy, i have my Dell IPS screen at home. On the road, sometimes its fun to have something with a bit of pop.

I guess you dont like fast 22 Mbps wifi speeds like the iPhone that the Galaxy seems to match.

Given that there is NOTHING that our phones will do that would even come close to making use of a 22Mbit connection, let alone a standard speed of 5-6MBit, I don't give two butts either way. In fact, I am happy enough with my 3G speeds, i never even bother switching to Wifi at all.

These are iPhone like qualities. So I guess we shouldn't discuss them. The Galaxy S meets parity and exceeds many of them.

LIke i said.. you are getting WAY to defensive. In your GALAXY S vs Inc review, you mention the IP4 almost more than the S, which is what most of us don't care for.. If you want to compare the IP4, just come out and do so!

1. Please, if you dont have anything helpful to say (like this) please try and not say it. Comments like these only bring frustration and really take away from everyone's forum experience.

2. I have never actually played with a Galaxy S (as I am sure that A LOT of you havent either, but I could be wrong) so I cant say anything about it with any degree of accuracy. However, I do know that the Dinc is an incredible fancy phone, does everything I need it to (and more), the screen looks great, the 3G and Wifi speeds are blazing fast as it is, the processor is real zippy, games play and look great on it, and I can make calls on it.

The Galaxy S looks, on paper, like a great phone as well, one that CAN compare to the Dinc (and apparently the IP4 ;) ) and I know that when people pick this phone up, they are going to have a BIG smile on their face as I did and still do every time I look at my phone. I am just happy that the iPhone dominance days are over and that Android is the one to beat.

Honestly, no offense to mrspeedmaster

I don't begrudge these phone comparisons as much as I just don't see the reason to have them sometimes.

Moto X vs. Inc? Fair enough, its another Verizon Android device with various differences in specs from a different manufacturer than HTC.

Inc. vs. EVO? Sure, I get it...its the cousin to the Incredible and came out a little after the Incredible.

Speaking just for myself, it kind of wears on me when I login to the Incredible forum to discuss the phone I have and maybe try to help out once in a while but see comparisons to other phones.

Its further exacerbated by the fact that these types of threads seem to reside on the main page ad nauseum while questions and research done on the actual Incredible get relegated to sub forums where they quickly fade or get little to no attention.

Not sure about anyone else, but in my opinion, I think page one of this forum could use a little less comparison to other devices and little more Q&A on the actual phone in the title!!!

True, This should have been titled IP4 vs Galaxy S vs Inc. If it was just Galaxy S and Inc then theres no need to mention the IP4 in every single freaking comparison criteria!

That said, I'm still kind of questioning what kind of conclusion I should be drawing. Is the Galaxy S better than the Inc? Should I cancel my Inc order and wait for the Fascinate? Most of what I'm taking away from this comparison is trivial differences that don't change the useability or value of the phone. For example, as mentioned above the faster wifi is useless since we're limited in other ways, but what about the slightly bigger screen? Hows the battery life in real world useage?

I think that you will be more than happy with either of the two phones.

It's simply unbelievable to me the number of people that are offended/bothered/in any way affected by the fact that, in addition to the two phones in the thread topic, the poster decided to also throw in comparisons to another top smartphone.

Just amazing.

There are some things that the iPhone 4 does really well. God Forbid anyone acknowledge that or, even more appallingly, use it as a benchmark for other phones.

I wonder how your personality types ever make any real friends (think we know the answer to that one).

Nice; personal attacks over someone making comparisons of a couple phones.

You do realize that people trade phones and contracts all the time? That some people buy phones retail so that they aren't locked into contracts? That some people might be interested because - hang with me here for a minute while I blow your mind - the Galaxy S is actually coming to Verizon as the Fascinate?

I think I have enough play time to make a conclusion.

I've had my DINC since launch day. T

Here are the DINC advantages:
1) Optical trackpad
2) HTC Sense (if you like it)
3) Reliable GPS
4) Doesn't have the bad track record that Samsung has in terms of future & quicker upgrades

Besides the GPS issue on the Galaxy S phones (I've read enough posts/threads to know it is an issue), the Galaxy excels at everything else.

The Galaxy S does so many things so well, I am going to crown it the best multimedia PMP Android phone.
There are little things that make it stand out for me:

I like the 16gb internal storage. Along w/ 32GB. I have 48GB of storage.

God forbid, there are these white earbuds that I have that allow me to pause, skip tracks, answer phone calls and mute sound. I was surprise it worked on the S.
They work as well as the black in-ear noise cancelling buds that came with the Galaxy S. Doubletwist on the DINC with those white earbuds sometimes pause music but never answers a phone for me.
They also threw in a nice feature called 5.1 surround sound for the headphones. BTW, the media player has an option to broadcast to a bluetooth ADP2 car stereo with its new Bluetooth 3.0 chipset.

Someone mentioned that they don't care if the DINC CAN't play 720p files on the phone. That is great for him but I don't want to spend hours re-encoding a video I'll only watch once.
I also like the fact I can download 720p off youtube and play them right away even though my screen is 480p. I'll probably only watch it a few times then delete them. And while I'm on vacation taking videos with my dSLR, I can play those home videos I just shot right then and there.
I don't have to go to the hotel and handbrake those videos to play on the DINC.

Furthermore, I like the fact it streams 720p files from many websites that have mobile optimized HD playback for a hot-selling tablet. Some of these sites have shifted away from Flash and play video in HTML5 and the Galaxy plays them so well.
My company places all their instructional videos on a webserver and this is a good phone to recommend to fellow employees who want to watch those company broadcasts.
I don't even have to copy movies over to a microsdhc card. Everything plays in a cloud.

According to another poster, the DINC will have 720p video recording. Real 720p like the EVO 4G and like what I have now on my OTA leaked DINC.The 720p video that shoots at 10fps to 24 fps with real bad audio.
The Galaxy S shoots great video out of the box and there no "ifs, buts" excuses or false promises of rooted patches to make it work. It is also the only Android phone that shoots h.264. You should see the online petition EVO owners have; wishing they can record in h.264.

Some other notes on the Galaxy S:

1) 24 bit vis 16/18 bit display. It is evident when I put up test photos side-by-side.The screen just pops and is very accurate like the Droid X. No banding.
2) Amazing media players. I had more time to play with it
a) Video plays XVID/DIVX and some WMVs,AVIs. Most of my old divx movies played. There were a few exceptions but most played.
b) You can adjust color tempterature/tones during video playback.
c) You can play videos in a playlist. You can download a bunch of youtube music video and be video dj.

Rockplayer on the DINC is not even a contender.

3) Music player is best on Android. Period. Better than MixZing, better than Doubletwist, btunes.

All of the apps seem to mangle album art and corrupt playlist. This one doesn't have any of those problems. It is a fine piece of software that is to me, bug-free.
a)It has 5.1 surround sound.
b)It has an equalizer.
c)It has surround sound effects -stadium,hall,concert,etc.
d)has a visualizer.
e)Audio output is much clearer and accurate

Finally, Battery life:

The Galaxy's battery life is above average. I believe in the mfg's stated talk, usage time.
I played 2 movies 4 hours and was still at 50%. This is in line with the published specs 7.25 hour of continuous video.
Compared to the DINC. 45 minutes. I guess the video player on the DINC is not fully optimized or decompRessing everything in the CPU.

Now for more real world usage:

After a full charge on both. 8 AM.

30 mintues of GPS, 30 minutes of web surfing.
Background email, both have notifications and wifi on. I don't believe in turning things off. Phones shouldn't work that way.

I played streaming audio from the same source via wifi for 4 hours.
The DINC died in less than 6 hours of total use. DINC died on me at 2pm doing the same thing the Galaxy S was doing.

The Galaxy S is stil at 3/4 full and playing video in the background and photos. By 7pm, The Galaxy S still had a 60-70% charge

I believe I can get 2 full days out of the Galaxy for my use. I may need a top-it-off when I drive to work but that is about it.
I believe I can do this without task killers, shutting off wifi or background notifications.
This is something I've been so accustomed to and now expect from all new phones. The Incredible has horrible battery life.
Suggestions to kill tasks, disable this and that is futile and in my opinion. It shows the major deficiency of the device or badly written software.
I shouldn't have to disable facebook or twitter notifications.
Have in mind, my DINC has the OTA update that IMPROVED battery life. My phone is also rooted. There are no apps loaded or installed besides Astro, FCC speed test and some benchmark apps.

My daily usage requires continual email notifications and occasional SSH into some Unix servers. If this is the culprit for my battery life, then I don't know what to say.

So in this regards, the Galaxys S gets my attention.

Conclusion:

I like the optical trackpad on the DINC. GPS works and I assume there is a fix for the Galaxy.
The Galaxy S is the multimedia Android phone bar none. It does have issues; namely ATT an TouchWhiz.
Performance wise, I see no reason for anyone to upgrade. But if you are in the market for a new phone, I would seriously look at the Galaxy models.

I will try to upgrade to the Verizon version, the FASCINATE.

I will be posting some picture comparisons shots. The Camera on the Galaxy is good. The video recording is leaps and miles above the Incredible.

I have a Galaxy S with me today and I am comparing it to the Droid Incredible (with the OTA leak update). I have the AT&T Captivate version

You lucky bastard! That is the only phone I'd consider giving up my Incredible for. Too bad you're on AT&T. I was hoping you'd say more about the two phones in the title and nothing about the iPhone. It sucks. I've used the old one. The new one is just like the old one with features that have been available to smartphone users for years. It isn't a breakthrough or revolutionary and the fiasco with the antenna and attempt to blame it on everyone but themselves should have opened the eyes of Apple fanboys everywhere, but it probably didn't.

That aside, which you opened the door for, I enjoyed your thoughts until this point:

10) The built in storage is readable by any app. It mounds the SDCARD as a folder inside the internal storage. So it looks like this:
/sdcard
/sdcard/sd (your microsdhc)
Whereas the INC is
/emmc/ (only readable by HTC apps)
/sdcard/

This is the biggest flaw in the Incredible. Well, other than the horrible battery, but at least I can change that. Samsung has done this a couple times now and there has been NO issue. Why HTC didn't do this... I don't know. It is maddening to have so much stuff on internal storage that just can't be used because support couldn't be properly coded in. So stupid. I made a thread about this a while back and was told that HTC didn't have a reason to and that all of the app makers could do it. Sigh.

Things I don't like:
1) Non-market app blocked off by AT&T
2) Touch Whiz. It is way too much like an iPhone. The Home and UI is pretty lame BUT the Samsung apps are better than the HTC versions (music/media/camera/etc).
3) It is way too sensitive. When I'm in camera mode, I'm always accidentally clicking on the search button which exits the camera app.
4) The USB port is recessed so some of my cables don't fit. It has a cover which is nice but it is way too recess and not all micro-usb cables work.

Other notes:

I think the wifi on the DINC is faster. I can't tell right now because my home router is wonky. I have a N router at work so I will try it out. The INC can go up to 12Mbps (with OTA leak and 802.11n). The iPhone 4 goes up to 27Mbps on wifi. I am hoping the Samsung can be at least 12 like the INC.

3G speeds is a toss-up. AT&T is faster but VZW is more reliable.

When the Samsung version hits Verizon. I am definitely going to try and get it.

If the camera has the proper "driver" then I am all about it. The Incredible has so many minor issues that it gets frustrating even trying to talk up this super awesome phone. I love my phone, but HTC must have been busy working on something more important when they put this thing together. Sure, I was anxious to get it, but I would have waited while you supplied proper software so that my camera worked and allowed usage of the internal storage.

I am looking forward to the Galaxy S very much. I can't get it because I refuse to pay full price for it, but man it is an awesome phone. Better than the Incredible, in my opinion. However, quit with the iPhone. Seriously. It isn't the phone to beat. It's a beat phone. I've held, seen and touched one. Made a couple calls, even sent a cute little text. I even had go to deathgrip one. I had someone film it on the Incredible. I should see if I have it on my PC and toss it on YouTube.

The Galaxy S is awesome and I look forward to hearing a bit more about it from you.
