Root rooting tool, a 'one click' program!

are they not just for droid X then? they look kinda cool, how come our desire root section doesn't have rom's like the Droid X section does? :-( I might trade my desire in for a Droid X now........

Nahhhhh, not really!! lol

erm......??

yeah they probably are, you prob. know more about it than me.....i just like the look of it that's all...!!

Hi all,

So my Desire has a HBOOT version of 0.80 and a software number (I assume this is actually the ROM version) of 1.20.207.3

Will the rooting method in this thread work for me or should I follow this guide instead as it specifically mentions the 0.80 bootloader?

I'm an O2 UK customer with 15 months left on my contract so bricking my phone is not an option! I'm a software developer myself so I know what I'm doing, but I've never done anything with phones or similar devices and I like to err on the side of caution.

Thanks in advance!

sure should, I started on 0.80 with software 1.21.xxxxxx, and there has been confirmation of this working on both the 0.80 and the 0.75 bootloaders. There is another bootloader version (0.81?), but I am not sure if anyone has tried.

short answer? Follow the guide that speaks to you most, I can confirm that both methods worked for me (I un-rooted as I didnt much like vanilla android, and then rooted again when the 2.2 w sense roms appeared) and, in all honesty, I'd say there is very little difference in the degree of difficulty between the 2 methods.

Thank you kboya. That does make me feel a little more confident about the whole process.

The one thing that is nagging at me is radio updates. I've seen a few people having problems (and in the worst case, completely bricked) while updating their radio. So I guess my question is, do I need to update the radio? Is it only certain carriers that require a radio update or do specific ROMs require updates to the radio?

I noticed that the majority of people that have encountered problems with the radio have been on Orange, so that makes me feel a little better, but still better safe than sorry.

I am on orange & i find its less hassle if you pick a rom with the radio already integrated

ROOTED, AND UPDATED TO 2.2

WOO HOO.

Checked out quite a few guides, and this was by far the easiest to follow.

Thanks a million kboya.

Now I just need to figure out this A2SD puppy.

Thanks again.

Andy

I take it on Orange if you update the rom OTA it then simlocks? As with the previous goldcard method. Original ROM fine. The update locks it?

I would get the phone unlocked first, there are warnings though that once you update to the froyo ota that you may never be able to root again

Would you advise just going for a custom ROM then? Yeah I already read the warning about Froyo. Thought I would wait until the dust settles on that one. I saw the other thread where Lekky suggested to use a Froyo based ROM by the modders at they where apparently better.

From what the OP said he was worried about getting sim lock but it never happened on this method. I am guessing its just cetain ROMs and that OTA that does it not all ROMS?

The best advice i can offer to rooters is, wait until one of the devs has had a hold of the official rom for a couple of days, and there will be a nice clean bug free (hopefully) fast stable rom for us to flash. Don't let yourself get caught up in the froyo fever! :)

Yes m8 i would advise anyone who feels at ease with rooting to go that way & get a custom rom, DesireableHTC is gving similar advice too.
Another thing to consider will be the version 3.0 gingerbread rom, that should give most people enough reason to root & stay rooted.

Thanks guys, one of my main reasons for waiting is reliability of the methods and to get something that I think one be a genuine benefit. I am not one for rushing into things unless I think that there is little risk and all benefit.

Best option is to go for it when the devs over at xda have developed a custom rom on the official htc rom

Well after scouring forum after forum, I'm not comfortable with any of the rooting procedures that I've seen. There's too many variables and the risk of turning a very expensive device into a paperweight is far too high.

If I had a second device to play with, things might be different. So this is the end of my rooting adventure.

Hey DesirableHTC, you are on Orange what was the first ROM you tried again? You said it didn't SIM lock. I can always buy a code just rather I didn't have to :D I take it you installed the new radio first?

Many thanks.

yeah i flashed this radio very first time 32.42.00.32U_5.09.00.08 but i am about to try the new OTA froyo update but it has a new radio that could sim lock me, im hoping it doesn't, but yeah, you can buy an unlock code apparently....

Edit;

All installed and working sweet, can't wait til some dev cooks up a nice juicy rom full of extra goodness. But yeah, radio, working fine.

Surely m8 you haven't gone & unrooted your phone

Brilliant, I better get to this. I might talk to Orange about getting a dust free replacement then zap the new one if it is fine. I am so slow and everyone seems to be jumping the bandwagon :S

AFAIK mate, you get back to recovery by holding Vol down while powering on and you should see a choice for recovery, i used clockwork mod and that is how i get back to it, you dont need unrevoked any longer mate, to install a new rom you want to download ROM manager from the market, you can then flash a new rom while walking to the shop (its really that easy, i did it the other day!!) also down load titanium back up from market

1. d/l the rom you want
2. put it on SD
3. do a titanium back up (all apps and user data)
4. go into recovery (like i said above)
5. Do a nandroid back up (you will see the option within recovery)
6. flash Radio, then ROM (specific to developers install instructions)
7. reboot
8. restore with nandroid back up and titanium back up(if it has gone from your phone, dont worry, re down load it and do a full restore of apps and user data)
9.......... There is no 9 as far as i can remember.......

Im sure i have that correct, someone please correct me if i have made mistake???

I'm really struck with the whole nandroid and titanium thing.
I understand what it does and why you would need Titanium, but what exactly is nandroid restoring?
