If you do a "all apps and user data" back up everything should be ok.

Great guide but i am at my wits end. I have tried this procedure on three different computers and followed the instructions to the letter every time (even reading two and three times to make sure) but every time i run the unrevoked.exe the phone starts doing it's thing and then when the phone reboots i get an error message saying that the recovery failed.
I have also tried different usb cables but still nothing, always at that step.
I am not sure if it makes a difference but earlier today i upgraded to the official Froyo update OTA so i an already running 2.2. At first i thought there was not enough space as i only had 16mb internal storage free, so i freed up some space and had 46mb free but still no good. Does the battery need to be at a minimum level?
I am hoping someone can help me because this is really driving me nuts, thanks.

Thats your problem M8, from what we are aware of once you upgrade to the OTA froyo you can't root the phone.

Yes it is m8 you get the same rom as the OTA update but all rooted

My HTC Desire is T Mobile branded but I managed to unlock it and now I'm using a different carrier. Can I use this method without making a gold card? Will this sim lock my phone? I lost my unlock code.

Thanks for posting such a thorough guide, but i am still having trouble.
When unrevoked says in is done the phone does not display clockworkmod recovery (green text on black background). The screen just stays black, but it seems to be powered up as the computer beeps when i unplug it.

Edit: had u already updatedto 2.2?
I'm certain I didn't update it, that Is what I have been trying to achieve. I only received this handset on Thursday but its unlikely that vodafone would have sent me a branded handset with 2.2 on.

check what OS is running settings>about phone and its the top one, yours should say 2.1 update1?

Thanks for the reply. I thought that may be the case. Is it worth rolling back to Eclair or just waiting till someone comes up with a solution?
Update: Yes seems i cannot root until someone works out how to hack Froyo's boot loader. However, someone on XDA pointed me to a thread with instructions to force apps to SD card using ADB without needing to route. It is a life saver until i can root.

I've been reading around on rooting for a week, finally found your guide, took a punt and was root and re-ROMed (Neophyte) in about 20 minutes! Legend!
My one weird quirk is that very sporadically I'll go to use my phone and the SIM Unlock screen is up; I have to put in the code to unlock it and then the phone works as per normal.
You heard of this happening? Has probably happened three times since I unlocked it 18 hours ago.
What I love about this thread is, having read it from the start, seeing DesirableHTC go from completely unsure about what's going on to being one of the main contributers to the thread! Is what's so great about this community, everyone gets involved and helps!

I'll hang around and help out if I can.

Iv just installed this official froyo rom (rooted) with A2SD+ and new radio.
[ROM] Official 2.2, with: busybox, old A2SD+, OpenVPN (TUN), EXT4 support, 802.11N - xda-developers
so still no sim lock then? wonder if that only happens when using the gold card method?
i'm going to try the neophyte rom today, but i'm also just d/l the froyo rom, and i've got the open desire rom on the sd card already.
hopefully i'll have better luck with them today!

Still no sim lock, correct! i have all the roms downloaded to my PC so i can swap whenever i feel the need!! lolA note for Aussie Desire owners;
When I went out today I realised that, even though my phone was accessing 3G, receiving SMSs etc, it wasn't able to download data (Internet).
I did some searching and found I needed to change the APNs in Settings > Wireless & Networks > Mobile Networks > Access Point Names.
You should find what you need here: APNs | Android Australia
I used the Telstra ones found there and it is now working fine! Woot!

Try turning the phone off & then turn it on while pressing the volume down button, you should get a white screen with some writing on.
When it settles select recovery & it should change to a black screen with green writing.
I have tried that but when i click recovery, the white screen with green HTC text comes up for a moment before the screen goes plain black. When it does this the only way to recover the phone is to pull the battery or press a load of buttons!

Just rooted successfully with this guide on my Win 7 x64 Enterprise laptop.

Try running the one click tool again m8, see if that fixes the problem.
Looks like something hasn't flashed across properly.
I have tried it a couple of times but when unrevoked says it is done the phone does not display the clockworkmod recovery (green text on black background) it just goes plain black, and can only be recovered by pulling the battery or pressing what seems to be loads of random buttons.

Only other thing i can suggest then m8 is follow lekkys guide & do it all manually, rather than using the one click tool
