Root DROID can't do wifi hotspot...Verizon

Just saw this and thought it was pretty funny.

A Verizon rep. told them that the DROID doesn't have the hardware capable of producing a wifi hotspot. I beg to differ...

Of course. Use the popular "Wireless tether for root users", located here. It uses adHoc, so there are certain things that might not be able to see it (my PS3 for instance has no idea that it exists), but it makes your Droid a hotspot.

with all the misinformation coming from "verizon reps" lately, i think you would be better off to ask the sonic car hop for info!;)

I'm not surprised. How often do companies say our devices are not capable of doing something that we have been doing for months after hacking it? Especially when they have newer *better* products out for us to buy so we can "finally" do these things o.O

I feel bad for this rep. She will have to face the office embarrassment of now having everyone know she doesn't have any idea what she's talking about, or worse, was telling a technology website something they were clearly going to know was false. :)

Here's the exact quote:
"The Droid by Motorola doesn't have a Wi-Fi transmitter so there is no hardware to support a mobile hotspot"

The Droid doesn't have a Wi-Fi transmitter. True.

Mobile hotspot (the service offered by Verizon for some phones) requires the phone to have a Wi-Fi transmitter (as far as I know). True.

The implication though, is that the Droid must have a Wi-Fi transmitter to produce a Wi-Fi hotspot. This is false. The Droid can use ad-hoc to create a hotspot.

She did not exactly go out and say that it is impossible to create a wifi hotspot on a Droid though. Mobile hotspot is a name that Verizon calls the service for some phones being able to create a WiFi hotspot off of their 3G network. It uses a phones Wi-Fi transmitter, adhoc doesn't cut it. Ideally, a company would want a standard Wi-Fi hotspot feature across all phones (rather than some using Wi-Fi transmitters and some using adhoc, adhoc connections will not show up for PS3s, as a previous person mentioned, and I assume other devices will not see this type of connection). Regardless, there's no reason why Vz should deny us wired tether on our Droids that are obviously capable of it. o.O Well actually there is a reason, they want us to buy the newer phones that have mobile hotspot support!

Ha! I can't wait until I can "finally" use that service for a gentleman's 20 bucks a month.

They must be joking with that tethering pricing garbage. I can't believe that they can get away with that.

Honestly guys shouldn't we just be happy we got the rare batch of Droid's with hardware that can do this :P

I think what they were talking about is the mobilehotspot that is built into froyo. Koush and others were unable to get it to work so it could be a hardware limitation in that regard. So I guess instead of doing it adhoc they gave up

thats what I keep saying :)

I dont even lust over other phones yet cuz ... This honey moon aint over yet !!! :p

i have never got it to work it shows up on my laptop and ipod touch as android tether but never can get online any help

i think the point is that it doesnt do "WIFI" tethering, what we use as root users is simply an adhoc sharing connection no wifi thats why other droids cant recognize it.

:DHaha, that's how I am. Everytime I wake up to my Droid, I be like "Sabes que, IT'S ON!!!:D

Anyway, I'm glad to have one of those Droids that let you do wifi teth (I use barnacle).
I've read around the web that some people can't get wifi-tether to work on their Droid. Happy mine does!:)

you do have to "allow" it to connect from the phone (keeps peeps off) ... if your laptop see's it ... it will connect

wow...amazing! I'm soooo glad I'm one of the lucky ones who got a droid that CAN tether....LOL
